Politik

You will rarely see me say anything political. And this is not necessarily political, except it involves a political figure.

But this is great.

It's a great example of the use of music (and personalities) to sway and motivate people.
It will probably get Obama some votes.

Cathy Storms said...

I love this and hope it encourages younger people to vote. Plus Graham Colton is in it...Thats a plus!!

HstryQT said...

Stuff like that is what's bringing the "Obama-cans" out of the woodwork. :)

Very cool.

gdahimself said...

People seemed be swayed by the opinions of celebrities whose expertise in politics is frequently no better than their own.
While it is laudable that people endorse and support the candidate of their choice, I hope the average voter does some research on the candidates running before they make their choice than purely being swayed by any promotional devise, this included.

Also register to vote then do so.
You can't justifiably complain about whoever gets elected if you didn't vote.

gdahimself said...

It is quite imaginative and beautifully crafted which can be very seductive.

It was a pretty good idea, but thats all I'm going to say about that.

It's stirring and powerful regardless of your political leanings. This is effective writing and music at it's best.

I think will.i.am is a creative musician. Thanks for sharing.

Chris,

Loved you on American Idol....and I just found out you are going to be at the Girls of Grace conference next weekend! My hubby, Chris Wheeler, is one of the speakers at the conference.....we can't wait to meet you. I posted about you and GOG on our blog!!

Blessings,

Very good marketing and quite unique.

Unfortunately, GDA, I think more people are swayed by celebrities and sound bites than from their research into the issues and where the candidates stand on them. Everyone, whether you tend to lean Democratic or Republican, needs to educate themselves on the issues in this complicated world we live in. (and I'm saying that for myself as well!) It's also scary how much power an email has. That one went around about Obama awhile back, and people were believing every word like it must be true if it came from the internet. LOL

It will be nothing if not interesting this summer and fall as the party candidates are chosen and it gets down to the wire between McCain and Obama or Hillary!

And prayers for your sis, Tawny, for an easy delivery and a healthy baby.

Wow, I hadn't seen that before and it is a very powerful message. I am sure Chris doesn't want a huge ugly political debate on his column but I just wanted to say that I do believe that the only way to truly change things in Washington is to vote for people who have not been bought and paid for by political action committees and corporations. Not all politicians are evil scum some of them actually want to help their fellow man. I don't understand how some people get so hateful and derogatory when talking about 'them' and 'they', 'those other guys who don't believe the way I do'. The vitrol and anger directed at out fellow Americans saddens me. We have to stop fighting amongst ourselves and agree to respect other peoples opinions even when they don't match our own. Only then can we really come together and accomplish great things. Think of all the good that could have been done with the millions of dollars used on all these political attack ads.

Later y'all,
Keri

PS and yes I am supporting Obama this year.

Hey people -
Carrie tipped me off before to the fact that Chris has posted some tv, radio and "other" appearances(like the Girls of Grace conference) in the Feb.20th - Mar 3rd time period on his Myspace Music site:

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=91694919

The appearances are in Texas, South Carolina and
California (LA). Notice is also on the fansite.

Chris and Phil are on the VFTW home page with a sign. There is a interesting interview with Josiah though.

risalea said...

Chris, you are going to be busy the next couple of weeks! Would you call this the kick-off of your radio tour?

Good luck, have fun, and safe travels!

Brandon Green posts in his fan thread on IDF and answers questions and stuff. I jus told him it was awesome that he took time to talk to his fans and that most idols don't but that Chris Sligh does.. which lead me into telling him that you had posted a blog about him and etc. I said it'd be awesome if you guys worked together in the future. Here was his reply...

hey, yea. me and him auditioned right next to each other in Memphis last year. and we've stayed
connected and talk sometimes. when i go to nashville we get up together and have coffee and what not. yea, he's a cool guy. that would be cool if i could work with him on some stuff in the future.

it seems like me and him have about the same people as fans!! thats cool!!

corks said...

Very disappointing, Chris, very disappointing to see you post this. No matter how beautiful the song or the sentiment, I can't overlook the fact that it is empty political rhetoric coming from a man whose stated goal is to have Americans surrender much of their lives to the control of the federal government.

Carrie said...

Well I personally am not a big Obama supporter, but that's a little harsh to attack Chris for posting something solely for the music value, not political. It wasn't like he was shoving the candidate down your throat. :\ To each his own, I guess.

ChrisSligh said...

Cork,

You are obviously entitled to your opinion. The point of this post was the song and the incredible words orated by Obama. There was no political intent. This was not an endorsement of a political candidate. Though, I think the words you've used to describe Obama are political rhetoric and unfair.

Chris

DJ in AL said...

I think Corks missed the whole point of the post. Chris is all about music, most of this blog is about music on some level as was this post.

I took this post to be about the music in this ad and how powerful it was despite the message or which political party you favor.

gdahimself said...

To Corks,
From GDA,

The point, as I understood it, is appreciation of the creation and execution of this, essentially a music video, not the undeniable agenda it is promoting.

If you go the website the words are available to read, which basically comes down to will.i.am talking about how he was inspired by this particular speech and it's message. He doesn't endorse Obama in the text and he doesn't see the issues between the partys as clear cut but believes we need to make some positive change from how things have been and can do so as a united group.

My opinion, "It is quite imaginative and beautifully crafted which can be very seductive."

Your responsibility is not let this or any political promotional devise of any kind be the sole source of information on how you decide to vote, try to keep up on the news but also do some research.
We still have eight months to catch up on the candidates' positions, their professional resume and their track record on voting.

The appreciation of art doesn't mean you agree with or endorse what it's saying but the artist's vision and how as a craftsman executes it.

For the benefit of th curious, Obama wouldn't be my first choice if I had to vote today.

ChrisSligh said...

Nicely put, GDA...you said what I was trying to in a much more eloquent fashion.

Chris

Cathy Storms said...

GDA~well said.

Anonymous said...

Beautifully said, GDA.

I was surprised to see that not only was this nominated for a Grammy, but that it actually won one. Will.i.am is really respected as a producer and music person, and I guess this effort shows it.

Celebrity can indeed sway votes, which is of course why the candidates always like to have star-support. I wish i could say people make more informed choices before they vote, but often it's enough to know that so and so was on their campaign trail.

risalea said...

GDA, I'd been wondering where you'd been...been missing your always enlightening responses!

I hope you guys had a good day. For me, it's been Monday all day long, and you know what that means! Tuesday is gonna' be better!

Hey everyone, sorry I didn't post this earlier -- I was in bed with some kind of sinus infection, but I have a half hour until class so I have a little time now:

Tawny wanted me to let everyone know that her sister's baby, Amelia was born this morning at 9:41 AM. She's 7lbs 10 1/2-11 ounces and 19 inches. :D

SO YAY, CONGRATS TAWNY AND HER SISTER!!

Chris was just on my news! :D They showed a clip of him from AI and then said Chris Sligh has a record deal. His album will be out May 6th and we'll be playing his single "Empty Me" next week :)

As Carrie told you all, Amelia is here! I spent 3 hours with her and she's the sweetest baby! She doesn't like when the nurses poke at her but she's so calm otherwise. My brother in law got the honors of changing her 1st poopy diaper lol it was pretty funny because he had never changed one before. I have a few camera phone pictures but they don't do her cuteness justice.

I already told you this Tawny, but she is SO CUTE. I love babies and their little chubby cheeks. Of course once she starts crying in the middle of the night... ;) Here's to hoping she stays pretty quiet and well-behaved! I can't get over how adorable she is!

risalea said...

Tawny, glad mom and baby are doing fine. Hey, I don't like it when nurses poke at me, either! LOL

Any favorite guys tonight, blogger friends? David Archuleta is very polished on stage, but I don't see him selling records. I liked Michael Johns, Jason Castro, Robbie Carrico. But, not enough to care to vote this week. That's terrible, I know. Just didn't make that connection. Maybe with time. (and we just got unlimited texting thanks to the lovely teenager in the house. Wish I'd had that last year, Chris!!) Risa

rosalee said...

Well, first of all - a Turtles song...(LOL) (Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan did it better, of course). Last year they did "Happy Together" on a Ford Commercial. They should make a rule that you can't use a song already used on the season immediately preceding the current one. In general, there could have been so many better choices of 60's songs tonight.

I just knew that they'd put David Hernandez first. He reminds me a little of Rudy Cardenas, who also went first. That position is the kiss of death. Fortunately for him, there were several singers that were weaker. He should be safe for now. But then again, last year I thought that Rudy was going to be safe...

I liked David A. the best, sorry to say.... I was hoping I'd like one of the less experienced ones better. I hope that Danny and Colton go home. I could compare them as a group to last year's bunch, but someone might get mad, so I won't say anything....(HeeHee)

(Me above, I made a mistake) Do my links show all the way? They don't for me.

Here's a little bit of a better pic :) She LOVES sleeping with her arms around her face. I didn't think initially that I'd post links in here but I figured it was pretty safe. (My sister worries about her pictures online)

David Archuleta was by far my favorite of the night but I know that's no surprise from me. He's great.

Rosalee - the stuff up on the fansite is super helpful for keeping track of Chris the next few days.

But Im frustrated because this Good Day Dallas site (or more specifically, the link to the streaming video) won't load the video for me. Darn it.

rosalee said...

Lori -
I'm getting the live streaming, but it's just the news, traffic, and weather. No sign of Chris. Maybe his segment is just being taped - no live feed... Hopefully, a video of it will show up on the site later....

I think I might have missed Chris this morning on the Dallas thing already. Boooo. It seems to stream just fine for me, too.

To anyone who missed it, he played "Know." They showed a tiny clip of him singing "Empty Me" but I guess they aren't going to show the whole thing on the feed. Sucks. But maybe it'll be up on the site. And Chris didn't say much haha. Tired maybe?

DJ in AL said...

I guess everyone has seen the new fansite with Chris' pic and etc. If I'm late to this party, sorry, you know how my timing is.

I noticed we could preorder his CD. I also noticed they asked for a promo code. Wonder what that might be and who might be privy to it?

Anyway, I am preordering without the code, it's only $10 right?

On another note, thought I was going to be able to get into AI this year afterall, but after last night, not so sure. Honestly, I didn't fall in love with anyone. I can't explain it. Maybe that will change, or maybe Chris has changed AI for me altogether.

Anyway, Tawny congrats to your sis everyone else have a Happy Wednesday.

Chris wherever you are, sending you love!

I couldn't get into AI either. Not sure why. No one really grabbed me. It's just not the same this year. They keep saying its the best group of talent but I can't agree....After last year its going to be hard to match...

Remember they have a show to promote, they probably start every year saying that whether it's true or not.
Given the prehistory of some of this year's contestants, they are count on this bunch to be more viewer friendly.

DJ, you definitely saw the site before I did! I can't wait until there's more to it.

Tawny,
Congrats on becoming an aunt. Very cool!!

I pre-orderedx my CD's from the site. BTW- I really like the way it looks. DJ, don't worry about the promo code thing. I just by-passed it. I ordered enough to give my students one, plus pass out a few more. Can't wait until they get here.

Saw the show this morning in Dallas. You sounded good Chris. Who was the guy on the drum??

Girl, you not only were on time, you were at the head of the line!

Thanks for making this available, Chris. I told you I wanted to order a quantity for the youth group at church, and to get them autographed is even a bigger treat.
Of course, the youth group size is about double what I estimated! LOL Oh, well, I'll just chalk it up to doing my part to spread the love.

And of course, I was out on the road today and didn't get to watch the streaming video live, but have seen the clip. This is going to be a fun ride the next few months! Take care, Risa

"This would be beautiful if it wasn't by a political leader that supported killing unborn babies and that's not political either, just the truth."

1) It is beautiful creation.
see my post above to corks.

2) It isn't made by the Obama campaign but someone inspired by one of this speeches.

3) While I agree that abortion is a singularly repugnant when used as a form of birth control, unhappily, the issue of abortion for significant number of people is a political issue that can make or break a run for political office.
