What I Did On Summer Vacation

Well, I'm sitting in the Cancun airport typing on my MacBook Pro (best purchase I ever made outside of Sarah's engagement ring), getting ready to fly back to Charlotte. My wife is sitting beside me looking as beautiful as ever, with a dark tan she's quite proud of. We got to spend a lot of time in the sun relaxing, so it's been great.

We got here Friday a week ago. We landed in Cancun airport, got our luggage and then our rental car and we were off. One problem. Sarah, who was taking care of all of the traveling details, had forgotten to ask for directions to the house. She had gotten some basic clues from emails wih the owners of the house we stayed in (like what resorts the house was in between) but we had no idea how to get to the house. We had emailed the owners, but (we found out later) they were at a golf tournament for the day and missed our calls and emails. Just as it was starting to get dark, we decided to try down this little street beside one of the resorts and we lucked out! It was the right one. We went to the property manager's house, got the keys, and literally as darkness settled we got into the house. It would have sucked to try and find the place in the dark, so we were quite happy.

Most days, we just lounged around the house. The house is about 4000 square feet and is about 50 yards from the beach, and it was sunny every day except 1, so we would hang out at the house and just tan and relax. Every day, we would head into Playa del Carmen, the closest town (Cancun was about 30 minutes north of where we stayed) and got dinner at a nice restaurant, but for the most part we just stayed at home. Playa has a Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and several large Americanized stores, so a couple of meals we bought food, brought it home and I cooked. It was nice.

My favorite day was on Tuesday. We went to a water park of sorts called Xel-ha. Basically, it's a natural water park, right on the ocean. There's an inlet with coral reefs throughout, a river that empties out in the ocean, a place to swim with the dolpins, assorted restaurants and tons of stuff to do. The day pass that we got was all inclusive, so we got all our meals, free drinks, snorkel equipment, towels and lockers. We pretty much snorkeled the entire day except for lunch. It was great.

There were certain places where the fish were fed, so it was fun to swim there as hundreds of fish surrounded you waiting for food. We swam all the way out to where the inlet turns into the ocean and there were some huge Grouper fish that were bigger than Sarah...they were being fed, so they were swimming past us, brushing against us, getting food...it was awesome.

After lunch, we went up to the top of the river and snokeled down the river, stopping a couple of times to jump off 20-30 foot cliffs (that was fun). Then I talked Sarah into giving up her life vest so that we could dive down into the water. That was when the real fun began. The last 3 hours, we just spent out in the water, around the reefs and rocks in the inlet, diving down to find all kinds of fish and coral and cool stuff on the bottom (the deepest the inlet gets is about 25 feet, as far as I could tell).

So, that was a great day.

Overall it was a very refreshing vacation. There were things (like my iPod) that had been bothering me for a while that I got to take care of, finally. There was music that I had been wanting to listen to in depth for a while that I finally got to buy and listen to. From a creative standpoint, I was nearing empty...I was just tired and needed a break. Now, with batteries recharged, I'm all pumped up to write more new stuff that will hopefully make the record.

I'm excited.

I have said this before several times, but thanks once again for all your support. This blog has changed a couple of times, but I think it's changed for the better. I have decided to refrain from using names of fellow contestants, unless I receive specific permission from them. I may use general terms when talking about friends, but I think it will be best to refrain from names on the blog. Also, I will focus mainly on music stuff and personal stuff here. I may write about the tour, but I will try to focus on stuff that happened personally. There are a lot of people out there that feel the need to tear apart every word I write hear and attempt to use it against me. I could care less about them, but I would hate for their stupidity to ever get back to my friends and for my friends to question even for a second that what those people are accusing me of is true. So, from here on out, I will do things in a way to avoid questions. And eventually the tour will be over and life will go on and the people on here will be the fans, not the "haters".

I love you all and say it again: thank so much for your support and love.

hey Chris,

Thanks a lot for posting about your experiences in Cancun, or near cancun that is.. It's amazing to know that you actually care about life and the people in it...whether they're your friends or just fans..like myself. It really gives me a breath of fresh air that there are stars out there that actually do care about the fans....You seem really down to earth and humble with a great sense of humor. I don't live far from your Church here in good o'l Greenville, South carolina and i look forward to going to the concert in July as it comes to Greenville! I can't wait to here the crowd go crazy when you sing! Its going to be awesome!! your Fanbase is nothing short of "out of this world" and of course there are going to be people who " are jealous of your kind heart and people who are what some people call "haters" but who cares...who are they really setting good examples for!?? exactly..but you on the other hand, set the good examples of never giving up and i say that b/c you tried out for American Idol 2 times and as you said, never made it far...it really shows that you have dedication and a heart of Gold..and i like that you are Family oriented and your wife and yourself have a lot to offer your friends and co-workers. Thanks for all you do Chris

Glad to hear you both had a great time---sounds like it was just you needed. You have to know your true fans are just happy for you and looking forward to whatever you do in the future. Be well and just enjoy what the summer brings.

So glad you had fun and got renewed. And happy you will be able to just blow off the haters and realize that the negative on the web "don't mean a thang"!
Was just thinking that the "Idols" won't be the only ones hitting the tour circuit this summer. For instance the night before you all play the Missouri state fair
Switchfoot will be there. It would be a safe bet that you are going to have interesting hotel and airport run ins this summer. This is all going to make a fun book some day.

It sounds like you had a wonderful vacation. My thoughts and prayers were with you.

And yikes, now that you are back blogging, once again, you have given me much to learn and listen to! I think of it as my Chris Sligh homework. I really appreciate the kick in the butt you give me to broaden my horizons. It takes me a while to catch up, but that's ok.
Hopefully, I can give back some.

P.S. Welcome back!

So,uh, Mr. Foxx -

Well, you did once say you would jump off a cliff if you didn't win AI. I guess you made good on that one (lol).

I wish I could have gone snorkeling when I was in Hawaii. Too bad I couldn't wear my glasses under the mask, and I'm blind as a bat without them. I guess you had better luck.

It sounds like you had a very nice time.I hope you brought home some souvenirs (shells, coral, etc.). Maybe the experience will give you new material to write songs about in the future (however, not much rhymes with "snorkel" except maybe "chortle"? lol).

Anyway, keep on bloggin'!

What an awesome vacation. I've spent some time down in Baja & it is really cool. It is a great place to recharge your batteries.
You are such a loving husband. Sarah is very lucky. I bet she does look cute with a dark tan & bet she can't wait to show it off.
Hope you have a safe trip & look forward to more blogs.

Chris, why avoid names in your blog? i think you are thinking too much and caring too much. people would think what they want to think. why not just be the person who you are, and talk about your friends in a natural way? if the blog is about sharing your personal experience, then friends and other things are part of the life that you are experiencing. anyway i am keen to know a lot about your rehearsal and tour life.

Glad you and Sarah had a great time on vacation. The two of you deserved some get away time. (and what better get away time than to go snorkeling and enjoy the beach) That is one of the reasons I love living in Florida!

I am also glad that you are back blogging. Your fans always love hearing what you are up to. Look forward to seeing you on tour!

Chris, thanks for the report and for turning the comments back on. I feel like I've been missing talking with a friend. Sounds like it was an absolutely fabulous trip and a wonderful place to stay. What a great way to start your summer!

Tell Sarah she's brave swimming with fish bigger than her. I'm sure they were harmless, but I think that would have given me the willies. LOL

Vacations are awesome, but I know you'll both be glad to be back home. If you're like me, you sleep best in your own bed.

Take care! Risa R.

Hey Chris!

It sounds like you had a great time on your vacation! Good for you. :0)

I've never really commented on here before. But I absolutely love reading this blog, especially when you were giving us die hard idol fans a little glimpse at some behind the scenes idol info (especially about Blake & Chris <3).

I'm so frustrated with people who feel the need to misinterpret everything you say and irritate you to the point where you feel you can't blog the way you want to.

I hope that in someway or another you can find a way to allow us a glimpse into what it's like for you and all the rest of the guys on the tour bus this summer, since it's the little moments and story's about our favorite idols that make us fans feel that much closer to you guys!

Anyway, I can't wait to read this blog while your on tour!
Hopefully I'll get the chance to meet you on September 4th (So far away) at my concert!

Dear Chris and Sarah,
My husband of eighteen years and I went to Cancun for our honeymoon. We also went to Playa del Carmen and Xel-ha. I remember the really big iguanas and getting bitten on the behind by a little coral fish while I put on my flippers. I sort of made a spectacle of myself when I jack-knifed to my feet and looked at my new husband with suspicion, as I was pretty sure that fish did not have teeth. After getting nipped twice more, I realized that coral-dwelling fish do indeed have something akin to teeth, and the marriage was saved.

We had a wonderful time, and I am glad that you got to spend time at such a lovely place. I think that we will go back for our twentieth anniversary.

Hi Chris,

I have always been a fan of your blogs. You've always said very intelligent things and I love your take on American Idol from the inside. I just hope that you will continue to post whatever you feel like despite any criticism you might face. You know that this just comes with the territory of being newly "well known" and it has nothing to do with you personally. It does have everything to do with perception and people assuming things that were never said. Don't let those types of people dictate what is in your blog. You made a name for yourself on American Idol not only because of your voice, but because you were the kind of guy who was not afraid to be funny and witty. You said whatever you wanted to say, consequences be damned. That is a fine gift, my friend in a world of passive-aggressive haters. Just know that you cannot please everyone. All you can do is try to be pleasing to God and of course, to yourself. So continue blogging. Continue being snarky and have a blast. So glad to hear that you had a nice vacation. Enjoy the tour.

Chris--another terrific blog entry. I'm so impressed you were jumping off cliffs to snorkel and explore. Snorkeling around a beautiful reef is on my list of things to try for an upcoming vacation. It sounds like you are steering your blog in another sensible direction. Hope this works well for you.

I'm glad you got to relax on your vacation and also have some fun. The water park on the ocean sounds pretty sweet. Swimming with dolphins and snorkeling sounds awesome! Fish bigger than Sarah sounds pretty creepy considering they were swimming around you guys but i'm sure it was also pretty cool. Overall i'm just glad you're batteries are recharged and ready to go :)

Good luck on the writing, I hope most of it makes your album. Less than a month until I see you on opening night!

To Chris,

Quite clearly you had a wonderful time and presumably Sarah did too.
Your account of your swimming/diving/snorkeling adventure positively radiates unqualified joy.

I made a faulty assumption that you would return with some new songs written. Between the American Idol contest and the following tour, I assumed nothing was written or likely will be written given the demands of the road. Success in you upcoming efforts.

Do you ever have concern that this blog is losing innocence, openness and spontaneity ?
Apparently things are occurring external to the blog which is making you increasingly wary about what you report concerning events in your public life. How unfortunate and tedious.

Um... NO!

I am a newcomer to your blog and just wanted to stop by and say that I absolutely loved you on a American Idol and I cried when you were eliminated. It wasn't fair. To me, you were the only "real" contestant there. You acted like a real person, and I could really relate to you, and I thank you for finally bringing that to the table that is American Idol. And, your voice is absolutely amazing, I tuned in every week specifically for your performance. I definitely believe that you deserved to get further, but, I know you have success in your future. It sounds like you had a great time in Cancun. I've always wanted to go! Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Take care!

Chris,

Welcome Back! Missed me some Chris blogs while you were gone.

I completely understand your need to make changes in the way you blog, I hate it, but I understand it. I've read some of the pure crap that some of your critics have written on some of what I consider to be some of the most vile forums on the net and I have to wonder who has the kind of time and energy they seem to have in trashing and wallowing in hatred and pure contempt for someone they have never met or spoken to? What small, pathetic, empty lives must they lead? I refuse to visit these forums again, but wanted to get an understanding of what was going on behind the scenes.

I hope that you will reach a place where you can resist the urge to read worthless and meaningless white noise and focus on the love and support you receive from fans who get real enjoyment from your music and your blogs.

ChrisSligh said...

DJ,

I actually have finally learned to avoid the white noise, as you call it. There's one AI dedicated forum that I read and that's it (DJ, is your first name Dave?)....the others I avoid at all costs. It's not worth the time and energy. The only place it's hard to avoid is here...I get perhaps 5-10 comments a day that are literally some of the meanest, vilest stuff I can imagine - it's pretty obvious it's the same 2-3 people, but still it's annoying to read, you know. But I just hit delete and move on as quickly as possible.

I do have great thanks for the friends I've made here - internet friends, obviously, but as Sandy can attest, I look forward to putting a face with a name when I can.

Chris

To your response to DJ's response...

Hopefully you'll be able to put faces to alot of our names during the Idol tour. But if we can't manage to get through the masses of Sanjaya lovers who will do anything for meet and greets, we might just have to wait for your own tour (next year I hope?)

I'll be trying my darndest for those meet and greets though. Seems like I'll have to chase down a guy in a Poptart suit to get them. Whatever it takes. lol.

The reason why some
Will continue to rip you:
The last paragraph

ChrisSligh said...

White Noise,

Nice name, btw.

In reading my last comment, I can't see how anyone could possibly be offended by that; so, I assume you're talking about the last paragraph of the blog post. If they get up in arms over that, then they deserve to be ignored. The only derogatory term I used was:

"I would hate for their stupidity to get back to my friends..."

The derogatory term I used there is literally the only term I can use outside of perhaps "silliness". As I've been told several times: grow a thicker skin, if you're going to put yourself out on the internet. And it's a little ironic that the people who curse me with F-this and F-that are offended by "stupidity". I just think people are looking to find something wrong and when they can't find anything real, they find something imagined. So, my only option is to live life and forget about the "vile white noise".

Thanks for stopping by,
Chris

Carrie said...

I still think it's the funniest thing ever that people can't believe you're friends with Blake. He's the one who has a little paragraph about you on the back of one of his trading cards, so whatever.

PS Thank you for not mentioning Cake 359043 times anymore. I'm sick of hearing it and I think it's disgusting (on the obsession level of some people) because it's basically a bunch of girls living in some untrue fantasy.

To Chris & All,
From GDA

1) We are doing a disservice to White Noise because White Noise has several useful applications.
A better comparison would be to tape hiss on sound recordings. You want the best recorded sound to noise ratio possible, i.e. the sound source, usually music, to be much louder than the tape hiss. Perfect situation would be only music with no tape hiss.

2) I over edited the earlier remarks on this, it should have been:
Do you ever have concern that this blog is losing innocence, openness and spontaneity ?
The first posting I read you were expressing your frustration on how you were being quote out of context and misquoted elsewhere that was reflecting unjustifiably on you as a person. Later you were imploring people to read what you post without searching for hidden meanings: “I don’t do double entendres”.
Apparently things are occurring external to the blog which is making you increasingly wary about what you report concerning events in your public life. How unfortunate and tedious.

3) Until I read your reply to Vile White Noise, the extraordinary notion that there are people who find it worthwhile to waste time to seek out this site just to submit post to make personal attacks never occurred to me. Risking being trite, this just wrong and alarming! You are being chartable in commenting only on their behaviour .

I hope you can fortify your spirit against being disillusioned, demoralized or otherwise contaminated.

Peace, health & Prosperity

Chris,

Ah, I recognize the toxic pen of "vile white noise" and indeed he/she is a frequent poster of one of the sites I mentioned in my earlier post. I could not believe how much time they had spent in discussing you at great length. You could almost call it obsessive. There are so many things you could say about someone who spends hours, no days trash talking someone they've only seen on t.v. and never met. To me, well, the words that most spring to mind are pathetic, psychotic, and just plain creepy. Ah, but I digress. The only point I really wanted to make was this, I know it's hard to ignore when they come here, but you also know what these posters seek more than anything else is to elicit a response from you. They love nothing more than for you to attempt to explain, defend and/or even try to win them over. You can't win these types over. They exist to hurt, enrage and tear down. By hitting your delete button you at least deprive them of having a voice here.

So, just keep hitting delete Chris! Your fans aren't even a little interested in their opinions.

P.S. Hope it doesn't disappoint you to know my first name is not Dave.

LIGHTENING UP, or trying to.

I believe that you specifically will the following amusing because of a posting by you elsewhere and excerpts from various interviews.
The following stanza is from a book published in 1972 by the late actor Victor Buono. The title is “It Could Be Verse”, the poem is “Bless Me, Doctor”.

But Thursday brought the worst disgrace:
On Thursday I was very base;
I looked the Devil in the face -
I should have known he’d trap me.
I got into a kind of race
Which I won with easy grace.
The race was in a pizza place -
Slap me, Someone, Slap me.

Victor Buono; Bless me, Doctor (1972)

ChrisSligh said...

GDA,

Thanks for the lightening and the comments before.

To answer your questions:

1) Haha...I think it's just that white noise is a common misnomer. DJ used it and I remarked on it. Sorry to offend your sensibilties.

2) I think that while I am part of the American Idol experience, the blog must lose part of it's innocence because there are relationships involved. I wish that I could comment on my friends because in normal life I would comment on my friends (and I did before the AI experience). But I can't take a chance that these other public figures who happen to be my friends hear anything negative from my blog about them, because trust can be lost in a second.

3) Yes, there are people who actually find this site and leave me comments that no one should have to read. There's a lot of hatred in this world and I am the brunt of a small small portion of it...really, from my best guess, from 2-5 people (the comments are usually worded similarly, so it's easy to recognize). But I'm learning to simply delete and head on. As DJ said, they live to get a response, so I'm trying to not satisfy their need.

Anyway, thanks,
Chris

Glad you're back - and in a good frame of mind. Looks like the vacation did you good - chilling on the beach and swimming with the fishies will do that. I was glad to see you turn off the comments and keep the blogging to a minimum while you were gone. Sometimes you just gotta take a break.

Did you guys check out any of the old Mayan ruins down there? (Tulum is a fascinating place - especially if you just watched Apocalypto - which I just did). I'm a big snorkler/diver too - and there's nothing like it. You tend to not worry about stuff as much when you're floating through a school of tarpon or grouper - or see some 6 foot barracuda staring at you.

Anyway - glad you're back - and looking forward to Greenville next month.

Peace -

I KNOW BETTER!
I should not of made the “charitable” remark but I let myself get caught up in the moment with my concern. I know that you don’t acknowledge certain people who are behaving badly, much less respond, that any recognition is rewarding and is like to reinforce that unwanted behavior and make it more resistant to extinction.
I am frustrated, there are a couple more things that I think should be said but saying them here will diminish, if not rob, them of their usefulness.

Take care

I can see why you feel the pressure of trust between friends and stuff, but probably the best way out is to be yourself, and not let ramdom people's view bother you. By the way I am a cake fan and really wish to hear about them in the tour. Has the rehearsal begun yet?

What's going on with your official website (chris sligh dot com)? There hasn't been any activity there in about a month. Is it still active or are you letting it go?
Also, why no link to it from your blog?
TIA for answering.

Sounds like an awesome vacation! Did you swim with the dolphins? I got to do that once, I'd definitely do it again if I get the opportunity. The snorkeling sounds amazing!! I wouldn't have taken off my vest though. too chicken. haha.

Good to see things back to normal around here. I don't post much but I do read often, I submitted a post and came back and everything was on lockdown. I guess I should be glad I missed it and I'm glad you're back!

Sorry about the mean people, I'll never understand that.

and thanks for keeping in touch I think it's really cool.

To Chris,

Moving onto a cheerier topic where any memories invoked are welcomed.

Do you know about The Cirque du Soleil show: The Beatle’s Love?
According to the write up it’s origin comes from George Harrison’s friendship with Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Lalibert with McCartney, Starkey, Ono and Olivia Harrison authorizing it’s creation

It is basically a remix collection created by George Martin & his son Giles. There are montages and medleys that have parts from others songs flown into them.
Going to the site will tell/show you more than I can readily explain, I think you will find much to investigate. The weekly updated podcast does require a subscription, though. http://www.thebeatles.com/hub/love/site/

Hopefully you have something greater than a dial up connection that won’t make the streaming items a challenged experience.

There are two interesting screensavers with soundtracks that I assume are the complete track in each case.
Kaleidoscope has “Strawberry Fields Forever” Lennon on acoustic guitar that brings in Harrison’s slide guitar work then the other elements with end a medley of excepts from Sgt. Pepper‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band, In My Life, Penny Lane, Piggies, Hello Goodbye over the rhythm bed. The end result is a blend of the familiar with something surprising
Rain Letters has “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, Harrison on acoustic guitar joined by a string section.

On your Mac lap are you inclined to use screensavers? or is the batter charge duration a negative consideration?

Anything to report on the album or is it still very premature?

Wow! It sounds like you had an amazing vacation!! I would love to do that sometime with my husband... a week at the ocean, just the 2 of us... sounds completely wonderful!! I am glad to hear that you got the rest that you needed and are ready to go again! (and I LOVE to hear how much you love and adore your wife! She is a very lucky girl!)

GDAhimself -

The LOVE album is great! The only thing I was disappointed in was that there were not enough medleys, and the montages mainly ran between songs rather than through them. They functioned more as intros and endings rather than songs redesigned in total. I guess it was designed that way to complement the actual show.

Here are a couple of sites with an analysis of the songs:

My favorite Beatles screensavers are the Yellow Submarine and Sgt. Pepper screensavers from this site:

GDA,

As far as my album goes: the way the rules work at AI is that I can't sign with anyone else until August 23, three months after the finale. So, I have to wait till then to sign with management and labels. So, final album preperations are a while off.

It looks like most of the labels I'm in talks with are going to give me creative control (and that's an important piece for me) because of selling a lot of records independently, so I'll be able to do, within reason, what I want for the record.

I'll probably use 5-6 songs from the record and the 7-8 songs that I haven't recorded before or are completely new songs. I'm pretty excited about some of the new stuff that I've been writing...it's different and new for me, so that's always cool.

Hope that answers the questions,
Chris

And speaking of medleys, how about the catchy Sligh hooks that are revolving in our heads? Here's a short medley of Sligh verses (choruses only) that seem to flow nicely together. I won't print the lyrics because I don't know if I'm allowed to. Just sing along in your head:

The chorus of Waiting
The chorus of Tunnel Vision
The chorus of Rise
The chorus of Tunnel Vision
The chorus of Gone
The chorus of Tunnel Vision

(Just a plug for the remastered HPF CD)

To Chris,
From GDA,

I thank you for the reply.

I trust that the three month wait isn't to patience taxing, but you will probably benefit in the extra time you have to shop and decide on your ultimate choice of management and label.
I hope it and the tour schedule doesn't prevent you from laying some basic tracks while your excitement with the new material is still fresh.

Chris,

Do you have an agent or is that the same as a management company? Are you communicating with these labels directly or is that handled via some intermediary? Congratulations on retaining creative control. After reading about Kelly Clarkson's battles with Clive and her manager, I sometimes worry. Keeping that balance between artistic integrity and commercial success is key. Best wishes and have fun on the tour.
