Q & A

All righty. Let's give this a try.

Someone suggested doing a Q & A, so let's give it a try.

You give a question, I'll give you an answer.

Ground rules: do not try to get me to say something negative about fellow contestants or the show. Don't ask me about vftw. Don't ask me about conspiracy theories with the show, or any conspiracy theories at all. If you are not a fan of me (or any other contestant for that matter), please still be respectful in your question.

Here is an example of a disrespectful question: "So why are you so fat?" Though you might think it's funny, chances are I won't. Yes, I have a weight problem, but I'm working hard to lose the weight, and have lost 35 pounds and counting. Anyway, disrepectful stupid questions won't get published.

So, ask away. Give me time with each question. I'll try to get to them all.

Phil's album review was too, too funny. Need to keep that one around for your book!

If you aren't tired of answering questiones yet - were did HPF name come from?

Good luck on Ellen. Know a lot of people will be watching.

How about excitingmrbrown music. Have heard a couple online and really liked "Leave The Light On". Chalk it up to my upbringing. In line with making your first million, think it would be really marketable (that's if we want to consider crass stuff like food, roof, feeding the puppies).

Keep on being Chris and go with God.

Hello again Chris,

I just have to say that I think it's amazing how you actually make time out of what must be such a crazy, busy schedule to answer questions about yourself for your fans.

It brought a smile to my face to picture you sitting at an airport waiting to board a plane for the Ellen show... (did you ever think you'd be doing that?) and then knowing that in those moments you were writing to your fans.....(How cool is that?)

Anyway, it's an awesome thing to share so Thank You!

You have mentioned that you're planning on *wowing* us all at the finale, so if it's not supposed to be too much of a surprise come the end of May, I'd like to know if you're planning on cutting off the "Fro"? (loved your wedding pic, by the way!) and was just wondering if you're considering a shorter style?

:~)

Take good care of yourself now, and
God Bless you with every good thing!

Nora

Kudos if you can actually answer all the fans. Anyway I don't have a question, just bringing up a missed opportunity. When you were with Peter Noone, you could've asked him about his song "She's A Muscular Boy". He would've got a chuckle out of it. Google it to get the story.

Hey Chris,

I think that this is Awesome that you set this up. Thank you. I absolutely love your band. I've told a couple friends about it and they've loved it. You have an amazing talent given by God and I think it's great that you've incorporated Him into your songs. OK, now for the questions..

1. When you were on Idol, were you able to meet any past contestants? (i.e. Carrie Underwood when she guest-starred)

2. My favorite performance of yours would have to be "Everything She Does" by the Police. Any chance of it being on the American Idol CD or you releasing a single of it?

God Bless,
Justin

I'm in L.A. in a hotel getting ready to go grab some food. The flight from Charlotte was miserable, so I'm glad to be here. I'll see how many I can get here for you guys.

Also, read through the whol Q&A...if I don't answer your questions specifically, chances are, the questions were answered at some point before.

DBlade, I've actually gotten to email Kay a coupla times, so that was really cool. She's great, isn't she? As far as an interview, I don't have a problem with her posting some of these q & a, but I can't really do an exclusive. And I loved the slighcon stuff on the boards...that was hilarious....and the silliness and sligh-kus...I really honestly believe my fan base was the best, if not the biggest.

To the poster who posted about prayer: there were a couple of other Christians there this year - Jordin, Melinda and Phil are the 3 who I know for sure are Christians and we would talk about our faith a lot together...no real times of prayer, though Phil and I prayed together a few times.

I like waffles

My favorite contestant last year was probably Daughtry, though I really liked Taylor & Elliot, too...I mean all 3 of them were so good.

To the question about people being close: Chris and Blake are very close. Chris and Hailey are very close. And I was very close with Chris, Phil & Blake.

Mandi, I would love to work with Bono...I hope to get involved with ONe once the show is over.

Tyson, I love all the contestants - not enough time to describe them. But the theme I was most looking forward to was actually last week (standards) or Bon Jovi.

Tracy, I haven't had much contact with Tom since he got voted off. But Rudy and I talk about once a week or once every coupla weeks. Rudy was probably my best friend through the whole AI process...it really sucked to see him go so early.

To the anonymous poster: I never was pressured to lose weight, but I wanted to for me. 2) Obviously you want to be a success just because selling millions of records opens up a LOT of doors for you. But being a success for me is different: I want to be able to do music for a living, so if I sell millions of records, it's just icing on the cake. 3) Byrd was awesome.

Risalea, I'm actually working on a blog post to answer your question.

Niki, Chris and Blake love and hate the Cake thing. They love it because it's hilarious. They hate it because I would constantly give them a hard time about it. Whenever I'd take pictures with them, I'd always get in the middle and right as the picture was taken I'd say "Cake sandwich anyone?" They would laugh. Then cry. Like little bebes.

Becca, unfortunately, I haven't been able to make it out to the show because of being in SC, but I talk to the guys about once a week just to tell them I love them and I'm rooting for them.

To the anonymous poster: I'm not sure I agree with the somber comments...I mean we had a lot of fun. As far as the book: I'd love to write a book about life, my life and how fun the whole AI experience has been. We'll see how it turns out. I'm still writing about childhood now...plus I'm working on my novel...and 2 screenplays. Crap...I'm too busy.

My wife and I met at church. Our first date was Aug 22, we got engaged Dec. 12 and got married May 9...it was perfect. And we're waiting for kids till we figure out what our life is going to look like a year from now.

All right...off to dinner...more later

Ive posted this before and it didn't go through, but here it is again.

Chris, you should start a Sligh work out regiment "lose wiegth on the sligh". We can all work at it together and encourage one another. Do you have any tips to give in regards to your 35 lbs of success?

BTW: Im a fan. Love the cd, love the band, love you and I will continue to be a fan as long as you continue to stay true to God's service and will for your life. Blessings!

Just wanted to say the songs on your cd are amazingly hooky. Listening to just one song, I found myself humming the melody. Great Job.

Anonymous said...

sounds like after 6 years of ai , the song choices may have passed their dates of expiraton. some of the same songs have been retreaded, and do you like me think that a 2 or 3 year break should be in order.

Chris,

I posted this question in a previous entry, so forgive me if it's redundant now. However, and understandably, you didn't answer it then, so I'm hoping you will share your thoughts on it here.

Do you think you might record with Gina at some point, either a song or two or an entire album?

Anonymous said...

Chris, I just wanted to say that I think it's really great that you refuse to speak badly about your fellow contestants. I wish all former contestants were as thoughtful as you. (sorry, I know I am supposed to have a question. Maybe next time lol)

Have a GREAT week!

Hey Chris....I'ma huge fan. I thought you really deserved to be in Top 5. I guess the last few weeks really got to you. Still deserved to be there longer. Anyway, have you been watching American Idol AND voting ever since you went home?! If you do vote, who do you vote for?! If you don't, who do you feel will win and what do you feel about the media attention over Sanjaya?! Thanks.

BTW.....you would've killed it with "Smooth"!. It would've probably been one of your best performances!.

Hey, Chris

What advice would you give to other aspiring musicians who are thinking of auditioning for the show this year? What exactly are they looking for in a contestant?

Do you have to read and write music to compete?

Thanks,

Hey Chris, I really enjoyed watching you on the show. I even promoted you on my myspace.

-Will your wife join you on the tour? Any other family members coming along for the trip?

-Have you gotten to meet a lot of your fans in person?

-Do you have any idea what the tour is going be like in the term of crazy masses of fans? (I do!)

-Have you been to an Idol concert before?

I'm curious, is it your AI contract that would keep you from doing an interview with the fansite?

Chris, At first I was devastated when you were voted off but after hearing half past forever I know you will be fine. My question is this:
During Every Little Thing there was piped echo behind you. Anyone who sings (or talks on a cell phone that echos back) knows how distracting it can be to hear your own voice while you are singing/speaking. Did that distract you and do you feel that hurt your performance? That reverb bothered me while I was watching the performance.
Keep up the fantastic work, good luck on the weight, I love you just the way you are.

Hey Chris,

I actually loved your version of Endless Love and ended up buying it from the American Idol website. When I heard the song, I was pretty amazed. Of course, I can't recall how the original goes. Anyway, I probably wasn't as surprised as you when the judges didn't like it, but I was surprised.

I like starting off questions with compliments...anyway, I was wondering if you've experienced any truly negative aspects of becoming popular and somewhat famous. I know two people on YouTube who have been gaining a large fan base on that site and have already had their privacy violated in too many bad ways. And their audience is in the thousands, not millions like yourself.

Anonymous said...

Chris,
I was actually having this discussion with my husband not long ago. Anyway, are you able to overlook an artist's song if his/her social, political, or religious beliefs are stated, or maybe if they have an agenda that you disagree with, and still appreciate it for its musical merit? Like say how Ani Difranco, the Dixie Chicks, or a billion contemporary folk artists out there do.

Hey, I was wondering if you ever considered doing a U2 song? My wife and I were so dissapointed that you had to leave because we were hoping you'd be the first person on AI to do U2 (and of course, that we thought you're the best!). Is there a reason that nobody else has done U2 before, like they won't clear the songs or something? Just imagining you doing "Where the Streets Have No Name" gives me chills!

Hi Chris,
I have read enough about you that I know we grew up with quite similiar backgrounds. My dad happens to be a pastor and we didn't get three choices of colleges but only one. Other kids at the church and school got the same three as you though. LOL Maybe you all came by on deputation. :o)

I have wondered quite a bit about your parents. How are they doing with you going a different direction with your music? Do you feel like they realize you are still a growing, maturing Christian even though you have changed some? I know there is a piece of us that always wants to please our parents even when we are grown up. Does it ever bother you or have your parents really shown you the support you are hoping for?

Also, I know that your album was as high as #25 (or so) on amazon.com sales. I looked at the latest Billboard top 100 (which is the most I can see without a subscription) and HPF is not there. Do you know if you're in the top 200?

I read somewhere that once you get to the top 10, you are given a clothing allowance for each week. I was wondering what the process was for choosing the clothing - did someone choose for you, or did you go shopping. Did you get to keep the clothing?

Also

I read where you said your parents watched the show, but I was wondering what their response was to you being on the show, and did they support you - considering they are still IFB (I am from that background also) Do they support your HPF album?

Thanks for taking the time to connect with your fans - you are awesome!

I'm curious, you seem to be slammed doing interviews literally everywhere (I keep updated on your fan site), do all the AI top 10 do this as well?

That was my only question, and honestly if you don't have time to respond,no worries. I really posted so I could wish you much success, and while totally cheesy to say, I hope you stay true to who you are, it's my belief this is why you are being embraced by so many people.

How will you, as a professing Christian, handle being on the Ellen show? Do you think a Christian should be on a show with a known lesbian? What will you say if she asks you what you think (as a Christian) of her lifestyle?

ChrisSligh said...

Okay, so I'm trying to keep up with comments as best as possible. Please respect that. I don't need emails saying "Chris Sligh, I thought you were better than this" or 17 emails straight saying "Please publish my comment!" Your questions are being answered in succession of being received. I have like 200 comments that I have to catch up, not counting other ones that are coming. So, please...I'm doing this for you - don't punish me because of an overwhelming response. The majority of you have been great. There have just been a couple anonymous posters kinda acting like a jerk.

On to questions.

To anonymous person: I'm not sure why there have been fewer group numbers...it's just something where maybe the themes didn't really fit group numbers. I think, also, that the group numbers are everyone's least favorite thing. It's a struggle, honestly, to get those things together.

Ladybug...my dad has wavy hair. My mom has curly hair...so I got it from both sides. The odd thing is that I had bone straight blonde hair until I was about 4, then from the bottom of my head up, it slowly turned curly and brown. Wierd, huh?

Callie, I'm hoping to do either "She's Not There" or "Endless Love" on tour...but it's not really up to me...we'll see what they choose. 2) I don't know if I've had a movie character as much as a tv character...Doug on King of Queen has so many of my quirks that it's hilarious. Sarah and I watch it and laugh at how similar we are to each other. 3) I'd say my favorite song(s) are How Long and Cry Tonight. Maybe if I have a #1 single someday that will become my favorite because it will make me a lot of money! : ) 4) I honestly don't know.

Melissa, I said this in another comment: I don't really want to go down through everyone, for time considerations. I'll say this though I have great respect in one way or another for all 12.

Anonymous: my favorite band is MuteMath or Muse or Switchfoot. The nicest contestant was definitely Carrie Underwood.

Anonymous Canadian: Basically, HPF is a solo project with a band name...I write all the songs, produce, arrange, etc. So, my solo record, if I do a solo record will definitely be in a similar vein to HPF. I'm very proud of HPF's album because for the first time in my career I made an album that I would listen to on a regular basis. That to me is success.

Dave170, I will take songs from my whole career to make my major label debut. I'm just going to take the best songs, and so far "Know" is definitely one of my best ones. So, yes, if I sign as a solo act, "Know" will be a song on the record.

X-ray chick, Sarah and I stay close by just talking on the phone and making sure we know the other is loved. Then when we see each other we just have fun. 2) I try to read the Bible every day...sometimes it happens more consistently than others. I think staying close to God is a mindset...I just devote every day to Him as best as I can. 3) I was never once questioned for my faith on the show. 4) Getting rid of Dr. Pepper from my diet and replacing it with water. 5) "Amazed" by Desperation band. 6) I'll write my own stuff or co-write. It'll definitely be a rock record, more on the pop side of rock though. 7) Never. Ryan was my favorite person involved with the show.

Anonymous: I never really took anyone's suggestions on song choice...I chose stuff that I would want to record. It was more fun for me that way. Bad choice for a competition, but nonetheless I had fun.

Risa, I got married and was a poor musician...I couldn't afford to go back to school and honestly didn't have the time. I will probably go back soon to finish up.

Beth...is this the same Beth I knew in college and the Wilds? Anyway...I tried to stay out of the way at the Easter service, and for the most part succeeded. I wanted the focus to be on the service, not on my homecoming, so I sat backstage for the preaching in all 3 services. We did have our highest numbers ever for our church, but I don't know if it was because of me. 2) Pretty much when PR asks me to do something I do it. There's not much choice. You do it or you miss out. 3) My job was great in that they gave me indefinite leave...I wasn't getting paid, but my job was waiting for me if I needed to come back to it.

I'll be able to keep up my blog from here on out. I'm sure I'll have some great pictures...we'll see. I need to break down and buy a digital camera. I know, I know...I just haven't gotten one. I won't be doing an original at the finale and I can't enter the song contest because of being a contestant.

Hi Chris. I don't know if you believe in synchronicity, but for me it's a sign from God. I have been thinking about then name Chris for a few days and now I know why.

Although I never expected to have the chance, I have had it on my heart since I first heard you sing during the auditions to tell you what a beautiful voice you have and it's such a blessing to see a person share their gift with others.

I don't remember the song you sang then but I always get goosebumps when I hear someone singing so beautifully.

And what a wonderful thing you are doing here. Taking the time to answer questions.

I don't think you need luck because you have Christ.:) Instead of luck I prefer the word "blessed".:)

Bless You.

I have no idea what a FYAD shirt is and I've never used that specific forum.

Funny story about Phil: Phil has a nervous tick of coughing hysterically. Whenever he gets nervous, he coughs. So he's backstage every show coughing up a storm. Then he goes out on stage and sings without coughing...it's really strange. Kendra (his wife) says he does it whether he's singing for 30 million people or 30 people, so it's kinda funny.

Traci, my favorite verse is Isaiah 53:10.

I am way more comfortable singing with a band than solo. And I actually auditioned Seasons 4&5. But this season I wasn't going to try out because great things were happening for the band, but a friend offered to pay for the trip down, so it was free, and who turns down free, right?

Jason, we'd love to play in Myrtle Beach...just shoot me a note on HPF's myspace.

B, a basic week on idol looks like this:
Thursday: pick songs, get with vocal coaches and cut songs, rehearse songs, go shopping for clothes.
Friday: rehearse a second time, shop for clothes
Saturday: meet with advisors, record audio tracks for Ford commercials
Sunday: Ford shoot
Monday: All day on stage with band rehearsal
Tuesday: Performance, rehearse group number
Wednesday: Rehearse choreography for group number, going home show, going home party.

SusieQ, when I read, I love to read novels: Koontz and Grisham are my favorites. However, I love Blue Like Jazz and my small group is actually studying it right now. My spiritual influences are my dad and a pastor named Peter Hubbard.

Blake is an incredible artist and musician. I'm excited about his record when it comes out.

Aletha, we don't really have any recordings of Mr. Brown, but I think Mr. Brown will be a side project in the future, so we'll have to record those songs. Btw, I'm a big "She Don't Know" fan, too. It's one of my favorite songs I"ve written.

Pat, I got very close with Sundance. We talk about once a week still.

Simon is a nice guy, but honestly we don't get a lot of contact outside the show with the judges. I'd love to record something with Gina, Phil or Blake...Gina and Phil because I think we mesh well. Blake because I think whatever he records will make a lot of money.

The Gee Bees (my quartet in Hollywood week) has joked around about recording that song. We'll see...maybe that will be another side project for me.

Lisa, I'm not sure how things would change...but I'm not sure I would agree that things need to change...the beauty of AI is that people get to vote and get behind someone as much as possible.

Will, I've never seen Ishtar...I'll have to check it out.

Joy: Tomlin; Hillsong; hot; fruit; Garfield. I'd say it was just something of making my faith my own...it just didn't happen until I was in my 20s. I'd say to simply make the choice every day to make right choices.

I don't really think I overanalyze, though I tend to think hard about any choices I make. There are perhaps some things I overthink...but this blog is not that at all. My blog is just a place to talk from my mind to your eyes.

Robert, I'd love to get back down to Pensacola...it's been 10 years now. And I'm not sure if I'll be there at the ARC conference.

Obviously boxers.

Pistol: I'd love to have Gina...not sure in what facet.

JPL is pretty cool, and I have heard some of his songs...he's actually not a bad songwriter - I was surprised at how good it was.

My favorite time of year is spring because it's cool enough to be cool but warm enough not to be hot. If I knew the meaning of life I'd have won American Idol and I'd sell the meaning of life on a late night infomercial. My parents gave me a choice of 3 colleges. I chose the one with the best music school.

Jessykaw, the bubble just refers to us being with each other all the time without much contact with the outside world. Check out my weekly schedule to get an idea of what the days were like.

Christina, I love Mixed Tape - great song. I've never seen them in concert. 2) For me writing is a long process...I usually write the basis of a song first, then let it sit for a while, then I rewrite, rewrite, rewrite till I get a good one.

Jessica, of the 8 left, Phil, Melinda and Jordin are Christ-followers. I think they also are the ones you could trust to make great, offense-free music.

James, I lost my virginity on my wedding night. My wife was a virgin also, so it was a very special moment.

iPek, I don't really play the bongos...I was just joking around.

Jenn K., my favorite hymn is "I Stand Amazed", 2) Not really, though obviously everything has some influenced, but my lyrics are a little more obtuse than most hymns. 3) I used to preach quite a bit, actually. And yes, I've heard of Apologetix.

Katie, I've been there one time. Very nice.

Ben, I think that the important thing to realize is that in order for God to bless you, you have to put in the time and the work...he doesn't bless laziness. I have worked for 7 years now to make a career in music - 10 years if you count the studying I did to learn music in school. So God simply opens doors or closes them...He opened a lot of doors for Idol that can only be explained in that way.

Matthew, I chose to disassociate myself from BJU for a multitude of reasons, the main one being that I don't agree with their stance specificially on separation. As I said in several interviews: BJU is not the sect of Christianity I want to be associated with.

Evanescence is not one of my favorite bands, but I love Amy Lee's voice...their music just isn't really my style.

All right...to bed...more later.

Maybe you will be able to think of a way to make things less complicated and still get all of us Chris-lovers the info we are craving (Ha ha, guess that would be called a bio or memoir, huh??)

Crazy, isn't it? You probably never imagined in your wildest dreams that this would be the way that God would choose you to share His witness and His love!

Hey Chris,

Simple question with an interesting back story. I'll ask the question and then give you the reason I need to know, it may get long but should be worth your while and maybe give you a smile:)

The Question: How tall are the Top 10 AI finalists? (If you can't get exact numbers, guesses are acceptable)

The Back Story: As mentioned in my previous question (about doing an interview) I do a pop culture blog from a Christian perspective at rollinwithdice.blogspot.com . A few weeks ago, in my weekly "Idol Thoughts" post, I briefly asked the question, "How tall is this Jordin Sparks girl anyway?" Well, within days I was getting plenty of google hits from people asking the same question. So I did what any responsible blogger would do, I found the answer. My research revealed that she was 6 feet tall. Last week I posted that info, since people were looking for it, and thought that the Idol heights chapter in my life was over. Nope. Now, I'm getting hundreds of hits a day from people searching for heights of Haley, Gina, Lakisha, Phil, etc. So apparently it falls to me to find this information out. I knew my boy Sligh was doing a Q and A and so here I am. Now I just need you to help a brother blogger out, and get me the inside scoop :)

BTW, thanks for your honesty and openness here on the blog, very refreshing.

Got my cd from amazon yesterday and love it. We were introduced to your music when you sang at Soutshide Fellowship awhile back and have been hooked ever since. Here are my question: 1) Do you think the remaining AI contestents are afraid to reply to the judges because of the backlash earlier in the season? If I hear Haley say one more time "I really appreciate what the judges have to say" I could understand if they were giving some type of feedback, but every week they basically just tell her, "well...at least your hot" How can she possibly appreciate that?
2) I've heard some pretty harsh comments (Russ Cassell) about your bypassing the G-Drive opening day for the Ellen show. Seems like a sound business decision to me. Would you like to explain?

I know i've already asked a question but i've just got one more!!!

What key is "Know" and "In a Moment in?

I play the piano and would love to be able to play them for fun. When it comes to vocals, I'm basicly tone-deaf so It's hard for me to determine what key the songs are in by myself XD

Is there any shred of a chance that an uncut version of "How Deep Is Your Love" from Hollywood Week would ever be made available as a download? I'm guessing probably not but... that was the highlight of the season as far as I'm concerned. I'd pay way more than 99 cents for that, I tell you. (I think I read somewhere where you said you were just lucky to be in that group and couldn't take a lot of credit for it, but that's not fair, your voice stood out clearly and sounded great.)

Anonymous because I'm way too old for people to know just how many times I watched the HDIYL clip on YouTube.

Anonymous said...

Oh, oops. I just posted a minute ago about whether a recording of HDIYL might ever be available. Then I saw that it was asked and answered already. Sorry---you can just delete that Q if you like. (I wanted to read the whole page but my lunch break was over so I did a fast Ctrl+F for "how deep" and "bee gees", thought I was in the clear.)

Anonymous said...

Hello again!

On your CD, your beautiful voice is mainly showcased solo, which is appropriate for the musical style of the songs. However, I was wondering if you would consider for future song arrangements incorporating more vocal harmonies into the mix? (either by overdubbing your own voice or combining band member vocals)

Reading your blog, I found it interesting that you liked the Beatles White Album the best of the lot. Curiously, this album is a collection of songs mainly written individually by the band members instead of the traditional Lennon-McCartney song collaborations. What do you think of the "pre-White Album" records such as Rubber Soul or Sgt. Pepper?

Also, I love your Communion song (the vocal and melody), although the sentiment escapes me (I'm Jewish).

Well that's all for now.
And may all your dreams come true....

Considering the question of you being a member of the SomethingAwful forums has already been answered, I guess there's only one other pressing question on my mind, and if the answer would get overly long or complicated, feel free not to answer.

I've been trying to get a band started for a while now, and I think I might finally have my foot in the door, so to speak. If this does, in fact, take off, would there any advice you could give to prevent blowing it while we're still a fledgling production? I ask because you're the artist with whom I have the most accessible form of contact and I respect what you say, and I apologize if it's going too far for a simple Q&A session.

Many thanks in advance,

hi, question about dress rehearsals.

i've heard that both the results and performance days have dress rehearsals.

i'm confused about how that would work. is the whole show rehearsed or just the songs? if the former, do you get the judges comments before the live taping?

and does the results show have a rehearsal as well? i've heard it does for time reasons but don't understand how that would work...

thanks!

Another comment...Chris you are an amazing person; it shows in your love for music, in your performances, in your singing, and in your writing. I know that today's lookist society puts pressure on performers to be slim, but you look amazing the way you are. You're original, funky, unique and YOU. Even my husband (a professional musician) was hoping that you would finish first, simply because you are not the typical generic performer.

So as you/someone mentioned, you're a fan of Jack's Mannequin.. personally Andrew McMahon is one of my favorite songwriters, ever. He's so amazing. But anyway, are you just generally into the band, or have you followed Something corporate as well/followed Andrew thorughout his career. Such a random question, but I guess I'm really intrigued.I'm such a huge dan of Andrew's, he's an amazing person, so down to earth and obviously incredibly talented - And he never fails to put every single ounce of emotion into his songs.

1. Has this experience changed you, or (in your opinion) any of the other contestants?
2. Is that the real Paula, Simon, or Randy on the show or is it all an act (eg. Simon's general insensitivity, or Paula's over-the-top niceness)?
3. Are the jokes prescripted, as far as you know, or is it genuinely spontaneous?

Anonymous said...

Chris, have you heard Simon's latest comments about this season's group of contestants?

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20007164_20008533_20034499,00.html

"Many Idol fans have targeted the talent level, wondering whether the likes of Haley Scarnato can compete with previous standouts like Clarkson and Underwood. ''We're doing as well as we are doing with not a great cast at the moment, to be honest with you,'' says judge Simon Cowell. ''They're not the best bunch of kids we've ever had.'' He may have a point: You know there's a problem when the most glowing compliment guest mentor Tony Bennett can muster about the contestants is ''They're all very competent... '' Even the typically wimpy Paula Abdul has grown some claws this season. ''I just can't say that they're really good if they're not,'' she explains. ''I just can't anymore.''"

The general consensus is that this season is lacking in charisma and the talent level is lower. The judges sound disappointed with your group.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts.

Great job on Idol! I was wondering if while on the show if you and the others ever stumbled across that professional voice teacher's reviews of the performances (masterclasslady.com). They're unique in that they don't ever blast an artist, but start out with some praise and then a critique for improvement.

If not, maybe you'd want to give your friends on the show a "heads up" about the site. Her advice might help them.

Hey Sligh. ;)

I hate to bug you, but there's a rumor going around my school saying you really don't like the "cake" thing at all. Not just that you think it's weird, but that you actively say things to stop fans from participating in anything that has to do with cake.

It's been driving me crazy, because I didn't really think you of the kind of guy who would bother with that kind of thing, whether you hate it or not. :\

Clear it up for me? I'll love you forever. (I'd say I'd have your baby, only you already have someone for that job. And I'll say she's beautiful, no matter how jealous I am, just in case she's standing behind you right now. :D)

I m definitely pro-life. However, on most of the issues I care about, at this point, no republican has stepped up...I would rather vote republican, but I vote for issues - and who fits the most issues that I believe strongly about. Just because someone disagrees with one thing doesn't cause me to not vote for them. I hesitate to get into a political debate, but right now Obama SEEMS to be the best candidate. But we'll see the closer we get to election.

If you had to pick between the lyrics of a song or the instrumentals, which one would it be? Meaning, would you rather have an amazing band backing you up with so-so lyrics; or would you rather have an a capella performance with extremely passionate, meaningful lyrics?

Also: I'm always interested to hear from a musician's standpoint which is the most important, the technicality (ie. pitch, timing..) or the emotion (ie. lyrics, connection..)

The one thing I'd ask is this: as a whole, do you see the church in our country emerging from some of the stale legalism of the past in order to minister in a way that is relevant to where people are at today? And how can music best be used to reach that end?

Dude, it was awesome to see ya represent in such a positive way. Keep it up...

Dude, you left us all hangin' on that "do you like waffles" issue. I lost sleep over it dude LOL

Seriously, I think in some cases the band is a little weak at times. How much input and time do you spend with the band before?

I think they said you were too fast, but I think the band was sluggish on one of your tracks.

How did you like Hollywierd? As an Angelino I know it can be pretty dissapointing the first time anyone visits. Hopefully you checked out the Sunset scene, some of the new bands there (especially late in the am) rock, or will once they get it together.

Personally I think you were voted off for looks alone, and I know AI is looking for the total package, it is a singing contest, so lets make it totally for singing. Haley is juicy and all that (ALL THAT!!!), but she ain't. Just ain't musically.

I do not know how Elliott Yazmin made it so far last year because of this. For me, he is probably the most interesting talent ever on AI.

More questions and answers - I apologize for not being able to get to any lately. I've been crazy busy.

Anyway, I have a few minutes real quick...don't know how many I'll get to.

Stephanie Edwards was what I meant by Stephanie Caldwell.

Robyn, I first got interested in music in high school, and I wrote my first song at 15...my dad and I sang it in church - it was called "Heaven". But I was a jock in high school, really focused on sports. So, my freshman year of college is when I got really interested in music.

Billy, if I had one piece of advice it would be to simply do what you love, learn your craft, whatever that may be and work your butt off to be the best at what you do. For me it was songwriting...I have worked hard to be a better songwriter, and the songs are sold by my voice being as good as I can get it. So, to all the wanna-be rock stars like me: work hard, it's the only way.

Sorry gotta run...more later

Hello again.

In your songwriting process:

A. Which comes first most often - the melody or the lyrics?

B. When/where do your musical ideas (songs, arrangements) come to you?

C. On your CD, your beautiful voice is mainly showcased solo, which is appropriate for the musical style. Would you consider incorporating more vocal harmony into your future arrangements?

I just left you a CD review on Amazon. Do you have any idea how many copies have sold to date?

Anonymous said...

Hi again Chris, thanks very much for answering my previous question. :)

I'm not sure if you can answer this one or not (I'm very glad you're monitoring comments before they're posted so you can edit my post down as necessary, if you get a chance to answer). So you mentioned once in your blog that the American Idol voting is monitored by like 6 people (from something like 'standards'?) to make sure it's fair. Do you have any more details on this?

I don't know if you've heard of Ricky who posts spoilers on Idol Forums (http://myspace.com/reekzonfiah), but his spoilers have been pretty accurate and he seems to have good sources. Anyway, he posted this on his blog:

"Did Sanjaya Malakar have the lowest amount of votes last wednesday night? No he did not! It is funny actually because American Idol in their credits even say "they can manipulate everything they do." Sanjaya was in fact third lowest, and Lakisha was the lowest, followed by Phil inbetween the two. Last nights result show was as follows.

7. Melinda
6. Jordin
5. Blake
4. Chris
3. Sanjaya
2. Phil
1. Lakisha

how about them apples?

Why would they do this? Idol Gives Back is VERY important -- they want quality for this round. It was the perfect time to take out Sanjaya. They would also like a Blake Vs Jordin finale like I said BEFORE all the media attention about them being the chosen F2. putting Blake in B3 gets him more votes next week by rabid fans."

So, if it were true that AI can minupulate the results, I'm sure you'd have signed a million things not to divulge that... but that doesn't mean you have to go out of your way to contradict it either. So how about this... if you answer, and tell me that you are absolutely 100% positive that the person with the lowest number of votes get voted off, I will totally believe you over Ricky in a heartbeat. And if you don't answer... I'll assume that a) either you didn't have time to answer ;) or b) there may be some truth to what Ricky says about the show not necessarily sending home the person with the lowest votes. So in other words, if there's truth to that, don't answer. Make sense? ;)

Thanks again for having this cool blog! You definitely left AI way, way before your time, but I'm really glad you made the tour. Good luck with your band in the meantime, and in the future!

What do the Idol contestants do if they come down with a whopping case of the 24 flu one Tuesday morning? I'm talking about the kind of flu where you wouldn't want to be more than 3 steps from a bathroom! What would happen then? Would they be forced out of the competition? Or what?

Are you planning to come out and meet your fans on the AI tour? Not hide out inside?

Oh...and after the infamous 'Hi Dave' comment on Idol, I voted for you continuously. And then the next week, after voting about 100 times. You were voted off. I might be bad luck. haha...Sorry! Love ya, Chris. I'll buy your solo album for sure!

Hey Chris..I read your blog about the crap before you took it down. Anyone who is a true Chris Sligh fan doesn't believe any of that crap. Granted I don't know you personally but I don't even read the crap. Take it from someone who has been talked about alot, you only have to worry when they stop talking about you. Even bad publicity is good. At least people are talking.
Stay strong...you are awesome

Hey, I don't want to turn this into a political discussion, but I don't understand how anybody can kill Iraqi babies. Babies are babies, and the the You Es has been opening a can of whump heinie on them since Dubya Sr. and let's not even get into vaporized japanese babies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Why is it that today's christians are so in favor of imperialism? I think they would have been there rooting on the Romans, "hang that guy up there, he's against the empire!" What do you think about that?
