Studio Blog 5 (12-10-07)

12:15pm

Well, my weekend from Hades is now over. I'm wasted and still fighting off the sickness...but I'm in the studio with the killer bands of killer bands right now, so I can't complain.

Today, I have Dan Needham on drums (a first call session drummer who's played on a plethora of really big CCM albums), Jimmy Lee Sloas (who has played bass on albums ranging from Point of Grace to Megadeth and produced Downhere's 2nd album), Jerry McPherson (amazing guitar player who was in one version of White Heart, if you guys ever liked them, and has literally played on hundreds of big records) and Blair Masters (a keyboard guru who has played on and programmed for tons of stuff that you would recognize)....so, I pretty much have the masters in the studio right now.

My brother Jon is here with me, so that's kinda cool. He took off 2 days of work to come up...he went to Pensacola with Ash and me yesterday, too. I'll have a post about that trip, but it was great and interesting at the same time.

On to the session today.

I got to the studio a little late because I wasn't feeling well and when I got in, everyone was set up and ready to rock and roll. They had listened to the demo of "Running Back" and Brown had decided to start with that, and we immediately went to rocking.

We've taken several takes of everyone jamming on the song and it sounds really, really great. As with everything else, it has taken a step up from the demos. As a side note: I say that demos are crappy, but they really are pretty good for demos...but they are demos. Stuff will change from the demos because the demos are me playing everything and I am limited in my programming AND playing abilities. So, when you get incredible musicians taking my ideas and making them way way better, things start to change a little bit to a lot.

We're working on making sure everything is perfect with "Running Back" and then it's on to lunch and "Know".

9:30pm

Well, after lunch we started working on "Know". The band got in and started rocking pretty quickly. They listened to the song twice and worked out specific drum patterns and guitar sounds and then went to work.

One thing about these guys is that it's obvious they've all worked together a good bit so they know each other really well...lots of joking around, lots of stories, lots of joint stories...all of this adds up, though, to a lot of not recording. So, "Know" took for-freaking-ever to lay down. Plus, this band works a little differently than the other studio bands worked. Jimmy, the bass player likes to wait till everything is down, then go in and record his part. So, once the Dan and Jerry got their parts (through several overdubs and punching), then Jimmy would go and do his part...so it just took longer.

Brown was very kind to my production of the HPF album and very little is changing about the 4 songs from that record (3 that he is doing). "Know" is basically the exact same as the HPF recording, except it will simply sound better than the recording we did on $500 worth of equipment. The arrangement and feel are the same and the players just took mine and Adam's parts and made them better. So, it sounds incredible.

I couldn't be happier with how "Know" is sounding.

After we finished with "Know", Jerry, Blair and Jimmy were able to leave because we were done with them for the day. Dan stuck around for a while to work out a drum loop for "In A Moment". He laid down a nice little loop (after several tries that Brown and I didn't think quite worked) and then he headed out. Brown gave Stephen Leiweke a call to come and lay down soem acoustic, and we ordered pizza while waiting. Stephen got in and set up and after dinner we got to work.

When I originally wrote "In a Moment", I actually wrote the song for Phil. The HPF album was completely done, I thought, when I went to Hollywood week and Phil and I hit it off as roommates during Hollywood week, and I offered to write some songs for him. I wrote him 3 songs..."In a Moment" was 1 of them. I recorded the demo for the song (the track that ended up on the HPF album minus Adam's lead guitar and the strings) and was going to send it to Phil. Adam came over and started working on some mixes and saw the file for "In A Moment" and immediately asked what it was for...I told him and he replied that I would be stupid to give up that song. I let several people listen and they all agreed that I couldn't give that song to anyone. Because of the restrictions with Idol, I didn't feel like I should do any more recording, so we kept that arrangement, even though I really would've done another arrangement for the record than what we did.

So, all that to say: Phil didn't get the song and now that we're re-recording the song, we're doing a little bit of a different arrangement. Instead of piano based, the song is going to be acoustic and loop based...think more "I Could Not Ask For More" kind of feel, but more rocking. If that makes sense.

Anyway, Stephen is recording acoustic guitar part #2 right now. It's almost 10pm. I'm wasted. Should be done in an hour or so. Hopefully I'll be in bed by midnight. Then it's back here tomorrow bright and early.

Pensacola? As in, the place in Florida?
I'm glad you have such an awesome band.. that must make studio work fun! But what will you do when you have live shows? This band isn't staying "your" band, is it?
I can't believe you are still sick! How long has this been going on now?

Chris,
I'm just suddenly struck w/great emotion over YOU blogging to US from the recording studio! Who else would do that??? No one, that's who. You give us SO many reasons to be your fans.
You're the greatest!

Glad you've been blessed w/your dream band and that you've made it through the weekend. Look for opportunities to take care of yourself in all this activity.

Stay well.

~clarissaNaz

P.S. The mere mention of Whiteheart makes me chuckle. Lots of nostalgia there.

Know! Oh man if I could just be a little cyber fly on the wall of the studio. For many of us Know was the first taste of Chris Sligh doing his own stuff outside of Idol.

Of course I'm glad that "Running Back" is coming along. ;)
BTW your bro Jon tagged my blog a while ago with the "8 random facts" request. well I ended up writing a big ole post about 9 women from my past that pretty much unintentionally fits the bill:
http://www.bradezone.com/blog/the-nine/

It's somewhat long but potentially entertaining. perhaps y'all will even find some song material therein... >_<

Sounds like you had an interesting weekend! You'll have to fill us in. Get to feeling better!

Hi Chris,

Just wanted to let you know that I (and probably many others) really appreciate the inside look you're giving us.

I just purchased Take a Chance from Amazon and it has been on repeat for the past 3 days...

Carrie said...

I hope people don't take that explaining why you called your demos crappy the wrong way because when you first said so a blog or two ago, we call called you out for it. It's impressive, to me because you DID do it all on your own. That's something I've always taken in to account when you put them up for us to hear.

I know a regular cold lasts 10+ days or so and traveling a lot probably isn't helping but GET SOME SLEEP!!

Sorry to post again but my grandpa was just admitted to the hospital again. Things are... really not good right now and I'm trying really hard not to cry so... deep breaths. I'm on my way to go see him now.

To Chris Sligh,
From GDA,

Just because something wasn't specificly recorded for intended release doesn't mean it shouldn't be considered for released.

Doris Troy's hit "just One Look" was recorded as publishers demo.

Grahman Parker on his "Howling Wind" a;bum included a track that was recorded as demo but was used as they never got a take that matched the feel of the demo.

Al Kooper on his album "Rekooperation" included a version of Robert Palmer's "Looking for Clues" that he recorded at home for his own amusement.

Cathy Storms said...

Chris~You are having such an awesome time. The band really sounds amazing. Plus having your brother there with you is a plus.
I can't wait for the CD to come out.
Take care of your cold. Everyone here at my house has had it or has it or is coming down with it. It pretty much sucks..So get some Airborne like Risa suggested. It really does work.

Blake is going to be on Ellen tomorrow and performing from his new CD. My Tevo is set.....

Carrie~sorry to hear about your grandpa.

Great to hear you have such an awesome ensemble working with you in the studio!

So I've visited here before - but never posted - I used to live in Pensacola and I used to go to a singles ministry at Marcus Pointe. Small world.

Oh, my gosh. The thought that someone else (even Phil, who I like a lot!) getting "In a Moment" makes me queasy! I LOVE that song. Now, you're making me nervous talking about the arrangement. I'm going to take it on faith that it's going to be even better, though I sure do love it as is!

Now I'm thinking you needed a box of oranges! Take care of yourself, Mr. Sligh!! Risa

Hey, I'm going to hijack the blog for one minute to let you know about a resource available in Little Rock, AR that might be valuable to one of your family members or friends who deals with any form of blindness. Blindness strikes many families, especially age related macular degeneration or blindness caused by diabetes. I was asked to attend a luncheon and tour yesterday at Lion's World Services for the Blind. It is totally unique in that they provide training in personal care and living, but also vocational training for folks who are newly blind or have been blind but have never had the training to help them live independent lives. For example, they have a program in conjunction with the IRS that trains the folks that talk to you when you call them with questions and they provide Microsoft training that enables a grad to become the IT person at any company. To let you know how unique they are, they have a client right now who was an Iraqi orthopedic surgeon who was blinded in a missile attack when he was caught between factions. All states have departments that provide services for the blind and they are often referred to Lions World in Little Rock. So save their website...www.lwsb.org in case someone you know might need their services in the future. They are in my own backyard and I didn't realize the scope of what they provide.

Great pics, Amanda! Risa

Hey Dude -

I trust your instincts - but hard to imagine a different version of "In a Moment" with drum loops and "rocking" - and quite frankly am amazed to hear the HPF version was basically a glossed over demo. Sometimes the best songs are in their simplest forms - just hope this doesn't get "overproduced". One of my favorite secular bands during the 90's was Oasis - who basically blew up their career stateside when they went nuts in the studio for their third album, and added so many bells and whistles they lost what made them sound so good on their first two albums.
"In a Moment" was certainly one of the highlights from TACOSB - and I think a song with tremendous potential for CCM radio. Looking forward to hear what you do with it.

HstryQT said...

Oh my gosh what a cool tidbit to know that In a Moment was written originally for Phil to use! I'm glad you were convinced to keep it; but interesting nonetheless! I guess I didn't ever realize that some of your HPF songs were written well into your Idol experience, I just assumed they were all done beforehand.

DJ in AL said...

Hey Chris!

Sorry to hear you're not feeling well, you have got to take better care of yourself!

Like Lori, I was surprised that IAM was written during Idol. I am so glad you decided to hang on to it. I love Phil, but I just can't stand the idea of you giving that song to anyone else. It screams Sligh to me!

Sending you love from DJ in AL!

gdahimself said...

To Chris Sligh,
From GDA,

Risking belaboring a point on using "demoes" for release...

When Phil Spector had the Ronettes add their vocal to "Walking In The Rain", it was one take, which they thought it was rehearse.

Carl Perkins hit "Blue Suede Shoes" was the first ever recording of the song, which he meant to be a demo.

So evaluate the performance and be a little less critical of minor technical flaws

Cathy Storms said...

I am also surprised about In A Moment. No one else should sing that song but you. Like DJ says, It has Sligh written all over it.

So, does anyone else watch "The Hills"? I know, it is really a no brainer show, but they played Jordins song "Tatoo" on it last night. I thought that was really cool.

gdahimself said...

To All,
From GDA,

While we are all in agreement that Chris' performance of "In A Moment" is great and probably the definitive version, let's be a less judgemental about Phil Stacy's ability to sing it until there is a performance or a recording available to critique.

He could still surprise us with his take on the song, which could be different but equally effective.

gdahimself said...

To Tom in ATL,
From GDA,

Out of curiousity, did you every hear the forth album by Oasis?
I am not a fan but was wondering if the following album showed if they learned anything from the experience of making album no. three.

Blake was great on Ellen today. It's so nice to see him and Jordin out making their own music. Can't wait to see yours out too.

DJ in AL said...

GDA,

Just to set the record straight. My reason for wanting Chris to hang on to IAM has nothing to do with Phil's singing ablility or what he might do or not do for the song. I think Phil has a fine voice and would do the song justice.

Just for me personally, the song screams Chris Sligh. I'm sure if I had heard Phil sing it first I might feel differently, but as they say, you can't unring that bell.

Tom in ATL said...

GDA -

Actually Oasis albums have gotten progressively worse since their third album - they did tone down the feedback, drum loops, and hyper production that led to heavy criticism of "Be Here Now"- I just think the songs aren't as good now.

Back in 1994 to 1997 - they were the definitive British Rock group and were often compared to the Beatles. Their Debut album was the biggest selling Debut album of all time in Britain. Their second album is still the 2nd biggest selling album in UK ever (right behind Sgt. Pepper's). Then their third album pretty much made all those Beatle comparison's look silly.

Their music is nothing like Chris's - and they are about the furthest thing from CCM material as you can get - but for a short while - they were a really great Rock band.

Peace -

Haha Cathy I did notice that they played Tattoo on The Hills last night. I admit, The Hills is one of my secret indulgences. But alas, the idols were left out. That's ok though.

I find that people who tend to have an issue with Chris just don't take the time to get to know all of what he's about. They take what they read over the internet and twist it into something to make him sound like he's someone he isn't. From obvious personal experience, I can see that most of what that certain forum is saying is 100% false. It's sad that they have nothing better to do than waste their time on negativity. Chris has never once spoken badly about Blake. Ever. I can understand people may have their disagreements about contestants from a television show but to come and spam someone's blog with false information and threats is crossing a line.

Someone who's music has and current is helping me get through what may be the future loss of my grandfather and KNOWS about it wouldn't be talking badly about people who he's friends with. Chris barely even knows me outside of the blog and yet I feel a certain level of trust I haven't really experienced with other people who have been on Idol.

I guess I just don't understand why people have the need to take everything someone says and turn it into something it isn't. Chris has NEVER been a jerk to me nor have I seem him to mean to anyone who didn't once provoke him first. Everyone around here knows how hard it is for me to bite my tongue and not want to fight back, but it's obvious that there's no winning. Those who have so much hate inside of themselves are missing out. It's a shame.

Please, please, there are so many more important things in life to be doing. Go to www.freerice.com. Use your time donating food to the hungry. Enhance your vocabulary. Go read a book. Something. Anything that doesn't involve putting down another living, breathing human being.

julie said...

Carrie, that was very well put.

But Dan - for all his rambling, village idiot glory - does serve a purpose - no, scratch that - he really doesn't.

Chris is probably a little too busy to respond to you Dan, he's in the studio making a album, not trolling the internet for percieved slights against your hero. Why not go tack up a picture of Scott Baio or Hanson in your cell and call it a day.

Dan, I post here and I post one place else. If I were "famewhoring" I'd be doing a lot more while I work on my album. Blake stated his goals...I said that I thought his goals were attainable. Call me what you will, but Blake said it...I just mentioned it in passing (you'll notice that the subject of the post was something totally different). Again, I respect your fervor, but it is completely misguided.

You're right Blake and I talked once...I never claimed any different...because both of us are extremely busy. Who cares? I never claimed Blake and I were best friends...I said we were friends. Notice he did not mention 6 other people who were on tour...I was mentioned...do you get that there is an actual friendship there. I am all about getting Blake to his goals...I will help him try to reach 5 million if possible through whatever I can do, but as a Z-list celebrity (again, I never claimed anything more) there's only so much I can do with letting my "10 buddies" know about the album and the single.

Seriously...get a life.

ChrisSligh said...

Dan,

I'm just baffled to figure out how I have remotely sabatoged Blake. On the bus during tour, Blake told me his goals, as I told him my goals. I just can't figure out why having high goals is bad...as a Blake fan do you want his goal to be gold when it's obvious he should be very successful. My goal is to sell gold...if I don't reach that I'm still going to be satisfied with making a record I love. It doesn't matter that I didn't sell my goal. Frankly I'm a little offended for Blake that you and his "fans" wouldn't be encouraged by such an aggresive goal. As I said I'd rather my fav artists shoot for the stars than be satisfied with mediocrity.

So again I'd hardly call me saying Blake's goals trying to sabatoge him.

To Dan & All,
From GDA,

For some of us Blake Lewis is a non-issue.
He simply exist in another sphere that we don't share. That doesn't mean we have anything against or for Blake.

At some future time we may discover something that will attract our interest, that may survive the unpleasant association you have created by claiming you are one of his fans.

Are you able to make a case for him as performer or singer without leaving the topic to drop insults, cast accusations or bad mouth other people while doing so?
If so we are willing to read your post and possibly express agreement or disagreement.
Disagreement doesn't mean anyone is tearing him down.

Entertainment is board field that is throughly subjective to peoples preference. Disagreement is to be expected from all at sometime.

If you have a problem with something said by anyone, challenge it at the point occurance don't be dragging to other places. It's dishonest.

Carrie said...

Dan, I honestly have nothing against you as a person and I am sure that outside of this hate you must be somewhat tolerable. Who knows, really. But please do not accuse me of lying because I don't. Hmm. Maybe it's a coincidence and if it is, then I apologize. Anyway, I'm not about to make a screen cap of my conversation because I know it to be true. If there were more than one person not believing me, then I would do it. However, you are just one person trying to tear me down and therefore I do not take stock in a single thing you say. I adore Blake. There is no reason I would want to talk badly about him. But this isn't a place to discuss Blake. Blake has nothing to "forgive" Chris for. They're friends.

Do you know Blake?

Just curious where you get all your information.

Thanks -

Tom in ATL

Are you saying you know him - or not? Have you ever spoken to him?

Nothing sinister in my questions - you just seem to take things so personally regarding him was wondering if you are freinds or something.

Tom,

He's just trying to mess with you. Obviously he never has.

Tom in ATL said...

It's really a simple question -
Do you or do you not personally know Blake Lewis?

Seems to me you're avoiding the question.

Tom in ATL said...

So if you don't know Blake - where do you get your information from?

This will be fun.

Tom in ATL said...

Come on Dan - think of something snappy and clever.

Hey Chris~I just read that Graham Colton was voted best new pop artist by i-tunes for 2007. That is so cool.
I really like his new album. Not crazy about every song, but a few of them just might make it to "Cigarette"...It's so good to see he is on his way. If you ever get a chance to see him in concert go..He really does put on a really good show.

What is incoherent about a direct question?

I'd like to know where you get your information from - so we can assess the validity of your claims.

Whatever happened to Chris asking us to ignore Dan?

I am extremely extremely disappointed by the more mature posters here. Come on guys. Really. JUST STOP.

I'm in fact choosing to not post anymore until there's a full day of non-negativity. That won't happen until the negative posters are ignored. So, have fun guys. Hopefully some Christmas cheer will spread sooner rather than later.

I'm not even talking to him anymore. I'm apparently a "liar" so what good would it do? I only came back to post something I had for everyone else and of course, got attacked. Honestly if this doesn't end I'm not going to be coming back here.

Dan,

Serious question.
Did go through all this at the place where the alledged transgression took place?

You know that without reading the actual item, it sounds like wild claims with no basis. Without that information you're not exactly going garner immediate support or toleration.

Where precisely did the offending posting take place?

Please supply the url

Until, at least, I read it, you are going to continue to sound like here strictly to rattle the cage and slander Chris.

Lori,

Apparently the Oscar Wilde quote applies:

"I can resist everything but temptation"

Mein Schmerz

Lori,

If people want to insult Chris, I've come to learn that while it annoys me, there really isn't much I can do about it. It's his own battle to deal with whatever way he would like. But when someone insults me, then it's personal. And I've been holding back here, trust me.

gdahimself said...

Dan,

Any chance you will actual post the url of the item you keep referring to?

Look, Dan, please just go away okay? I'm on edge, my grandpa is practically dying and I can't deal with this. I'm glad you get off hurting a bunch of people. You're such a winner.

To Dan,
From GDA,

I've not found it so far, but I don't go there often and may be missing it.
Will need to give more time later.

A more focus directions like a page number would help.

Like I said Dude - to each his own. Knock yourself out if that's what you enjoy doing.

Chris, I'm sorry is I had disappointed you. My head isn't on straight now. I feel kinda bad for not only probably contributing to the mess (though I tried not to respond unless I had something that I thought would at least ease the tension) but also because you have so many you had to delete. I'm no longer responding to Dan and I hope everyone else does the same. There is no winning.

I wish there was something else I could do the help. I feel helpless and absolutely awful.

Carrie said...

Chris maybe you should just moderate comments for awhile.... we'd all understand. hugs for you okay :(

rosalee said...

Carrie -

They are being moderated now, and not by Chris, so if he thinks he's been jerking Chris around he's going to be disappointed....
Dan has attempted to post about 2 dozen times in the last hour or so, so PLEASE EVERYONE - IGNORE HIM!!!!!!

Rosalee,

Good to hear! I hope you're doing okay.
