The equipment

Hey, I thought for the guitar lovers out there, I'd post some of the equipment I got to use as George Cocchini as the "Tone Chaperone". Basically, George brought over a bunch of stuff for me to use. And it is awesome. I probably got to play on about $50,000 worth of equipment.

I now feel dirty and ashamed for the amorous feeling I had while reading this list. You had me at Les Paul...

I still want to know what a Tradition Les Paul is...

There is a very good book out called "Beatles Gear" by Andy Babiuk. I bought it for my husband. My next door neighbor was also raving about it. It's supposed to be very enjoyable and a very good read about the Beatles' equipment:

Looks like blogger has changed a little bit, that's cool. I'm not sure how I feel about the whole "paid membership" to access parts of your site, but um... I guess I'd have to find some way to do it. :\ I don't know. I'm just kinda meh about that, but I can understand why it needs to be done.

Those are a lot of guitars.

Considering I don't know what 95% of all that is.. I'll say one word, cool :P

I read on the blog below that we'll be making a move which is fine with me. The little paid section sounds like it'll be pretty cool.

Off to bed.

woah. You had me at the SG.

Yeah, I made the mistake of going in the "vault" at guitar center one day... they had an SG... 3 hours later....

lol... what fun! I bet you were like a kid in a candy store!

I cant even begin to imagine what it would be like to play all those guitars...You are a true Guitar Hero...lol...

Hey Chris,

You mentioned that you used a 15-watt Crate amp. Is it one of those new Class A V16 Palomino amps? I am thinking about getting one.

Cathy Storms said...

Wow..That is impressive.

ChrisSligh said...

Bo,

It's not one of those...my amp is about 10 years old. However, as someone who is a tone nerd, I can say almost every tube amp I've played from Crate has sounded really, really great...so if it's in your price range, I will almost guarantee you will get more bang for you buck than just about anything else.

Fascinating inside look, Chris. Plus a little drama to boot ;)

Thanks for sharing,

Chris,

Do you find tube amps have a warmer sound?

What happened to my post from last night???

I still want to know, what's a Tradition Les Paul? A Les Paul Standard or Les Paul knock-off?

There's a wonderful book out called Beatles Gear by Andy Babiuk, which discusses all of their equipment. I gave a copy to my husband and my neighbor raves about this book:

http://www.beatlesfabgear.com/

(there are some links on the site (to Amazon.com) where you can search inside the book)

Also this online site below is only partially done, dealing only with the Beatles amplifiers at the moment, but they promise to add their instruments in the future:

Rosalee,

Tradition is a guitar company. They make a Les Paul rip-off (the technical title of the guitar is an S2000). I have owned Epiphone & Gibson Les Pauls and the Tradition is the best playing Les Paul I've ever played. It's amazing. I'm looking forward to getting a Gibson Les Paul Custom and I'm sure it will overake the Tradition...but until then the Tradition makes me happy.

However, the Gibson Les Paul I played on tour is a great, great guitar. I have a feeling when I go out in April on the headlining tour, that I will take the Tradition, the Les Paul and my Strat going through my AC-30.

To All,
From GDA,

Les Paul, I wonder what he’s up to? Lives or lived in Mahwah which is about 30 - 40 minutes way. Sometimes the Star Ledger would have articles when he was scheduled to somewhere in Northern N J. or NYC.

For the benefit of those who don’t really know name. He is a guitarist who in problem solving invented and keeps improving the solid body electric guitar and pioneered various recording methods that continually pushed the boundaries of sound recording.

He and Chet Atkins, another guitarist of repute and A & R man for RCA did a couple great albums in the 70’s. The first was entitled “Chester & Lester” (RCA)

For fuller background read the following articles.
A very short bio at The Gibson Guitar Corp* site: http://www.gibson.com/products/gibson/Stories/LesPaul.html
The Rock and Roll Journal profile from 2005, “LES PAUL: LESSONS OF A LEGEND, Guitarist Releases Rock CD at Age 90“: http://www.lespaulbiography.com/

iTunes Digital Release available as of this past Tuesday:
John Lennon - Video Album, Starbucks entertainment/Hear Music
Details: http://www.hearmusic.com/#STARBUCKS_|_ITUNES/JOHN_LENNON
Buying items as a download isn’t my favored way to buy anything. I guess I’m still attached to actually having something physically in hand when I by recorded entertainment.

Blogger question:
Between the at time and the blogger name there is a box, inside an “x” and blogger, that isn’t displaying some piece of information. What is the “x” a stand in for?

* by the way, their mailing address is in Nashville

Chris~If I wanted to get my son a good but now to expensive Acoustic Guitar for Christmas, which one would you suggest? He has quite a few electric guitars but I would like to get him an acoustic. He's been playing guitar since he was 10, he's now 25 so he's actually quite good.
Any ideas?

Well, you know I don't know diddly squat about any of this equipment, but it sounds really cool!

Chris, no matter what you have to say, I do enjoy reading your blogs. I feel so exhausted after reading about your day at the studio - lol. You are one busy, busy guy, and it's a wonderful busy too.

I'm so looking forward to the new cd.

Cathy -

Can you be more specific about the price range you are thinking about for that acoustic guitar? They can range anywhere from $200 - $3000 and up. Even within one guitar maker there is a wide range of models and prices.

Also, you should bring your son to the store to try them out. Even for the same model guitar, each will feel differently, since each is individually made.

Well, it's 11:30 and we're heading back from my son's first little gig. I thought about you Chris and wondered if you ever played any little venues like this one. It was a little building a church had set up for their youth and they had a stage and had invested in some sound equipment. There were just a handful of people. Most of their college friends had already headed home for Christmas. While hiphop is not my thing, I was very proud of him. He overcame a drug problem with the help of the Lord and a good woman who's now his wife, and he has written a lot of that experience in his lyrics, giving all the glory to God..Some of that is hard for me to hear--like many parents we buried our heads in the sand for a long time.. Anyway, he's very active in campus ministry and heads up a Bridge Group that reaches out to addicts. The music, for him, is another vehicle to reach out to others. I hope y'all will forgive a proud mama's ramblings.

Rosalee~Thanks for the advice about the guitar. I have been checking around and you are right about there being so many to choose from. If I can catch my son long enough for him to go shopping with me I think that is the way to go.
Risa~How cool about your son. I bet you were so proud. My daughter put on a Christian concert at our church when she was a teenager. She didn't perform, but she got all the bands to play at it. Would you believe she even had Switchfoot there. It was a long time ago. I just remember watching all those kids praying together and it was amazaing.
