How to deal with celebrities

All right, so as a semi-F-list celebrity, I get recognized and mobbed a lot by people. Here in Greenville I can't really go anywhere without getting mobbed. Because of my experience as the "celebrity", I have come up with some rules that you should put to good use, are you to ever actually meet a celebrity. Like for instance, when/if I meet Dustin Diamond (Screech), I will put these rules into action.

(I decided to not focus on the negative btw, so the wall of shame is no longer)

#1 - Do NOT ask for an autograph while the celebrity is eating the following items: Baby Back Ribs, Buffalo Wings, Fried Chicken, Pizza, or anything where they use their hands to eat. Seriously, it's tough to have to wipe your hands 10 times during a meal to sign autographs. I'm really anal about my hands being messy so restaurants never give me enough napkins anyway. If I have to sign autographs, I make sure not to leave a rib juice mark underneath my sig. If you must ask for an autograph, how about bringing over a bunch of napkins for the celebrity? Actually...go ahead and ask for the autograph but bring napkins. Well...no, wait till they're done eating. Crap. Never mind....just do what you want.

#2 - If you want to take a picture with a celebrity, and they are eating something messy, make sure to let the celebrity know if they have something in their teeth or buffalo hot sauce ringing their mouth. Believe me, the celebrity doesn't want a picture on your myspace page that makes him look like a crappy eater. Crap. Hey, I like messy foods. What can I say?

#3 - If you ask a celebrity for an autograph, please at least know their name. If you don't know their name, then they probably aren't famous enough to deserve you asking them for an autograph. For instance, I have people all the time walk up to me and say, "Aren't you the American Idol guy?" To which I usually reply, "Yes I am the team mascot! Do you want to rub my belly for good luck? Go team!!!" And then I run off. If you don't know my name, don't ask for my autograph, because my autograph is unreadable and you'll never know how to prove you met me to your friends if you don't even know my name.

#4 - If you want to take a picture with a celebrity, please have your camera ready. We all roll our eyes when our mothers try to take our picture and can't get the digital camera to work. It's no different for celebrities. We don't want to sit uncomfortably with our arms around someone we don't know personally while the photo taker takes 7 minutes to figure out he's taking video of you and the celebrity with their arms uncomfortably around each other. And for goodness sake, save the freaking picture to your phone if you take it on your phone! Just hit save! I know you're excited, but rational thinking saves lives!

#5 - Finally, don't feel as though you have to tell a celebrity your life story. It's not that they don't care, but they don't care. I meet hundreds of people, literally, a week. I'm sure that most celebrities meet even more than I do. We are glad to meet our fans. We love to sign an autograph. We love to sign 5 autographs. We love to hear that why you love us. It boosts our ego. However, when I'm walking through the mall or trying to have dinner with friends or my wife, I honestly don't have time to hear you story of what you've always dreamed of and how I can help you get there. Now, I should note, that I have set up this blog to have a little different vibe than real life...here I have time to sit and think. In fact I've gotten to meet some of the posters and it's nice to have a connection. But honestly, when I'm walking through a mall, it's not the time to give me your life story. I promise I won't remember. I'm a reader. I memorize and remember by reading. So, save your breath and save the celebrity's time: tell them what you like about the music or the movie then let them go on.

NOTE: In case you didn't get it, there's a bit of sarcasm mixed in here...maybe a lot of sarcasm.

Ok Chris, #3 and #4 literally killed me. I was waiting for a blog like this! Awesome! Thanks for making me smile.

PS: On a smilar note, I've often wondered how someone adjusts into public life - as in a reality TV situation which goes from 0 - 100 instantly. If you're able to discuss this, how did they semi-prepare you for fame on AI, or were you completely thrown in?

I love you so much right now.

I expect to meet you on tour otherwise I might blog about how much you suck. ;)

Also every time you mention the word Buffalo I am like, sup, shout out to me!~ Because I live in Buffalo. And yet the closest the tour is coming to here is Rochester. (Hour away.) What is up with that!

Really? Some fans tell their life story? Ridiculously funny! LOL

Don't worry, if/when I meet you, I won't. :)

Have a great evening.

Man, I can't tell you how annoying it is when hot girls come and mob me while I'm eating corn-on-the-cob. I wanna eat in peace dangit! But what can I say? I'm just so dang lovable!
I feel for you brother!

Dear Jack -

I am asked for my autograph too - like dozens of time a day. And it's very annoying.

Of course it's just my wife with the checkbook - but I feel your pain.

Speaking of Celebrities -

I got a call on my birthday from Ron Pallio - who paved the way for such acting legends as Screech. He was "Horshack" on Welcome Back, Kotter. And for $19.95 - he'll call you too. So you always got that to fall back on, if you know, the singing, song writing, and novel thing doesn't work out.

Peace -

Anything that requires lots of napkins is probably not weight loss material. Green salads require one napkin only. Then due to starvation you eat that also. Healthy and enviromental.

Remember little Lees Summit from your time in Missouri? Its a lot bigger now. I am just a little 'ole plumber and I can't go anywhere around here without being recognized by somebody. It must get really nuts for celebs. It is easy to have empathy for you even though we have no idea. I'll bet it is never ending. We all have different moods and if we can't share our real ...in the moment feelings..... it won't before long you would go nuts. Life is too short to fake it. I like how you try your best to set the record straight but your fame is going to continue to grow so don't try so hard to answer everything. You flat out don't have the time and you don't have to answer to every little thing. We know better than to listen to the silly stuff. When you play the Idol show at the MO state fair my family will be there to root you on. No one needs your autograph....we need your music. That will get us through the day.

Sometimes my husband will say something and when I get annoyed he we say, "It was a joke, It was supposed to be funny" and I will say, "If you have to explain it, it isnt a joke and it isnt funny." then we both laugh.

I was going to tell you, you really dont have to explain it is sacrasm and then I read the AI forum for you and realize you do, (that was a joke) lol

okay..I'm rolling on the ground laughing....You crack me up!!!! So I guess that means when I meet you I can't show you my photo album full of my grandkids..lol

Chris next time someone asked you for an autograph and doesn't know your name, just sign it with a different name like Brad Pitt or something. You are an excellent writer Chris, You know that chicken soup will have a book coming out in January. It's chicken soup for the American Idol soul. Maybe you can write them something. Good luck with your weight Loss. I know it isn't easy but you can do it. Hang in there, Chris. Sathe29@aol.com

risalea said...

Ok, here you go...the answer to your weight loss dilemma and to having to sign autographs in restaurants...no more ribs except at home! LOL

I guess being a celebrity is a two sided coin. Being able to go through Wal-Mart without being hounded may be over, yet when they quit asking for your John Henry, well, that's not good, either. It sounds like you've got a sense of humor about it though. Just remember, you will meet thousands of fans, but when that one fan is meeting you that one time, it's special and important to him/her.

Have fun with your fans this summer! How great to be able to meet them all over the country!

Great advice!!!

It took me a couple weeks to finally figure this out for my own (no more crying on your shoulder about AI) you don’t want to hear it and I’m imposing to do so unless it is directly related to your post.

Seriously, to ask anyone for autographs/pictures while their eating is just plain rude. (wait to tackle them in the parking lot... just kidding!)

Actually, I have traveled a lot!!! in my life... met celebrities many times at airports, as a movie extra, etc. and the only autographs I have are ones from official signing sessions!

Folks... Their real people... leave them alone unless they ask/motion/or start the conversation... than all rules of courtesy are off :-)

Christi said...

ROFL!!! This is a very helpful guide. I'll be sure to take it all into consideration if I'm ever to meet someone famous. Although I would probably be to nervous to even ASK for an autograph or picture XD
Unfortunately not many celebrities come down to Louisiana. I was so upset the AI tour locations weren't anywheres near me... I'm not going to be able to attend any of them.
hey-- one day when you and YOUR band goes on tour... make SURE you come down to LA ;)

Scott Heine said...

Alright, Chris. Let me just say it here so I can avoid any weird, distracting conversation should you find yourself sitting next to me on a plane or something. "I love ya, man." Seriously. Thanks for sharing your music, and thanks especially for thinking aloud with us here on your blog. I promise that I'll never make you take a long, drawn out, embarrassing photo that can be sold to the tabloids, and I'll never ask you to sign a napkin to "Uncle Scooter, my greatest fan, with all my love." (But if you've got a moment, I'd like to tell you my life story and pitch this idea for becoming famous...)

Anonymous said...

Chris, you are funny - very very funny. I was just thinking if I did meet you when you roll in the BOOMING (ha) city of Rochester that I would take the time to tell you how much I liked you on the show, as well as my 7 year old and 3 year old too. And the time when my 3 year old saw a curly haired guy at church and loudly proclaimed "MOMMY, CHRIS SLIGH IS HERE", and when I said no, honey that's not him, she cried..... but now I won't because I certainly don't want to be an ANNOYING FAN! :) hee hee
Best of luck to you! You are funny, talented, cool - and you deserve much success. Good luck!!!!
A Mom of 3, and a big fan in Rochester! :)

Hey Carl..er cameron....er charles...American Idol guy,

Did you know that when I was a little girl I always wanted to have my hair really curly and tons of it? Well, here's how you can help me get there...lol

Oh and, since you're "connected" with AI and all, can you set me up with the "Thank You" guy on the american Idol voting system? We kind of have a thing going. I called him about 1200 times Tuesday night. We either need to get married or look into restraining orders and stalker law.

Here's some ribs..can I have your autograph?

This was cute. Love your sense of humor.

OMG I'm dying here...I honestly laughed out loud while reading this. I really do hope you finish that book because I'd love to read it! So many gifts you have...I'm jealous!

people actually tell you their life story? why do they think you would care? to be honest, I think im the type of person that would just leave the celebrity alone. whenever i hear stories about people meeting celebrities, it always sounds like one big awkward moment.

question: have you ever been to a mutemath concert? i went to one and it basically changed my life.

oh - and do you watch The Office?

Some of your fans are as funny as you are!

I feel for you, brother. I make a living as a writer (but not the famous kind!), and I've had people want to tell me this great idea that they have for a book, or ask me how they can get published -- basically asking me to help make their dreams come true (such as writing the book for them). I listen and nod and then hope to never run into them again!

But hey, if you ever need help writing educational materials for schools, I'm your girl! ;-)

I think people tend to forget that celebrities are people too, they deserve every dignity that anyone else would get.

Stupid public...
some sarcasm, some...

well then I'll remember if I ever see you in public to not approach you...

I can understand how it's annoying to be asked for autographs at the most inconvenient times though.

ive met celebrities and had to have them wait for me to get my camera on b/c the battery was just about dead, and if i left it on long enough to ask for a picture, it would've shut off on us anyway so we had to turn it on right before we snapped the picture.
Hope they didn't mind too much.

I can imagine being on American Idol brings you the kind of fans who are just obnoxious however.
I've read the AI boards and thought "hm, wow" quite a few times.
They're quite enthusiastic a lot of them in ways I've never seen fans be about artists before.
Guess that comes along with being the most watched tv show in America...or I believe I've heard it was at least.

Ronni Hall said...

Sarcasm is my 2nd language!

You forgot a rule...

When asking for an autograph, make sure you don't have a pen, or anything to write on. Heck, offer up a body part to sign and use ketchup!

Geesh.

LOL

Seriously. I just leave celebrities alone. I might introduce myself if I met you, but well, other than that, unless you are jamming with me and we gotta tune up, you won't hear from me. Your a dude. I'm a dudette. We are all the same. *shrug*

I never "got" the celebrity thing. Why do I check out your blog? Seriously? I found you on myspace a while back... loved your music. Fell over when you ended up on AI, and well, your the kind of guy (I think) that I'd hang out with, coerce into lazer tag and stay up all night at BW3's (think wings)just talking and having some cool conversations.

lol. oh well. nite. I just played for 5 hours straight and have blisters so I need sleep.

Can I have your autograph? *ducks*

some people seem to have no consideration, when a famous person goes out they have a right to the SAME respect and privacy as anyone else , i found the out first hand,i happen to work @a dept store the other day,a local celebrity. (a investagative reporter @ a local tv station,)she was in the fitting room where i was working . she handed me the items that she was not goning to buy, i noticed who she was . and i was ABOUT to say something , then thought better of it , she had as much a right to not be harrassed as i did if i was in her place. but SOME people don't get it. i treat people the way i want to be treated. but would not have the nerve to approach , cus i would be to nervious.and would figure you would want your personal space voliated. i know i wouldn't want mine to be.

I wonder how you react when women that you don't know flirt with you or speak to you in very familar terms. You're a pretty charming and personable guy, so I can imagine that your tendency might be to be friendly and indulge their imagined connection to you just a little. Do you have rules for yourself when it comes to being friendly vs. respecting your wife? I'm sure your wife trusts you, but does it ever bug her when she's around or when she hears about the attention that you receive?

Toni said...

Thanks for the tips, Chris. I promise if I ever run into any celebrities (F-list or otherwise), I will keep them all in mind. Or more probably, I will forget everything, including my own name.

I've actually "met" very few celebrities, which you will realize is a good thing when I relate the last time that happened. Every year my friends and I go to the AI concert (so hopefully I will meet you there and can tell you my life story). *giggle*

Anyway, a couple of years ago we were waiting out by the buses before the show (no I am not a stalker, more like a groupie) and Constantine came out and took some pics and signed autographs. Instead of walking calmly up to him to get my pic and autograph like the mature adult I appear to be, what did I do? I stood about 10 feet away, with my mouth hanging open, unable to articulate at all. I then managed to dump the entire contents of my purse into the street while attempting to get to my camera, while also somehow causing the camera batteries to roll away from me to their final resting place under the bus.

It was a great time. At least you'll recognize me now when you see me.

Haha, this is cute!!! I always try to remind myself to stay cool and calm when I meet a celebrity. Some times have been easier for others. He was very sweet and told us we could if we didn't make a scene or call attention to him. Looking back, he probably thought we were crazy but hey, we were 14 years old! lol

I love to sign autographs and take pictures...it's one of my favorite parts of the whole thing, honestly. A lot of people get the humor here, some don't...that's okay. But I was kidding around here.

Anyway, hope that helps.

Peace and love,
Chris
