Yesterday * Today

Yesterday, I had a writing session with a guy named Jason Walker. I was a little worried because I had never heard any of his songwriting and was worried that we wouldn't hit it off. My fears were quickly relieved, however. Yesterday was a great, great day.

Jason is a mainstream artist who happens to be signed to Word publishing. He is seeing some pretty good success with getting some stuff into tv and film stuff, even though he's not signed to a label. We started off by listening to some music then moved into writing. Jason is a piano guy, and a great, great piano guy, so he had a couple of ideas that we screwed around with. The first one was an upbeat piano rocker. We worked on a lyric for a while and just didn't find anything we loved. We went to lunch and hung out for a while, then decided to go lay down tracks for both of the songs at my house.

We drove to my place where we layed down the basic tracks for both songs, then we hung out a little while and just talked. We ended up really starting to develop a friendship so that was really great.

Go check out his myspace/jasonwalkeronline. He's got some stuff up there and it's great. It looks like for my Spring tours that Jason will be going along as my keyboard player and will be opening up for me. So, if that works out, that's gonna be awesome.

That night, Phil, Kendra and the kids and Haley came over for dinner. My wife made an incredible dinner for us - seriously she outdid herself. We had a great time just hanging out and enjoying each other's company. It's funny how these people who I didn't even know a year ago have become like family.

After dinner, I went up to my studio and worked on the lyric for the first song with Jason. And I think I wrote one of the best, if not the best lyrics I've ever written. It was one of those that just happened really quickly and just felt great. I emailed it to several people involved with the project and several songwriting friends and the response was incredible...the song is called "I'm Clean" and it will definitely be on the record and is being discussed as the first single.

This morning I headed over to Brown's house to discuss more intense stuff with the record. We sat down and listened to the 13 songs and he threw a couple of other songs back onto the table for discussion. We talked through production ideas and how the record will flow with having 3 producers and how to make all that work. We talked about different production ideas, also, in the sense of how to take each of my songs and make the feel different from each other and for the album to take the listener on a journer for that 40 minutes they are listening. It was a great, great conversation.

One exciting note from the Brown meeting was that he told me that apparently word had gotten around town that I was working with him, and he'd received calls from a few songwriters wanting to write with me. Haha...it's so fun being able to write and be a musician for a living.

Then I went over and wrote with a guy named Ian Eskilin. I was toast from the last couple of days and I'm starting to come down with some kind of sickness...so we didn't end up writing a song, but we have a couple of killer ideas that we're gonna get together in the next couple of weeks to flesh out.

Finally, tonight, Sarah and I went with Phil and Kendra to a big fundraiser for Rocketown, which is a teen center here in Nashville that Michael W. Smith founded and helps support. It is a concert venue (Elliot Yamin played here when he came to town), a cafe and a skate park all combined. It's pretty freaking awesome. I think I'm gonna go start skating...I'll be the loser old dude trying to rekindly his love for skating.

Anyway, Ronnie Milsap played and he blew my socks off...he did a medley of several hit songs and it truly was remarkable. And Smitty debuted an instrumental piano piece he wrote. So, it was great night all in all.

Tomorrow I meet with Brown again in the morning and then head over to write with a guy named Clint Lagerberg. Clint and I met the other day when I was writing with Jason and hit it off really well...so that'll be great fun, I think. Then at 7pm I'll be taping an interview with Way FM's syndicated show "Total Axxess"...I'll find out when it's playing and let you guys know. Then after that I have a photo shoot. So tomorrow is a long day. But I'm thinking it's gonna be a great day.

I'd be excited to hear "I'm Clean" or at least see what the lyrics are if you ever put them up because while "Empty Me" isn't bad it isn't one of my favorites from you. I guess knowing there might be another potential single that you really like excites me.

Glad you're keeping busy, having a lot of fun and keeping in contact with people you've met from the show. I'm sure there was a lot more I could say and I know there was something else, but my head hurts so I need to step away from the computer screen.

PS; Don't get sick. I remember you saying that to me when you came here, so I have to return the favor haha. If you even remember that!

ChrisSligh said...

Oh yeah, I forgot...I'm also going to be meeting for lunch with the guy who will probably be my tour manager/bass player/band leader. So that's cool, too.

I have 5-6 meetings tomorrow. Then Thursday and Friday is with Brown pre-producing tracks.

fyi . . . the Total Axxess interview tomorrow night is live at 7:00p CT. It will also be replayed at 10:00p CT. totalaxxess.com has a nation-wide list of stations and highlights will be posted after the show.

Well, I just lost my post (I think), so if this ends up being a duplicate, delete one, Chris.

It is amazing what can happen in the course of a year. I think it's neat that several of you are close enough to visit, and even watch out for each other's families when one or the other of you is out on the road. And what a good husband you are, cause all good husbands compliment their wife's cooking!

What has surprised me is the variety of songwriters you've worked with. I think that's great because it challenges you more than if you were writing alone or with just one or two others and causes you to step out of your comfort zone. And that's usually when good stuff happens.

OK, off to another exciting day in a pre-k classroom! Later, folks! Risa

I have to add another "Don't get sick!" When I saw you in DC you told us you were starting to get sick, and it ended up being the whopper that stuck with you for awhile :(. So don't get sick! :)

It's great to hear about the fantastic week that you're in the middle of. I can't wait to hear "I'm Clean," especially because you're so excited about it! I'd LOVE to know what other songs you put back on the table that might make the record - is I'm Ready one of them?? :) You know there'll be a lot of happy campers if I'm Ready miraculously makes the record - Just sayin' :).

Isn't it fantastic having such great friends by your side as you begin your life in a new city? I'm glad you get to see Phil, Kendra and others often. During our big move we have been so thankful for being here with our friends that (thankfully) were relocated with us - we wouldn't survive without them! It doesn't need to be by blood - a family is a family; we're thankful for our Indy family as you're thankful for your Nashville Idol family :).

Good luck this week and don't work yourself TOO hard; drink lots of orange juice! :)

I don't have a WayFM station near me but I THINK you can hear it online at their site. So you're taping it tonight and is it live or was it taped earlier? I'm just horrible with timezones so I'm guessting 7 CT means 8 ET?

DJ in AL said...

Chris,

Well it certainly sounds like you are writing up a storm, can't wait to hear "I'm Clean".

Here's hoping you don't get sick. Sounds like you need to get a little more sleep dude.

Ok, so just so you know, I think it totally sucks that you have had to go back to editing. Why does one creep (I'd be embarrassed if I was Blake to know this person was a fan of mine) have to ruin what has always been a cool place for Sligh fans to gather? Ok, so that's all I'm gonna say about that.

Sending you healthy vibes and love from DJ in AL!

Wow! What a great couple of days! I am so happy for you! :-)
Getting to write, and hang out with other people like that...gosh, it almost makes me jealous. I haven't met another person in forever, who was deep enough to help build a divine fire in me.
I keep thinking how I should sit down and try to get the writing thing going again, write a poem and let the river start running again that way. I feel it, with all the fall colors, but I haven't tapped it in a long while.

Enjoy this wonderful time of creativity and bounty. You really deserve it. It's really exciting to watch things grow, in you.

ChrisSligh said...

I know it sucks, but hopefully it's just for a time, and I'll have my iPhone with me and will moderate comments as much as I can...I'm sorry one creep had to ruin it. What he doesn't get is that he's not just being a jerk to me...he's being a jerk to the couple hundred people who post here from time to time.

Oh, well...we'll get through it.

I'm off to start my busy day, so I don't know if I'll be able to post, but post away...I promise to get them up quickly.

Hello Chris,

Firstly, thank you for providing a vantage point to watch your progression unfold. Technical struture information is absorbing.

This blog has morphed from your posts before and through and past your AI experiences, into a community of contributors. It's a microcosm. Hearing your news aside, reading the comments is equally engaging. You seem to attract strong personalities.

Will I continue to tune in ? Yes. Will I create an account to comment here ? Unlikely. For reasons varied and unimportant. ( Although merciless teasing from my fella, my guy, were I to be 'outed' as a groupie does factor... :) )

Did I have a point ? Oh,yes.

It is abundantly apparent you are loved here, Chris. I'm not suggesting you should provide a forum for incoming abuse, and turn the other cheek. I do find it tedious and frustrating that you and other contributors so readily engage. That gives them such power! It then becomes the same movie.

I'm not sure it would escalate and dominate so were those comments simply posted and IGNORED. As GDA put it, ' drop the ice curtain of silence.

Who knows ? Would that work in time, or do detractors have extreme tenacity genes ?

Just thinking out loud. Carry on. Sounds like life is enormous fun, so am happy for you. Stay well.

Shalom

Hello Chris,

Again. Way too much time on here today...time well wasted. 2 clients cancelled, flu raging about, and can't contact afternoon others to reschedule = play time.

Was thinking about your blog beginnings so read some early posts. Loved Friday, July 28 th, 2006. Am sure it would make you ( + Dear Readers ) smile.

The essence of who you are and what makes you happy is music !

Pure joy that it's a living and your life !!!

Darn it, it happened again. I submitted a post and then I got an error message and it's lost. I've got to remember to copy before I submit just in case!

Anyway, Shalom it is good to hear from you again. And it's perfectly ok to be "outed" as a groupie. Heck, I'm in the Junior League, my best friends and my husband know, and I survived! LOL What you need is a different term. How about avid fan? Loyal supporter? Blogger friend?

Either way, I hope you'll get yourself a blogger name and join the fun. You don't have to use your real name, you know, and mum's the word...we won't tell your secret! Risa

Folks -

Do Chris a favor. DON'T FEED THE TROLLS. If you ignore them, they will go away. I was watching what was going on last night, but I didn't comment because I didn't want to engage the guy. Let's not waste Chris's valuable time by having him moderate these blog comments. By talking to them, you only encourage people to come over here and start up.

The TotalAxxess info for tonight's live broadcast is on the fansite:

http://chris-sligh.info/

There's a link there to a station site map where you can see what radio station has it in your area. Carrie is also correct about being able to hear it online. If you have no radio access (sorry NY, CA, etc.), you can listen online. Again, the link is on the fansite. Also, there is a phone number that you can call to join in on the conversation!

I'm Clean
words by Chris Sligh
music by Chris Sligh & Jason Walker

Love is just a picture of your glory
And my best tries at love have fallen short
I pretend these dirty clothes are holy
Knees patched up with grace from you, O Lord
No one is righteous
But I'm not the one you see

chorus:
I'm clean
I'm covered by forgiveness here
And only you can forget all I've done
I'm clean
Through no good of my own
But when you look at me you see your Son
And I am clean

Looking back, my past is worth forgetting
But every trust brings me to my knees
Where I can see the shades of your forgiving
Each color covers a sinful memory
I can't be righteous
But I'm not the one you see

chorus

On my own, I'm simply man at best
But my sin's as far as east from west
From you...
Christ's perfection now defines me

chorus

To Chris Sligh,
From GDA,

The radio stops, beyond being interviewed,

1)Are you going to perform acoustic, solo or with any recuited band members?

2)Will you have a single to preview/or promote?

3)Are you going to play any of the demos that been at the MySpace site?

rosalee said...

I'd like to hear the music that goes with that...

If anyone else is having trouble getting posts through because of Blogger errors, first try deleting your cache of Temporary Internet Files and Cookies (look under Tools/Internet Options). Someone in the Blogger Help Group suggested that, and I don't know if it was coincidence or not, but it seemed to help me.

Carrie said...

Thanks for posting the lyrics, they look promising.

Also I have to pimp Blake again (Sorry, Chris!) but I bought his song off of iTunes. I'm not sure how he's doing but I want him to do really well. I haven't heard him on the radio here yet and that freaks me out. I'd tell you all to go buy it but after last night I think we heard that enough times haha.

Congratulations, Chris-- it's official! Good to know...altho hearing the songs and the lyric to them is enough reccommendation for me. (I DO like the idea of a great piano-man joining you tho, must say.)

It has been such a long day here...but my brain won't turn off...

In a mention to what you said, about dinner with Haley and Phil and that-- I really like Haley. She has a really sweet way about her, that "smile" in her voice. I always liked that alot about her. She was really nice to me and the girls when we met her, which was, well pretty great. You can tell her she has fans in our house.

ChrisSligh said...

I'm pumped. Brash is a smaller label, obviously, but it's great in a lot of ways...they have done really, really well in the CCM market (Aaron Shust is the best selling new artist in the last 3 years, from what someone told me, and they helped Aaron win New Artist of the Year last year). Aaron Shust, their artist, sold more records than the other 4 New Artist nominees combined (all on major labels). So, they know how to get things done in the market.

But they are a mainstream label with distribution through ADA, which is Warner's version of Sony's Red (which has seen success with Elliot Yamin, of course). ADA had great success on the mainstream side last year with Panic! At the Disco. So...the systems are set up to sel records.

Brash is a small label, with a great history...but them being small is great in that they have experience (Steve Jones, the president worked for major labels for like 25 years) and they have the time to focus a lot of attention on me. So, it's a great place to be for a lot of reasons.

We're hoping we can match Aaron's debut for sales...but who knows.

Ultimately, it's gonna be fun to make records with these guys.

ChrisSligh said...

GDA,

Just saw your question.

When we do the radio stops, I'll go out for those 30 days probably with Jason, the piano player. We'll give the radio stations an exclusive listen to 3-4 songs from the album, and of course the single. We're hoping to service the single by the first of the year, so the single will be out for about a month before the radio tour. We will also do 1-2 songs acoustic in studio.

I think I answered all your questions.

Rosalee,

Actually...I just rewrote Empty Me!

Brown and I listened hard and he felt like we needed another pass at the music, so yesterday, Clint and I sat down, started from scratch and wrote a 10x better piece of music. Carrie said...

Chris,
I was going to send you a message with this big figured I can just post it here because other people might like to read it as well.

Keeping in mind the two you said were your potential singles; Empty Me and I'm Clean, I listened to them both back to back for way too long to try and pick what could work and what couldn't with each of them. I'm Clean would be AMAZING acoustic and vocally it just seems more powerful to me which is why I brought up the acoustic thing. Plus knowing you might tour radio stations and maybe sing it?

I'll say I'm obviously biased because I listened to I'm Clean for I don't even know how long last night but (and I know people will still disagree, that's okay, really) I really like EVERYTHING about it and that's rare for me I think. I'm probably one of the pickier people on the blog here haha.

Another thing that would be really awesome is if you did a tour that was acoustic and did the songs that way, you HAVE to find someone to play piano while you do acoustic guitar because I can't even get over how great that sounds in my head. and your acoustic singing voice just had me floored so, yeah, there's that. And I'm a big Jack's Mannequin/Something Corporate fan thought so maybe that's why I'm all into that kind of thing. BUT Andrew McMahon DOES put on an amazing live show. Probably some of the best ones I've seen.

Now I don't hate Empty Me, so no one get that impression. I'm excited to hear how the re-write turns out. I might even like it better, though it will have to be something epic to take the spot of I'm Clean, in my opinion. Sorry!

Oh and Chris, I'd ask which of the two you like better but I think (until I hear the rewrite of the other) that I already know the answer haha.

risalea said...

I like the first version of Empty Me so much I can't imagine how I will like the new one better, but I'm anxious to hear it!

GDA,

I get it. LOL...sorry I needed an explanation.

Tawny,

The photo shoot went really well. I think we got some great shots.

Oh, and sorry I couldn't figure out AOBTD...I racked my brain and it just didn't connect.

Anyway, peace out...must work out tomorrow morning then on to more meetings with the producers.

Peace,
Chris

I think I remember you saying this photoshoot would be for your album cover, am I correct or imagining things? Anyways, it'd be cool to see a sneak peek or something.

It's okay. It just sucks because all we have of that is one live audio. I still love it but just wish we had more. I know you'll never record it but I was listening to the song and the random thought popped into my head.

Off to bed, I have class in the morning ZzZzZ.

Okay, so I feel like my comments are bit repetative. But Chris, I just can't get over how happy I am for you!! I am SO excited about your future career and seeing you in concert. Your lyrics are wonderful!

I think it's so great that you get to see Phil/Kendra and Haley once in a while. I was at the show that Melinda and Phil did for the Boiler Room Theatre, and Haley was there watching. It was really cool to see the support you all have for each other!

Hooray, Hooray...It's Kelly Clarkson day. Tonight is the concert in San Diego & then again on Sunday in Hollywood.
I am so excited....

ChrisSligh said...

That's great, Cathy. Ash, my video guy, is also doing some video stuff for Sanctus Real, so I'm going to hang out with him at a concert where they're opening up for Steven Curtis Chapman. I'm pumped about that.

You have got a super weekend ahead of you, Cathy!! Be sure and take lots of pictures.

Kelly C. and Reba are going to be in Jonesboro (about 2 hours from here, and it's where Amanda's dad lives) in February and I'm going to see about getting tickets. I'd love to treat Amanda, but I don't know if she'll be allowed to get out in crowds like that by then.

Chris, have fun with your friend at the concert you're going to, and everyone else have a fun weekend. I'm at the moment dealing with a car issue (always fun!), but I'm taking my mom to the JL luncheon today and meeting friends there, then off to tour the homes decorated for the holidays. We always have a big time doing that and get ideas.

Later, friends! Risa

OK, tried to post twice yesterday or was it day before and kept getting error message (like Risalea). Grrr...

Trying again.

Checked out Jason Walker and LOVE that piano. So glad to know he's teaming up w/you.

So cool that your associations (w/Brown) are boosting your desirability around musictown! Akin to the reverse of bad company corrupts good morals.

I checked out Rocketown venue when you first mentioned playing there knowing it had to have involved MWS somehow. What a cool sounding place! I wanna move to Nashville!

Ronnie Millsap! Talk about a throwback to yesteryear! Liked him a lot in my Urban Cowboy stage (early 80's). Glad to hear he's still "out there" entertaining. Wonder what ever happened to Freddie Fender. Hmmm...is he still alive?? Can't remember.
Oh well...

Love, love, love "I'm Clean". But still think Empty Me is better. When I read you & Brown re-wrote it I had a slight panic inside. Oh no! Don't mess w/perfection!!
Hoping I'm pleasantly surprised.

Never heard Circle Bunnies Song before. Is this some standard goofy bus ride song from everyone's teen years that I missed somewhere along the way??

GREAT GREAT acoustic sound on Pleased at Axxess site. Your voice is to die for, Chris!

Thanks for posting link Carrie.

Freddy Fender (June 4, 1937 – October 14, 2006), born Baldemar Huerta in San Benito, Texas, USA, was a Mexican-American, Tejano, country, and rock and roll musician, known for his work as a solo artist and in the groups Los Super Seven and the Texas Tornados. He is best known for his 1975 hit "Before the Next Teardrop Falls".

Cathy Storms, enjoy Kelly!!

I'm still on my Neil Young high,so I'll pull a GDA here (and thanks, GDA, for the link to Roxy music the other day--although that wasn't my fave, it made me remember how much i liked their stuff).

These are from his early years:
Acoustic:

Old Man: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vef03k5i8VI

Heart of Gold: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7M1Se-p7uk

Electric:
Like a Hurricane: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1O6VxlMi69Q

Let's see, if Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Neil Young were to audition for American Idol or the Next Great American Band for that matter, would they have made it? I think not--too unique.
Chris, are you watching the band show?

Circle Bunny song is a song that the radio host wrote for his daughter (lyrics) and since he is on a night show now, he has every guest do their own version of the Circle Bunny song.

Hey, guys, do me a favor...if you myspace, can you post a bulleting with a link to my music myspace...encourage people to check out my music site as opposed to my personal site or the HPF site.

Meatball cracks me up. That's the name of a character my youth group made up back in the day and we have a whole rap about it that we put on our youthgroup's worship album as a secret song. Man, brings back memories! That gave me a good chuckle.

"Let's see, if Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Neil Young were to audition for American Idol or the Next Great American Band for that matter, would they have made it? I think not--too unique."

I imagine Simon's nightmare or dream would be to have as the top ten:
Bob Dylan*, Tom Waits*, Roger McGuinn, Neil Young, Rod Stewart, Ringo Starr, Bonnie Tyler, Tom Petty, Yoko Ono, and Marlene Dietrich.

These are people who wouldn't normally be thought as being a singer's singer.

* An early review of Bob Dylan described his singing as sounding like a growling bear. Dylan sent a letter to the magazine saying in effect, "did you ever consider a growling bear just might have something to say".

** one reviewer described Tom Waits voice as sounding as if he gargled with razorblades

risalea said...

Hey, GDA! I've heard of turducken, but never partaken of it. I'm not a duck fan...too gamey and greasy for my taste. I do like Paula Deen, though her recipes often require some adjusting unless you are in a hurry to clog all your arteries! LOL She is quite the character, which you can see on her other show, Paula's Party,(which is on Friday nights), and also in her autobiography. Her story is quite interesting, how she went from being basically housebound to a TV celebrity. (and as in most success stories, lots of hard work was involved)

And Rosalee, Rotel in your grocery circular? It can only be a matter of time before it is on your store shelves, especially since GDA reported seeing the TV ad.

Here's a Thanksgiving cooking tip for anyone out there in charge of the turkey. Use the Reynold's oven cooking bags...just follow the directions on the box. Your turkey will be moist and wonderful and you don't have to buy an expensive Butterball. You can get the 59 cents a pound special at Kroger's (or wherever) and you'll still get kudos!

Cute banner! Can we steal it for our pages?

OK, busy day ahead. I've got to work my shift at Home Tours this afternoon. Y'all have a great weekend. Chris, I'm patiently waiting for the new version of "Empty Me"! Take care, Risa

HstryQT said...

Carrie - added to my page. Very nice.

Rosalee- email sent!

Per Food Netowrk - I'm lucky that my husband's more of a cook than me. (But now that I'm all "mid west house wife/stay at home mom" I have a chance to learn.) Alton Brown is Danny's hero, we have all of the cookbooks and I keep trying to find a way for us to meet him as a birthday/Christmas gift for him. We're doing Alton's recipe for our turkey. It's my first time hosting a Thanksgiving meal and I'm really excited! Let's hope I don't kill anyone, or a dog, or something.

Risa- You're right about Kroger! I got our 10lb. turkey for $5!! I was so excited. Danny of course burst my bubble by saying I must've gotten a crappy $5 turkey. He'll see how wrong he is :).

Alright enough of my rambling!

Lori

Unknown said...

GDA and Rosalee, Sonny Bono is another inspired choice. I say he bumps Roger McGuinn or Ringo. McGuinn doesn't sound that bad to me, and Ringo didn't have that much of an impact as a solo singer (don't throw any Rotel at me!)

It was pretty cool standing on the streets of San Diego talking to her band members. Thats why I always carry a Sharpie...lol...
Anyway her opening act John McCloghlin (I know I spelled it wrong) was awesome. His vocals are really pretty and his keyboard playing is amazing. I have never seen anyone play like he does.
It was a great night and one more tomorrow in Hollywood.

Chris,
Ok I have been listening to your new version of Empty Me and I like the previous version better. The music to the previous version seemed to have a much catchier tune to it. I figure when a song gets stuck in my head then that is good. Also the other version was much easier to sing along with. I also like the older version of Empty Me better than I am Clean. However now that you have changed Empty Me, I like I Am Clean better. I am also still a big fan of Ready.

Sorry I haven't posted much lately but just super busy with work. I did listen to your interview live the other night. I gotta say that I love your version of the Bunny song. I have always felt you have a very soulful quality to your voice and it really came through with that Bunny song. You can really pull off jazz/blues Chris.

Ok gotta run. Off to see Beowolf 3D at Imax. Please give some thought about not changing Empty Me. I really did like the previous version better.

What if you put that design on physical "business cards" that you could sell to us? We as the street team could then give them out to our friends, relatives, co-workers, etc. and post them on bulletin boards in stores, churches, doctor's offices, etc. If it's feasible, maybe it could help finance your Nashville trip..

A few months ago I was talking to some of the people on the fansite about handing out business cards with a few of the websites listed (such as the HPF websites, Chris-Sligh.Info, Chris's myspace sites, blog site, etc.). I was waiting until things shook out with all of his signings. Maybe this could work instead.
Does anyone have an opinion on this?

Carrie said...

Rosalee, that is an awesome idea!

I'm glad you all like the banner. Like I said, you can do whatever you'd like with it. Put it on your myspaces, put it on others in a comment, etc. I mean the purpose of it IS to promote! Once the album promo/tour comes out closer I was thinking of making a poster but I didn't wanna jump the gun.

Still gotta check out the myspace songs so no word on those just yet, but I bet they're awesome.

Carrie said...

Chris,
Back with my "opinions" haha.

Okay... this was really hard because at first I guess I wasn't sure which version of "Empty Me" I liked better but I think I'm going to go with the re-write simply because... well, I'm a girl and it's prettier haha. It was a lot easier for me to listen to than the other version. I know some people might disagree, but that's okay.

"Love Is Raining Down" has gone through so many changes and it gets better every time and this one reminds me of the summer because when I first heard it, it was the day before Emcy and I went to the concert. I was going to ask you about music but got uh... distracted that day. So while I like it, don't change it too much, okay?!

And I still love "I'm Clean" like something fierce! But I'm not making any sense with anything I said so hopefully someone will have better feedback to contribute.

Are you liking all of these re-writes, yes? Because I don't think you would do them if you didn't?

Unknown said...

Histry, you know you've settled in to your new place if you're hosting Thanksgiving dinner--impressive!

Rosalee--whew, Country People is an issue, not a spinoff (like the Spanish version)--I was really puzzled there, haha!!

Cathy--so glad you enjoyed the concert and had a little person-to-person encounter with one of Kelly's band members. Wasn't Jon McLaughlin good? great pianist (although my back and knees were aching for him--he does that weird crouch most of the time)

GDA, okay, so who would get tossed off first? I'm thinking it would be Sonny or Tom Waits. Waits might hang in on style points. Sonny really had no style (his style was Cher, and she ain't there), and if sings I Got You Babe, Simon will make sure he's toast--"Horrendous!"

rosalee said...

I listened to the new versions on
Myspace. I agree with Carmen - I like the old version of Empty Me better. I also like the original Love is Raining Down better (first version - this one is the third), although there were parts of this last arrangement that I also liked.

In the "old days" when there were 45 rpm records, when an artist put out a single, there was an "A" side and a "B" side. Wouldn't it be nice if you could release your "single" with a digital "A" side and "B" side?

Change of topic -
A Tale from Long Island:

My teenage supermarket cashier was complaining yesterday that in Lowe's (it's like a Home Depot hardware store) they are now selling Christmas trees, but are calling them "Family" trees. Boy, that cashier was mad! I wonder who dreamed up that marketing strategy?

gdahimself said...

To Lori,
From GDA,

It seems Danny needs to be more diplomatic or do the food shopping. Given your new or increased interest and your efforts in cooking he should be more supportive and encouraging.

Alton Brown & his Grandmother, Ma Mae, have a show on making Southern styled biscuits. This will probably be rebroadcast.

I don’t really cook so this is all academic to me.

GirlyGirl45,

Don’t you look good in red?

Ringo, in the early seventies, did have a string of successful charting singles, the first before any of other Beatles. John Lennon already did have two but under the Plastic Ono Band name.

Sonny, like Ringo, was known for his sense of humor.

I had forgotten Captain Beefheart, not a particularly commercially successful but for twenty years always had a label and frequently the critics behind him.

Simon will schlag everyone in this line up.
What’s the criteria for elimination? Working our way to number one with the person Simon would be most galled at their popular success but would be for him the voice of least conventional, marketable quality?

“Tonight’s the Night” by Rod Stewart & Bonnie Tyler?
“I got you, Babe” by Sonny & Marlene?
“Don't Think Twice, It's All Right” By Bob Dylan & Yoko Ono?

I heard on the radio the following similar incident that was with great distain referred to as Political Correctness run amok.

People quitting a sidewalk Santa Claus organization because they were being told to say Ha, Ha, Ha in place of Ho, Ho, Ho because Ho, Ho, Ho scares children and women might get offend because current slang meaning for "ho".

Chris,

So when you told me you were rewriting Empty Me, I was like, um, no, don't do that! But, well...um...yea, I like the rewritten version better. Hey, I can admit when I'm wrong-I was wrong. I also like the new improved Love is Raining Down. So what do I know, you can improve when you rewrite. Course this all makes me sound like a big suck up, but I don't care. I'm also really getting to like I'm Clean maybe even better than Empty Me. I guess I wonder what makes you decide to go back and rewrite and rewrite? I'm guessing you must be some kind of perfectionist.

Hey you-all! Wow, I am LOVING the discussions on-going! Fun!

Gosh I feel the need to weigh in on Ro-tel! Hate to say it, but I am against it.(Too spicey for my wimpy tastes) I however LOVE Walmart's new line of salsa, the black bean and corn Mild one. You can use it on everything! I swear!
Yum. Just sayin'.

I have Emerson Hart's album blasting away in my headphones here, while the family watches Heroes. It's hard to think of music right now, but I was rather titillated to find ELO brought up in passing. (thanks GDA)

We watched the Greatest Amercian Band show last night, and we're liking that alot. Spouse says that some local musicians are really wanting to support Denver and the Mile High Orchestra, they say he's a good guy. We loved their performance, and really everyone's was good I thought--but then, the judges were all panning it. It makes Spouse and I believe we are getting old, because honestly, we liked it. Maybe our hearing's going or something, IDK. Sixwire did a song known by Michael MacDonald, and we thought it was good, and then they hated it. *sigh*

Chris, so far Spouse likes "Beautiful" best, for all it's soulful feel. After what I told you above about our musical tastes, perhaps you'll take it with a grain of salt! LOL.

HI Chris, to answer your question. Bryan grew up across the street from me and my son had a baby with his sister. That is the beautiful little girl in the video and she is sitting here with me right now, we just got back from the Bee Movie. Caity is a huge Slighfan and likes hearing your new stuff on myspace. She saw you at the Missouri State Fair and she even got a hug from Sanjaya. She misses her Uncle Bryan but has the hope of God's great mercy. She had a dream of him right after he died. He told her to always wear her seatbelt. She picked out what she wanted on that video and that was the song she wanted.

Lori, you are not a housewife. You are not married to your house. You're a homemaker. Or as I prefer to be known...CEO. LOL (Just jokin', Gaylon dear!)

I have listened to the new version of "Empty Me" several times today. I like it, I just can't get the tune in my head like the other one. The other one stuck. I was singing it after a couple of listens. I think the melody of the new one is quite beautiful..it's just not as singable for me. And it's all about me. : ) But there's several parts I like. I think I just have to get used to the new version. How's that for sitting on the fence?

Bullyse...against Rotel? That's unheard of! Have you tried the mild version? I'm not a hot fan and it's fine for me, but then I've had Rotel dip since I was old enough to go to bunking parties (that's a sleepover)...it was a staple...and I probably have cheese dip running through the old veins.

OK, long day, and I'm going to get to bed early for a change in a little bit. Y'all take care. Risa
