9-11

Today is the anniversary of that sad day 6 years ago.

I remember I had worked till about 3 in the morning the night before, so I was fast asleep when my best friend called me. He told me to turn on my tv. Unfortunately at the time I didn't have a tv. So, my roommate and I got in our car and drove over to Circuit City and literally sat in shock as we saw the 2nd plane hit. Then in utter disbelief as the towers came down. I didn't cry, but I remember just sitting down on the floor of Circuit City, people walking past me in and out of the store, me staring at the tv with my roommate.

Anger, frustration at being helpless, fear that by some chance I knew someone marred by this tragedy...it was a day I'll never forget.

I think that this is that moment that everyone from this generation will hold on to and remember where they were when it happened for the rest of their lives. My parents and the generation before this do that with JFK. Sure, JFK seemed to hold the hearts of a nation...but 9/11 went straight at the heart of a nation.

I don't think the answer is war. I don't think the answer is hatred of a nationality or people. The answer is in understanding that this world is a dirty place. There is none good, no not one. It is by the grace of God alone that we are able to live in America, but it does not make us superior. It makes us lucky. We should defend ourselves, but love our enemies.

But most importantly, we must remember.

Thank you Chris. This is such a sad day.
War is not the answer & yes it is by the grace of god that we live in the United States. I still remember where I was when JFK was shot (elemetary school) but remember it like it was yesterday.
Same with 9/11.
I pray for a peaceful future & with your generation I think it might just happen.

On this day IS not the day to start a war debate. Someone attacked innocent people who had done nothing after eight previous years of turning the other cheek before that day.

Cathy Storms said...

badpacifist~your right..Not the day & wasn't thinking about a debate. I apoligize if it came across that way.

Beautiful, Chris.

Cathy peace and love ...not directed at anybody just didn't want anyone to get crazy. I do love my enemies but the devil is also my enemy and I just am not a good enough Christian to love him or those who commit acts he would love.
Sept 11 was the day I realized I was a very bad pacifist. I understand what Chris is saying.

Cathy Storms said...

Thanks badpacifist..peace & love back at ya....

Yeah, just so we're clear, I wasn't starting a debate...just giving ramblings about something close to me. The point wasn't war...the point is that the world is a dirty place.

To Chris,
From GDA,

There is much that can be said, my experiences are nowhere as direct as Rosalee's. Maybe, I will post further if what I have to say can compliment hers, I just scanned her posting.

This where I get I may be rattling the cage.

I as a doubter/seeker these are the sort of incidents that cause me to have great trouble seeing God's action in the occurrences of earthly existence.
So many homemade flyers of people seeking lost fathers, sons, & brothers. Not discounting woman but most I saw were for men.
People who were unsuspecting bystanders in what is supposedly waged as a "Holy War".

It for me makes faith quite difficult.
Else there were great accolades for how God has been guide various events in general, your career in particular. Where's the flipside of how he preempt these events?

GDA

PS: I don’t believe there is such a thing as a “Holy Land”, only contested places of religious significance.

I will never forget sitting in my freshmen health class when we got the announcement, and then turning on the tv and crying in shock with my classmates six years ago. My heart goes out to all the families deeply affected by the tragedy on 9/11 and also to every single soldier. I do not think that war is the answer either, but God Bless those who are defending us.

Unknown said...

As a Christian, it's mandatory to understand that every person on this earth was born radically depraved. We are all born into sin the moment we are conceived. The occurrences on this earth that take place that are harmful and that reek with tragedy are not of God.

It's easy to justify the ends of every bad deed by saying there is no God or that He has abandoned us...but it's until we understand that this life is so short, that we can truly understand God's grace and mercy. Jesus came to save the lost from God's wrath...think 9-11 was bad? Think the holocaust was bad? The Bible says not to fear the reproach of man but the holy and righteous wrath of God.

It's an easy thing to do, blame God or the absence of God for all our earthly sorrow. I say those are the times to be lifting up God and to be counting our blessings..And run to Him for comfort. Because the fact that God loves us isn't enough to keep us from being broken by this dirty world. We're still sinners...the world and the universe are tainted with the sin and death that was brought into it by Adam and Eve.

If you're looking for a scapegoat, try looking to the radically depraved. Not the divine.

-Norman

Unknown said...

Oh and when I said "If you're looking for a scapegoat..." I was meaning that in a general way..not "You" as in Chris Sligh...Just for clarification. =D

Thanks for the great post Chris. Shows how genuine your heart is. God Bless as always.

Chris,

Wonderful post. I knew I would read insightful, spiritual, and even thougt provoking posts. That's why I love this blog, well that and the fact that it's Sligh's.

Rosalee, to you I would say, I hope that you are healing and that time has helped fade some of the horrible memories. Not sure if that is even possible, but I wish it for you all the same.

I listed to Hero coming in to work this morning, the lyrics were so perfect for a day like today. I'm still looking for a Hero.

Love and Peace to all my fro patro buddies!

It really shows God's magnificence that He can still love us even though we are all capable of creating such a world of hate.

Thanks, Chris, for putting it into words better than I ever could.

I'm posting a few pictures from that time. The first four were not taken by me, but they illustrate just how close I was:

This photo shows the North Tower collapsing. This was the closest tower to me (a few hundred feet away). It was the first one to get hit, but the second one to fall. The rectangular building in the center was World Trade Center Bldg 7. It collapsed later that afternoon. My office building is the shorter white/glass building with the step-like/slanted roof:

In the next one, you can make out my building in the upper center amidst the smoke:

"Love our enemies"? I think not.

I have SO MUCH to say on this subject but can't right now because I'm in between classes and in need of a shower. I promise I'll behave and not start a big debate, either.

Let's see if blogger eats this reply...

God gave us Free-will to do with what we will. It doesn't mean He will always like it. It also doesn;t follow, that He can't bring goodness out of Bad. He really can, and that's where our perseverence and faith come in. We just need believe He will.

Also-- Chris, I love the story you told. Thanks you for that. I think we all sympathize with how you must have felt sitting there...because in our own way, we all felt like that. Our commonality in our shock and greif made us One. It's just afterwards, and how we chose to react to the feelings of anger fear and greif, that we differ. *Hugs*

NORMAN !

I rather thought that I was the targeted "you".

I am not scapegoating God for if I had reach that decision I would not be a seeker with doubts but some who would have outright abandoned him years ago.

Also this exchange would not be taking place because I would have most likely bolted upon reading Chris' declaration of being a Christ-follower and not returned.

GDA

risalea said...

GDA, I hope you will write about your experiences of 9-11.

I'm sure Chris will post a response to your thoughts above, but if you will allow me, I'd like to chime in.

Hebrews 11:1 says: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

As Chris said, we live in a world that is dirty. It is full of sin, brought on by man's downfall in the Garden of Eden. Yet, all around me, I see evidence of Him. I'm looking out my office window right now, and I see the beautiful green grass, refreshed by a recent rainfall. I see the sun shining on a beautiful cool day, with the first hint of fall in the air. I see material blessings all around me. In all these things, I see Him.

I think He can take a horrible event in the world or a devastating period in one's life and that good can come from it. Faith is what gets you through to the other side when the world is closing in.

God did not promise us a perfect life on this earth, just the opportunity for a perfect eternity with Him.

GDA,

If you were the targeted "you", I would have said so. Sorry to be so blunt about it, but that's exactly the kind of person I am. I don't really have a knack for beating around the bush.

However, I know too many people who are looking to disbelief and doubt in God's name for the soul purpose of justifying their beliefs. For instance, they'll say they don't believe in God because their sister has cancer..or they doubt God's greatness and love because of tragedies like 9/11. My grandmother was the same way. She doubted God's love because her husband died even after a long healthy life together.

Even my Christian friends will admit that they deny and doubt God's love. Simply because of the real and cold fact that 9/11 happened. They have no other reason. "If God was so loving, why did so many people die?"

To add onto what Risa said, we live in the land of believing. Not knowing. Jesus said that blessed are those who have not seen and yet believed.

Sorry if there was a misunderstanding, GDA.

Beautiful Chris. I to remember where i was on Sept. 11. I was in geometry class. I remember we did nothing at school all day or the next but watch. I remember crying all day. I knew no one in there. Yet they were all my family, we are americans. I hate it that us as a generation have so many things etched into our hearts that are horible, whether it be 9/11 or school shootings, or war.

I agree with you Chris War isnt the answer. I often say support my dad and the troops, not the war. But i will stop now, i tend to go over board with the war subject, just because it is close to my heart.

And just wanted all of you to know, thanks for being my family and i love all of you.

and Risa, my seats are front row, infront of where Blake will be in the boys song.

God Bless,

Where in the World is Chris Sligh?...I hesitated to post our light-hearted geography/history lesson today, as our subject matter has been very serious and deep, but I'm going to post something about the next couple of days. I've got a full work day tomorrow and Thursday it is on to Memphis!

Tonight, Chris heads south again to grace the stage at Greensboro, NC. Greensboro is the largest city in NC, with an estimated population topping 240,000. It is situated in the Piedmont region, at the intersection of I-85 and I-40.

The city was named for Major General Nathanael Greene, considered by one historian to be the best American general of the Revolutionary War, surpassing even George Washington. (Lori, our resident historian, would you agree?) Greensboro served as a temporary capital of the Confederacy when Richmond had to be evacuated at the end of the Civil War. Greensboro was also the site for an early civil rights sit-in at the Woolworth lunch counter, which lasted several months. Sit-ins spread across the US, leading to the desegregation of Woolworths and other chains.

NEXT STOP--Duluth, GA! My sister was a long-time Atlanta area resident, and this is one of the cities that she called home. (She still misses it greatly!) Duluth, as you might have guessed, is a suburb of Atlanta, Gwinnett County, and is located close to I-85.

The origin of the name of the city, was Daniel Greysolon Du Luth (1636-1710),a French captain and explorer. Peachtree Road, an offshoot of an old Indian trail that ran along the bridge south of the Chattahoochee River, was surveyed and constructed during the War of 1812 and connected Ft. Daniel with the fort at Standing Peachtree, 30 miles down river. Peachtree Road is still the most famous road in Georgia.

Duluth is recognized as a model city for Gwinnett County. It is a blend of small businesses, entrepreneurial enterprise, major corporations and visionary developers.

OK, that's it for now. If anyone wants to add more info on these two areas, please do! Till next time....when we will visit the Rock and Roll capital of the World...Memphis!

6 years ago today I was taking my first photography class which is something significant right there. Anyway, when I heard a plane had hit the building, I was freaked out. When I heard of the second, it went right over my head that it wasn't just some freak coincidence at first until there were talks all day of terrorist attacks. As the day went on, I was so scared that by the time I got home, I locked myself inside and didn't leave. I remember watching the coverage over and over again and just being completely horrified because it was something which should have never happened.

As for the war, I have a cousin who went away to it and remember having to say goodbye to him before he left. I ended up crying because -- I like to say I'm pro-peace as opposed to saying anti-war, and I couldn't understand WHY he would want to go out and put himself in danger but it was his own personal choice. I don't want to get into this, though. It's a very touchy subject and rather than bring up the negatives of the world, I want to focus on the positives.

risalea said...

Amanda, you've got better seats than me again! LOL Oh, well, I'm glad you'll be up front close to the action. Ours aren't too bad, Floor 1, Row L, Seats 7 and 8. I almost waited to get them at the boxoffice, but we can't get there until around 5:30 or so, and I didn't want to take a chance. Chris look towards your right, I think the seats start from the outside with 1. And if you hear someone murdered his wife over the price of her second set of AI tickets, you'll know who the victim was. : ) Memphis, here we come!! Risa

Memphis - the Rock N Roll capitol of the world!

Sam Phillips of Sun Records would love that statement, assuming he hasn't already said it himself.

Sun Records, once home to Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, & Charlie Rich.

Rockabilly and Country spun into rock and roll then gold.

Nice blog today, Chris.
Good to read your insight.

Rosalee, I'm SO sorry you had to experience it first hand. SO glad you're hear to tell it, though.

On THAT day, being in AZ, it was still early and we were awakened by a phone call. Fire dept personnel office calling my husband (a firefighter/paramedic) in to the airport. What?? The airport? That's wierd. They said quote: "WTC has been hit by planes. Pentagon too. Planes are falling all over the country."
My husband hangs up phone and yells same message to me in the bathroom. I seriously thought for a second the rapture was occuring! Why were we still here?? Talk about momentary TERROR!!

We ran downstairs to the TV and watched in shock, the collapsing towers. It was my youngest child's 6th birthday.

Today, I told him, was the halfway mark of his life. 6 yrs pre-9/11, 6 yrs post.

To me, evil like this, demonstrates what can happen when man turns his heart against a loving God. I do not question His existence. I question why He has chosen to extend such grace and mercy to mankind who CAN and DOES commit such acts and marvel at how He resolves justice and grace at the cross. Ingenious!

Peace to all!

Thank you so much for recognizing 9-11. As a vet, I have some very, very personal stories to share concerning this war...but I don't think I'm ready. One of these stories concerns news about a very dear friend to me that I received the day before I left for D.C. this past weekend that caused me to almost skip the trip, however, he convinced me to go. And now I'm crying.

Anyway, from someone who is deeply, deeply affected by this, thanks for this blog..and thank you for taking the time out to have a quick word with a slightly new fan.

You should consider auditioning for the baritone position in the Gaither Vocal Band, Chris!! That'd be so awesome! But if you're not that much into Gospel music, that's cool.

David Phelps (The former tenor singer from the GVB) in concert...I'm actually going to be attending that. You should too if you're schedule permits. Just a thought.

I have read this blog and comments for a few months. I must say Chris Sligh's blog is always interesting and insightful. I havent commented so far. Here I want to say something. It seems like some Christians cant digest 9/11. They cant say they love the ones who did it or that they forgive them. I dont live in US. I havent experienced it or anything close to it in my life. So I dont know how it really feels. But I can understand the great mental agony of those who happened to have loved ones caught in 9/11. I have to tell this to them. Think about the Christians in the countries where Christianity is forbidden. I believe you would have read about places where Christians are persecuted and killed almost daily for their faith. They are living out 9/11 daily. Be happy and feel blessed that you live in US where you live a privileged life. 9/11 is like a one-off event for US people. But for some it is their daily life. So think about them and strengthen yourself.

Anyway, I'm going to Nashville tomorrow on our day off for some meetings, so my management team is coming down for the show and we're leaving as soon as the show is over to head to Nashville, so I won't be able to go to aftershow. So, please, please, please be there beforehand. I'll look for Amanda and hopefully, Risalea, you'll be with her in your bedazzled Blogger Girl shirt.

I had a carful of my employees in my beatup old Honda without a radio, and streets kept getting pinched off because of [false] reports of bombs on the Mall. Milling through the gridlock were homeless souls with mental illness who were bewildered by what was happening around them. We could see black smoke billowing from the Pentagon. When we finally crossed the bridge into Virginia, I was struck by the utter calm and normalcy of people walking their dogs. Relief. After I got people home and watched the reports, I headed to Iwo Jima Memorial, down the street from me, because it's a peaceful place with a view of the city. I needed air, and I needed to reflect. It was a scary day, and enormously sad.

On a lighter note, Chris, I'm so sorry I missed you, Lori, Carmen, and the other Fro' Patro'ers in DC (but i felt included in your shoutout during the concert!). Lori and I connected by cell phone and wave across the arena at intermission, so that was nice. You were AWESOME, Chris. Typical was fantastic, as was whatever split jump you managed (was that during the finale? can't remember), and Chriljaya and Boyband. I loved it!! But I missed you for a good cause--I was privileged to celebrate Sanjaya's birthday with Mr. Teen Pop Sensation himself, what a treat! But, as I said, I was so looking forward to meeting you as well. So much, in fact, that I'm thinking about the Charlottesville show. Hmmm. I'm gonna go look for a ticket...

ENJOY TONIGHT WITH AMANDA AND RISALEA!!!!

bullyse,
Hey I loved being able to give Laura that extra pass. This might sound wierd to some of ya'll but I was talking to Lori about giving Laura the pass when we were walking to the venue. For some reason I had this strong impression to give it to her. In the past, whenever I have these impressions, I have learned that is best to act upon them. Anyway, we walked over to Laura who had been outside all day and the first thing she said kind of off hand was "Boy i I would love to get an after show pass." Now she had no idea that I had one. I looked at Lori and I said something to the effect that Laura is meant to have this pass. She agreed with me and so I gave Laura the pass. Then to top everything off, we ended up sitting right next to each other. Another sign-- yeah I believe God leads us to do the things we are meant to do. Laura was meant to have that pass. And yeah, it made the evening that much better to share it with her. She stood up during Sligh's performances with me and I stood up with her during Blakes performances. We had a great time and to make it all the sweeter, I made a new friend. God is good.

Girlygirl,
I am so sad that I didn't get to see you in DC. I glad you got to go to the birthday party. Hey think about going to the last concert in Manchester, NH. I will be at both of them. Would love to meet up with you.

Chris,
I sorry to hear that you are sick. You mentioned that you thought you were coming down with something on Sunday. Sorry that you were right. Take care of yourself. I hope you still get to meeet Risa. I am telling you that girl is a hoot!

I've decided to come up with my own american idol tour concert experience. (Just so I can fit in with all you people who have actually went).

So yeah!! I went to the concert and met Chris Sligh!! It was pretty cool. His hair reminded me of the time I got suspended for shaving our principal's head at a pep rally. I got front row seats and then I threw popcorn at Sanjaya because he reminds me of popcorn. All in all, my experience was wonderful and non-existent. I hope to see you all at the next one!! =D

Ok joking aside, am I the only regular blogger here that hasn't been to a concert yet? Just curious.

Unknown said...

Oh yeah.

Chris,

Gargle at least three cups of warm salt water mixed with tropicana lemonade a day. That's what my grandma made me do. It tastes horrible but it made me feel really sleepy. I dunno if that helps.

Get better soon..

Here is a little essay I wrote for my Politics of Russia class:

Six Years Later

My last essay was sub par because I was distracted. I began my path
of thought by thinking how weird our first assignment was due on
9/11. On that day back in 2001 I was at the Help Desk when someone
said a plane hit one of the twin towers. I tried to get on CNN but
the site wasn't responding. So I went on my way to my German
literature class. The class was a Tuesday/Thursday 9:30-10:45am
class.

I went to class thinking it was only a small plane. I really did not
think it was going to be anything but some poor pilot getting having a
very bad day. In class we saw a film about the devastation of Germany
after World War II. My second home is Germany. I've traveled around
much of the country. Hamburg was totally destroyed. You can still
see signs of the destruction from World War II even though it's been
year since World War II.

I was shocked to hear from a friend told me that the towers had
collapsed. To see a movie about the destruction of Germany then to
find out something like it happened in my own back yard was something
that I'm still trying to figure out. Is the history of a nation the
sum of the histories of its people? Germany, like Russia, has many
historical burdens. Is Germany burdened by its history? If not then
why not? Was it the lack of anyone with any forethought that no one
in the US thought have a Marshal plan for Russia after the Soviet
Union broke apart?

The biggest question I think about today is how much of a burden is
the history of 9/11 on the US? There are many issues to think about.
I hope to focus more on Russia next week. Those are some of the things
flying around in my brain. (As well as the instructions of how to
find the IP address in Vista.)

The meet and greet was great, the only way it would of been better is if you and Gina where there. Chris thanks so much for wearing the bracelet. I flipped when i saw it on you. I have some great pics of the show and some great pics after the show, lets just say Amanda got b-day kisses from CAKE haha how awesome right. Anyways thats all for now, i have blaker girls and richness and etrain and yea alot ot update, ill write a full review and post it on the board soon.

CHRIS: thanks again, you where a big part in making this day amazing. I luv ya. OH did you like your SLIGH is a FOX sign. haha i thought you would. OH and you where in great voice tonight. ok seriously im going to bed. but yes it was a great night.

And Risa im so glad i got to share it with you.

I forgot to tell you Chris, i bought you a bag of hershey kisses, you know kisses from the fro' patro' to make you feel better, but i got hungry waiting outside for yall, so we opened them up and ate them. Oh and tell Phil Amanda Felisha's friends said he has Hot eyes. I know weird right, but me and Phil where way random tonight and we have the same exact color eyes and we decided we had hot eyes. haha.

risalea said...

OK, it's after 2, I just dropped off my friend, Carol and I am WIDE AWAKE! Too much Diet Coke on the way home, trying to stay awake and out of the way of the 10,000 18 wheelers on I-40! LOL

OK, brief synopsis. Or not, I tend to be wordy, as you guys know. LOL As I posted earlier, I was unable to go to Memphis as early as I wanted. I was waiting on Carol who had a meeting that she couldn't miss. And I couldn't go without my friend. So, I had pretty much resigned myself to the fact I wouldn't get to meet Chris before the show. Amanda got there much earlier than we did, around noonish, but she didn't see him or any other Idols I don't believe before the show.

We got parked in the parking garage and went straight to will call. We had to wait for our meet and greet passes, but they made a call and magically, they appeared. : ) While waiting, we found Amanda, chatting with the famous security guard, Kathy. I didn't know she was famous, but you learn something every day. : ) Kathy graciously took my gift bag to Chris later on, in the arena before the show started.

Ok, I was extremely jealous of Amanda's great seats, but she deserved them. She got lots of attention from Chris during the show and many of the Idols, and I'm glad. She is the American Idol Queen! And actually, ours were pretty darn good, just five rows back from her, in seats 7 and 8.

I think Chris saw me...I got a couple of waves anyway, though he may not have known who was acting a fool trying to get his attention. LOL

This show was exactly 2 months after the North Little Rock show. I immediately noticed how much more relaxed and comfortable everyone was. Watch out for our boy, Chris...he may be on Dancing With the Stars next. Chris, you are much more comfortable on stage. I know you weren't feeling well, but you put on a great performance for your fans, and they wouldn't have known it. He jumped around like a jackrabbit.
Loved it!

My only disappointment was at the end. You were at the front for a minute, and I tried my best to mow down the people in seats 1-6 and they just wouldn't move fast enough. : ) By the time I got to the center aisle, you had turned and were walking offstage. But I know you were in a hurry to get going to Nashville, on top of being sick. It's all good, and again, I so appreciate the heads up and mention on the blog this morning.

OK, now for the Meet and Greet. We waited in section 110, and then after about 20 min. or so, we were led to the M & G room. I got pics with Haley, Phil, Lakisha, and Melinda. We also saw Chris R. and Blake. Sanjaya wasn't there, but his sister was. Neither was Jordin or Gina.

I'll have to say my favorite part was watching Amanda have such a great time. She got kisses and hugs from her CAKE boys, and she was happy as a clam (as you can tell from her above post). She's got some awesome pictures.

OK, that's it for now. I'm going to try and go ahead and get some pictures up and I'll post a link asap.

Night all, and Chris, get well soon. And special thanks to Lori, who kept me updated on blog posts via email, and Carmen, who called to see how my Memphis Idol experience was going. Take care, Risa

I just realized I didn't get Memphis up before I left. So...Where in the World WAS Chris Sligh on Sept. 13th? Memphis, TN!

Memphis is in the southwestern corner of Tennessee. As of 2006, Memphis had an estimated population of 670,902, making it the largest city in the state of Tennessee.

Memphis was founded in 1820 and was incorporated as a city in 1826. The city was named after the ancient capital of Egypt on the Nile River.

The cotton economy of the antebellum South depended on the forced labor of large numbers of African-American slaves, and Memphis became a major slave market. Slaves seeking their freedom turned to the Underground Railroad to escape to the free states of the North, and the Memphis home of Jacob Burkle was a way-station on their route to freedom.

Memphis grew into the world's largest spot cotton market (over 40% of the nation's crop was traded here) and the world's largest hardwood lumber market.

Memphis developed an extensive network of parks and public works as part of the national City Beautiful Movement. During the 1960s the city was at the center of civil rights issues, notably the location of a sanitation workers' strike. Memphis is also where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968 at the Lorraine Motel, the day after giving his prophetic "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech at the Mason Temple.

Beginning in the early 20th Century Memphis became famous for the innovative strains of African-American music, including gospel, blues, jazz, soul, and Rhythm and Blues genres, a tradition that continues to this day. Many notable blues musicians grew up in and around the Memphis and northern Mississippi, and performed there regularly. These included such musical greats as Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, B.B. King, and Howlin' Wolf.

The young Elvis Presley frequently listened to gospel and soul music, and many of his early recordings were inspired or written by African-American composers and recording artists in the Mid-South area.

Memphis is the home of founders and establishers of various American music genres, including Blues, Gospel, Rock n' Roll, and "sharecropper" country music (in contrast to the "rhinestone" country sound of Nashville). Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and B. B. King were all getting their starts in Memphis in the 1950s. They are respectively dubbed the "King" of Country, Rock n' Roll, and Blues. Other famous musicians who either grew up or got their starts in the Memphis area include the Box Tops, the Gentrys, the Grifters, Aretha Franklin, Carl Perkins, John Lee Hooker, Justin Timberlake, Howlin' Wolf, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Charlie Rich, Lucero (band), Al Green, Muddy Waters, Big Star, Tina Turner, Roy Orbison, Willie Mae Ford Smith, Sam Cooke, Booker T. and the MGs, Otis Redding, Arthur Lee, The Blackwood Brothers, Isaac Hayes, Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, The Staple Singers, Sam and Dave, Three 6 Mafia, DJ Squeeky, 8 Ball & MJG,Yo Gotti, Elise Neal, Shawn Lane, The Sylvers, Anita Ward and "Father of the Blues" W.C. Handy.

Thanks for the concert recaps Risa and Amanda! It's so great you both had such great seats and got some on-stage attention! I can't wait to see the pictures - especially of Amanda's rockin' hair :). And Risa it was no problem to send you the emails - you saw how happy I was to do it! lol :).

Amanda I heard about the security guard's reference to Carmen - SOOOO FUNNY! She's almost as famous as you are! :) I think Carmen and Amanda are the queens of Season 6's Idol Fan-dom.

But speaking of being "famous," you know one thing I learned while at my concert? JUST how many people are out there reading these blog comments and following our little antics. I met multiple people at my show that were like "You're History Cutie? I know you!" and I was like "Really???" lol. Guys it's like we're on a reality tv show or something. I guess I always thought that people, other than us, followed Chris' blog and comments but just skimmed through the rest of what we say, or something. But alas - we're quasi-famous. :) Who knew?

Risa and Amanda - Carmen and Histryqt, and everyone who got to see Chris this week - I am so happy for you. It's only been a week for me, but I am still processing it. I think you are lucky that you got to go with Fro Patroers.

I went with a friend who likes Idol, but not crazed like me. Risa - I wanted to make sure Chris knew where I was - so I had printed a sign that said "Hey Chris" on one side and "it's Marleybone!" on the other side. He saw it right away a way and cracked up. Chris - you couldn't have been sweeter or more funny on stage. I had pretty good seats so I felt like I was staring at you the whole time. I am shyer than I thought I would be - please realize I am not a nut. Ok - maybe a little nuts. What I wanted to say and didn't, was that you have made a big difference in my life, in ways you could never imagine. That's your gift to the world. I think you are a wonderful person and wonderful to your fans.

Risa,

I definitely knew EXACTLY who you were. I scanned the audience on the first number to find you and found you right away. Believe me, I felt horrible that I didn't get to see you beforehand. I went out before the show and didn't see anyone at the door I came out of. I almost went to meet and greet just to see you, but I knew I had a 6:30 wake up this morning...I didn't get home till 2am as it was. I'm sorry...I feel bad. But I have a feeling we'll get to hang out sometime in the future at a Chris Sligh show.

Amanda,

So good to see you. You look great with the new haircut. I almost said something about you from the stage, but decided against it just b/c I didn't know if you wanted everyone to know what you were going through...I know some people wouldn't want for 10,000 people to know their struggle with cancer, so I decided to protect your privacy...hope that was the right choice.

Anyway, love you guys,
Chris

I'll see if I can figure out how to put the link to the shirt I did on cafepress up. It either needs the addition of a picture, or jewels help. I think I needed larger crystals, but I got what Michael's had that night, as I was last minute Susie! I think it would look good on a darker shirt with lighter writing as well, but again, I was doing a rush job. And that particular style shirt ran big on me. But it was a nice quality ladies Hanes shirt. Risa

Again, thanks for your efforts to see us. Nashville isn't that far from LR, so I hope some of your first concerts will be within driving distance of home. I'll be there for sure! (I'm SO tempted to go to New Hampshire with Carmen! Little inner voice of reason needs to kick in now! LOL)

And let me tell you, you were positively precious to Amanda from the stage, and she was giddy with excitement.

Thanks to the nice comments about the post I did today. I guess one's response to Endings varies with personalities. Some people jump at a chance for change. It just depends, eh? In a way it just feels like Graduation Day coming in what, 8 shows. Not bad, just bittersweet.

DJ, Risa -

I had posted similar thoughts right after my concert in late August - that we were not just fans, but were also his friends and his advocates. I hope he feels the same way, too.

Definitions of friend on the Web:

a person you know well and regard with affection and trust; "he was my best friend at the university"
ally: an associate who provides assistance; "he's a good ally in fight"; "they were friends of the workers"

acquaintance: a person with whom you are acquainted; "I have trouble remembering the names of all my acquaintances"; "we are friends of the family"

supporter: a person who backs a politician or a team etc.; "all their supporters came out for the game"; "they are friends of the library"

a member of the Religious Society of Friends founded by George Fox (the Friends have never called themselves Quakers)
wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

Friendship is a type of interpersonal relationship that is found among humans and among animals with rich intelligence, such as the higher mammals and some birds. Individuals in a friendship relationship will seek out each other's company and exhibit mutually helping behavior.

This has just been quite the tour. It's nice to know the Idols are so so loved by all of us, each with their own loyal, awesome community. Sometimes I wish I had a diagram of the cross-pollinators. What am I--a Fro-Fanjaya?? hahaha Chriljaya is pretty apt. Amanda is Fro-Cake? What's a cake without fro-sting? oh that was bad, I'd better stop. Chris, hope to see you this weekend!!!

Sorry I haven't posted but i had a major computer/ internet crash. so I am sitting here at our local library trying to catch up with everything.
Risa and Amanda I am glad you guys had a great time. Risa just love your pictures especially your shirt. I like have got to have one of those!! So toally cool!!

Aletha,
All I can say is "yeah! yeah!" I am now doing the happy dance for you! You go to that concert and you have a great time!!!

Thoughts on friendship versus fan. I have actually written something along these lines in my blog. It is quite lengthy for me. Lori knows how much I hate to type because I have dyslexia whenever I get near a keyboard. Anyway, The title of my blog is "Why am I a Chris Sligh fan?" (As soon as my computer is fixed, I will post it, as of now it is saved in my draft section) I really gave this subject a lot of thought after the reporter bombarded me with all those questions in DC.
And basically I came to the conclusion that I am really not a fan after all. Risa is right-- all of us here feel more like we are friends and hopefully Chris looks at all of us the same way.
The friendships that have been formed here on this blog are just amazing. I have been very privilaged to get to meet many of you and I have had the opportunity to get to talk to many of you by phone as well. I have heard many other folks comment on how great the Fro Patro People are. And I have to agree with them. I look at it like this, I think Chris attracts these sort of friends- the kind of people who are loyal, kind and would do just about anything for a friend or stranger. We might not be the largest fan group and Lord knows we are not the youngest but I think the majority of Chris's fans are like Chris- We truly care about each other and our fellow man. Ok, enough of my rambling. If you get a chance to check my blog in the next couple of days, read it. i was able to say it better there than here.

I changed my sign off to SIOF- Sligh Is Our Friend. Cause I know that all of us feel that way in our heart.

Carmen~Thanks for your comment. I also agree that I have met some of the nicest people I could ever imagine. I have met a couple & have talked on the phone to a few more. I don't really know if I'm friends with everyone here since I tend to distance myself and sometimes feel as if people don't like me (though that's probably not true), but I try to contribute as much as possible as opposed to in the early beginning of the blog where I was quiet. As for posting on the fansite, I can't really, because I have a Mac and for some reason the site always freezes up my browser. I try, though.

I'm glad everyone is having such fun concert experiences. Mine was great and when I think back to it, I get kinda sad knowing it's been almost a month ago.

I also have a Mac, and the fansite never works for me either! So I can't post there, either... kinda a bummer.

HstryQT said...

Cathy I love the "peepets." We remind me of my mom and her sisters - we lovingly call them the "hens" and when things get going it's all "oh the hens are clucking again!" That's how I feel we are. lol.

I'm very thankful for the friendships I've made through the Fro Patro - and there have been MANY! It's truly been a blessing as I've made the move away from Virginia and my family and friends - the Fro Patro doesn't have geographic boundaries, and I'm so thankful for that!

Lori :)

risalea said...

HMMMMM, does that mean Chris can't access the fansite when he's on his Mac?

OK, this is a change of subject, but, is there any way to have one of Chris's songs as a ringtone?

Carrie said...

That's what I've been trying to say forever now because I know some people were upset he never visits the fansite, but I realized it could be because of the specs of it. I use the Safari browser regularly because it's the Mac default and I have to always switch over to Firefox to even get the fansite to load.

I know there are some sites where you can upload music to and it sends it to your phone so that you can set it as a ringtone. I'm not sure where, though, since my phone is pretty much the only in in existance that doesn't allow me to do that.

Carianne said...

Try www.Mobile17.com
I've never used it before, but my sister uses it all the time and sends ringtones to my phone for me. I love it!

For Carrie, Carianne, and anyone else who is having trouble accessing the fansite -

Please email me with a complete description of the problem - the computer you use, the browsers that work and the ones that don't work, and tell me exactly what happens when you try to access the site (what screen or error messages you get, etc.).Does it happen before you get to the first screen, or when you try to access a specific page within the site? Was it always this way? If not, when did you first start having trouble? Anything you can tell me about the problem would be helpful. I will try to get it resolved.

Oh Amanda, that was very sweet. Heart touching, yes. You are a sweet soul however, and compassion is not hard to find, for one like you that just wants to love people. Don't let the disease or pain conquer that ever. You keep fighting, and keep shining. Sweet souls like you make the world a better place, and make the rest of us try just a little harder!

As for the "good-christian" thing, I agree it's a work in progress thing. As soon as you are saying you ARE one, you'd better start your journey over again! LOL No one is perfect, and sure as heck not me. All any of us can do is sincerely try.

To Chris Sligh,
From GDA,

The following seems worth bringing uniquely to your attention.

Christ & U2: U2charist

Passing St. James Episcopal Church in Upper Montclair, New Jersey got quick look at a banner for U2charist, did a search and discovered the follow.

“Welcome to the latest worship trend in mainline Protestant churches - the U2charist. The name suggests what it's all about - combining a traditional liturgy including the eucharist, or communion, with the music of the Irish rock group U2, known for its nontraditional Christianity. The services are also notable for their emphasis on the ONE campaign against global poverty and disease, causes in which U2 is heavily involved.
What started at an Episcopal church in Maine as an experiment has now gone global, with U2charists being held from San Francisco to New Zealand.”

Source: The Ledger (Lakeland Florida) - http://www.bread.org/press-room/news/page.jsp?itemID=30464839

“A U2Charist (also spelled eU2charist) is a communion service, or Eucharist, accompanied by U2 songs in lieu of traditional hymns and sometimes as part or all of the service music. The music can be played from a CD or, in less common cases, performed by a live band.
The U2charist was initially started in the Episcopal church but has been adapted by several other denominations. It is typically a liturgical service (including communion) that features the music of the rock band U2 and a message about God's call to rally around the Millennium Development Goals. The U2charist is held by supporters to be a great opportunity to reach out to people in their congregations and larger communities, especially young people, with U2's messages of global reconciliation, justice for the poor and oppressed, and the importance of caring for your neighbor. Bono, U2's lead singer, has been a particularly vocal proponent of the Millennium Development Goals, and has been proclaimed as a global MDG ambassador. The U2charist seeks to raise awareness of the MDGs and call people worldwide to a deeper faith and engagement with God's mission.”

Nail polish remover itself should work just make sure it doesn't cause the dye in the jeans to run. You can also try and freeze the nail polish with an ice cube an then scrape it off with a dull knife. If those don't work then you can get pure acetone from a hardware store and soak it but be aware that it's very flammable so you'll have to wash it a few times until you're sure the smell is completely out.

Are you guys doing the countdown? Only 7 more shows to go! While it's been fun, I'm ready for it to be over, so we can start planning our attendance at Chris's own concerts!

So, WHERE IN THE WORLD IS CHRIS SLIGH? Huntington, West Virginia is the place. Huntington has a population of just over 49,000, but is part of a larger metropolitan area of over 280,000. It is a medical/college community, as two regional hospitals are the main employers, and the area has the presence of Marshall University.

On November 14, 1970, a chartered Southern Airways McDonnell-Douglas DC-9 jet transporting 75 Marshall University football players, coaches, staff, and supporters crashed just short of the Tri-State Airport in adjoining Ceredo, West Virginia. Everyone on board was killed.

A movie titled We Are Marshall, starring Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox, was released locally on December 12, 2006, and nationally on December 22, 2006. The movie depicts the aftermath of the aviation disaster for the families and university.

That's it for now...I'm headed to a Razorback Watch Party. Risa

West Virginia has a reputation of being one of the poorer states in the Union. One of it's major industries is coal mining.
It was originally part of Virginia but early during the Civil War broke away because it's sympathies were with North not with the south as the rest of Virginia was.
The southern part of the state has differing food traditions, there unlike the northern part you are more likely to find Sweet Tea offerred.*
Senator Robert Byrd did an excellent job in get the home base for Coast Guard located and built there. Quite a coup for a land locked state.

How do these folks come up with these things? Beatles/Monkees in the same video singing together--awesome! : ) I used to be in love with Davy Jones when I was in elementary school.

GDA, I have never heard of the U2charist movement before your post here. I hesitate to comment without more knowledge, but that's never stopped me before. : ) While I'm all for trying things to get young people interested in Christ and the church, I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with this kind of worship service. (I'm a member of the church of Christ, a pretty conversative, non-liturgical kind of church). I think Bono and U2 are admirable for the causes they have worked for, just don't know how I would feel about making the service as much about them as it is about Christ. Don't know if that makes sense.

And thank you for adding info for Where in the World? I was in a hurry today and your info was much more interesting than mine!

Take care, Risa

Funny stuff.

Loved the Monkees as a kid (5 yrs old when they started) and older teen too. Did NOT love the Beatles but greatly appreciate and love a lot of their music.

Last night I went to our church coffee shop where The BeTalls were playing. 5 guys from our church (all over 6 foot) performing Beatles music. Most of the lyrics were not changed or Christianized which surprised me a bit. But the band was GREAT and it reminded me how fun Beatles songs really were/are. Had a GREAT time!

Also, I have the coolest church in the world!

Am pretty sure we'd NEVER have a U2charist though. What in the world???? :o)

Yeah, I've heard about the U2charist. I'm not sure what I think about that. I've never been a part of a church that does the Eucharist, anyway, but I guess that doing that is no different than using modern music with worship lyrics like the style of church I go to. I don't think it's the songs used that make worship holy, it's the worship that makes it holy.

That's just my very uneducated take on it.

Well, last night I was the first to miss a performance because of sickness (Sanjaya forgot to come out on Life Is a Highway once). I did not do Typical, though I did do everything else (well, I also didn't do the choruses of "Crazy"). I've felt pretty bad the last 4 days, so please keep me in your thoughts....it sucks to be this close to the end and get sick. However, I did get two shots from a doctor yesterday in my butt, and I think it's clearing my sinuses out a little, so that's good. Now, if I can get my voice back.

Anyway, care a lot about you guys,
Peace and love,
Chris

Eucharist literally means to give thanks. It is the most important aspect in the Catholic Mass because it re-presents Our Lord and Calvary.
Life, death and resurrection. It is very sacred and most Holy to Catholics and has been for almost 2000 years. If you read the earliest church fathers the Eucharist is the central theme.

St. Justin Martyr who also gave his life for Christ, as his name implies. His Apologies are considered the most important of the 2d century Christian writings of the Fathers of the Early Church he speaks of the Eucharist about 155 A.D.:

For we do not receive these as common bread and common drink; but just as Jesus Christ our Savior, having been made flesh by the word of God, had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so also we have learned that the food over which thanks has been given by the prayer of the word which comes from him, [see 1 Cor 11: 23-26; Lk 22; 19] and by which are blood and flesh are nourished through a change, is the Flesh and Blood of the same incarnate Jesus.

When it speaks of "sect"s. If it referring to the time of year where the priests of that sect come together and then one goes in and offer a sacrifice to God in the Holy place? I don't mean sect as in a particular time of the year, I mean it as the priests IN that sect.

I'm just a little unclear on this.
