9-11

Today is the anniversary of that sad day 6 years ago.

I remember I had worked till about 3 in the morning the night before, so I was fast asleep when my best friend called me. He told me to turn on my tv. Unfortunately at the time I didn't have a tv. So, my roommate and I got in our car and drove over to Circuit City and literally sat in shock as we saw the 2nd plane hit. Then in utter disbelief as the towers came down. I didn't cry, but I remember just sitting down on the floor of Circuit City, people walking past me in and out of the store, me staring at the tv with my roommate.

Anger, frustration at being helpless, fear that by some chance I knew someone marred by this tragedy...it was a day I'll never forget.

I think that this is that moment that everyone from this generation will hold on to and remember where they were when it happened for the rest of their lives. My parents and the generation before this do that with JFK. Sure, JFK seemed to hold the hearts of a nation...but 9/11 went straight at the heart of a nation.

I don't think the answer is war. I don't think the answer is hatred of a nationality or people. The answer is in understanding that this world is a dirty place. There is none good, no not one. It is by the grace of God alone that we are able to live in America, but it does not make us superior. It makes us lucky. We should defend ourselves, but love our enemies.

But most importantly, we must remember.

badpacifist-- Thank you for supporting what the Mass is really supposed to be about.

The whole topicline strikes me as sort of heretic, to be honest. We aren't talking about a pop-music infused service,a one-time concentrating on a group's contributive thoughts, but rather *incorporating* U2 and Bono's take on things...and man's opinion and representation of doing good should NOT be put alongside Jesus's. Mass/church services are supposed to be about God, and putting Him in us...not Bono.

Just saying, since gda is pushing the topic.:-( Religion is not something that people should bend and twist to fit their creative pleasings. It's not fan-fic.

rosalee said...

There are videos about U2charist on Youtube, but to tell you the truth, hearing these other people sing U2 just made me want to cringe.....(lol)

I find it very interesting to listen to other people's beliefs and I feel that everyone is entitled to believe, (or not believe) whatever they want to. Not everyone thinks or worships in the same way, and that's their right.

GDA, why don't you copy some of that nice Nesmith/Monkees stuff you emailed me about yesterday over here? I think we could use a little "Propinquity" around here right now.

Further consideration made me elect to delete an earlier post as it carried other things that intended, even with disclaimers.

The U2charist thing was curiousity as within the framework of Roman Catholicism it simply wouldn't even be considered.
I couldn't imagine how the songs listed that I knew the words to would work in context.

I think it is time to introduce a new topic under a new heading.

Chris - hope you are feeling better today.

Rosalee - I have a Mac and I have no problem accessing the fansite, can't upload some things though and having trouble posting my pics from the concert. I think it is because I am stupid - lol. It's my goal for this week! Posting pics not being stupid.

Chris-

I was very sad you couldn't do your solo, but you rocked Thanks for The Memories, Life is a Highway, Hey Jude, and everything else sooo amazingly well. You were definatley making eye contact with us during hey jude haha we were so excited. Anyways I reallly hope you feel better and thanks for an amazing night! I'm in the process of putting all my pictures into a slideshow- I got some really good ones!

Hope my fellow fro patroers have had a great weekend!

Chris I feel so bad! Get well soon! I heard Blake is sick now, too? You all need some major rest and soup. If I could bring it to you, I totally would. (Just had chicken noodle soup homemade last night too.) I guess I'd be lying if I wasn't a little worried about if you'd miss last nights show or not.

A wise man once said, having a MAC is like having a car that can only access 10% of the roads.

Hey now, I take offense to that one, Norman! At least my mac isn't full of spyware and viruses. :p

Are these the most comments ever under one blog? And have we ever gotten so far from the original subject? (Ok, dumb question, we always get away from the original subject! LOL)

But we can't leave until we do:
WHERE IN THE WORLD IS CHRIS SLIGH? (and aren't you glad you only have to endure this one and 4 more, cause they are in NH for 2 shows!)

Well, he's in Hampton, VA! (and hopefully feeling better and not in some doctor's office somewhere!)
Hampton is an independent city in Virginia, and therefore not part of any Virginia county. It is on the southeast end of the Virginia Peninsula, bordering on Hampton Roads and Chesapeake Bay. Population is around 146,000. Hampton hosts Fort Monroe, Langley Air Force Base, NASA Langley Research Center, the Virginia Air and Space Center, and features a wide array of business and industrial enterprises, retail and residential areas, historical sites, and miles of waterfront and beaches.

The former Native American community of Kecoughtan, settled in 1610 in the Virginia Colony, forms the basis for Hampton's claim to the oldest continuously occupied English settlement in North America. Hampton had the misfortune to be burned during both the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War. "Contraband" slaves (formerly owned by Confederates and under a degree of Union protection) built the Grand Contraband Camp, the first self-contained African American community in the United States. A number of modern-day Hampton streets retain their names from that community.

Steve Earle, a country singer/songwriter hails from Hampton, as well as several sports personalities.

FYI Chris--you'll be happy to know I don't plan to continue WHERE IN THE WORLD when you start your solo concert tour! : )

Carrie said...

I know I feel kinda bad getting away from the original subject since it's something so... serious. But I also know that every blog tends to stray so it's probably okay.

Marleybone -

What browser do you use? I just talked to Kay and she said that Internet Explorer and Firefox are the best browsers right now for the fansite. When she gets her Joomla (web development software) updates, she's hoping that these types of problems will be corrected.

Where are you trying to upload your pictures to? There may be a size limitation - you may have to resize your pics first......

Unknown said...

10% of roads I say!!

If people whine enough, mac users might get the privilege to refresh their browsers. Or maybe *undo*. Who knows! Maybe one day, mac users will be able to right click....but that's being a bit hopeful.

Use firefox. That way you're not selling your soul to IE. Opera is pretty nice if you want a decent alternative. But whatever you do, don't use Safari. I have a friend who used Safari once, ten months later he tested positive for massive confusion and frustration.

However, I think it's a pretty big break through for MACs to support games like World of Warcraft and counterstrike. Otherwise they'd be just the modern version of the c-64.

Carrie said...

I can do all of those things with my Mac. :)

As for gaming, well I don't play games, really. I have The Sims 2 on here for Mac, but that's about it.

risalea said...

Uh, oh, I think Chris may have something to say about this line of conversation! : )

(hiding behind her Microsoft Windows based PC with IE and AOL at that!)

Carrie said...

Seriously I've used a PC forever and when in graphic design school we had to use Macs for that, but always had a PC at home. Then last year I got a Mac laptop and I will never go back to PC again. Everyone who hates on Macs are so missing out haha. Plus there's so much capability to run windows and everything on them if you even wanted to these days.

Marley said...

GDA - thanks for the words of encouragement. Positive motivation - yes that works for me.

Rosalee - I use Firefox. IE just doesn't work - never did see Idols on Wall Street. I'm working with photobucket - first time - see how this blog teaches old dogs new tricks. Will get it right.

Iknowiam - you are probably right but I get my laptop from work, so it is free and free is good - lol.

And Risalea - I for one will be sad to see "Where in the world" end. You may not be off the hook. I mean Chris is always going to be somewhere!!

rosalee said...

Marleybone -
Let me know if you run into problems. I used Photobucket for the first time to load my concert pics.

And now a reminder. Buried deep down in the forums is that thread that I started a while back - "Name That Album". It's under Chris Sligh/General Discussion/Name That Album. This was started before Chris posted his new demos on his Myspace site. I was hoping that we could resurrect this thread and get inspired to come up with some more creative titles for his new CD, now that we've heard some new candidates for the CD. We have a few suggestions already, but I'd like to present him with more. So I'm tossing this ball into the air and I hope people will keep it in motion.....

HstryQT said...

Norm you're stomping on Chris' heart as you speak, do you realize this? I don't think you realize he uses a Mac or you wouldn't keep continuing your anti-Mac rant :). (But don't I know more than anyone you and your ways?? haha. All in fun Norm, all in fun). Oh and to answer your previous question, I have reasons to prefer a boy and a girl - I just can't decide. Which is good I guess.. means I won't be disappointed. :)

Carrie - don't get me started on Sims2! It's my weakness.

**Thanks to all who commented on my blog and put up with my ramblings :). I love you ladies!**

More in the morning!

Why do weekends fly by? It sucks! I'm still trying to get used to getting up early 3 days a week for classes. Work is fine because I don't start until 2:30 but class days suck.

Hi, Chris--So sorry to miss you backstage this evening in Charlottesville. I understand you're still trying to kick the bug. You sounded terrific tonight, and I waved a lot from row 3! Thanks for everything. I'll try to post some pics to the fansite tomorrow.

ChrisSligh said...

GirlyGirl,

I'm glad you got to meet everyone. While I'm getting over this cold thing, I'm trying to stay away from more bugs. I think I've just about kicked it, plus we get a day off today (Monday), so I think by the Hampton show, I'll be good.

So sorry to have missed you though. How was your meeting Sanji? Good I hope. I know you're a Fanjaya, but I hope there a little place in your head for a fro.

Anyway, thanks to all you guys for being so great.

Today was a rough day for personal reasons...some close friends of mine are having some struggles...anyway, keep me in your thoughts and prayers, if you would.

Amanda, glad you got to hang with Phil's family. Was it his wife and kids or other family?

Peace and love,
Chris

There's so much to comment on this morning!

Girlygirl- thank you for texting me back because I was all anxious while out at dinner with friends and they were like "Why are you so antsy??" :) Glad you had a good time and I can't wait to see the pics; I was there in spirit! :)

Amanda- taking my early bday wishes off of Facebook and sending them (now belated) to you here :). What a fantastic day! That's so exciting to hear.

Tawny- you're in that same phase of birthday-dom that I'm in. I think after you hit 21 you start to stop counting and birthdays aren't fun anymore. I've been known to go, "I'm uhhh...22." (completely just not remembering how old I am) and then I'll get the response, "LORI YOU'RE 23!!" lol. It's easy to forget. I don't know what I'll do when I'm 24 soon. Happy early early birthday to you though :).

Chris- Lots of prayers for you and your friends. I hope you can still enjoy your day off. Will you be staying in Virginia today? I hope you're enjoying the best and most beautiful (and historic) state around! Can you tell I miss it?

It's definitely that time of year again where everyone starts getting sick. I ended up falling asleep while on my laptop last night around 11 and wasn't even tired, so that right there tipped me off that I'm on my way to getting sick. I'm also that person who ran out the door this morning with wet hair so that I could get a decent parking spot before class, so it's probably my fault more than anything. In my lecture hall today, everyone was coughing, sneezing and sniffling and all I could think was "Oh, great." Luckily, I don't have to go out and sing for uh, anyone. But I do have a big project due today so I can't sleep.

Lori,FYI, birthdays are still fun after 21. And I have a little secret.....what you do is add ten years to your age. Instead of 23, you say, "oh, I'm 33." And the other person goes, "You're kidding right! You look GREAT for your age!" heehee

Whoops, got to hit the road...a meeting this morning. Later, all! Risa

The movie that use various rock stars famous in the 70s sing Beatle songs that were mated to documentary footage from World War II.

Hey GDA!

I HAVE THAT DOUBLE ALBUM!!! Another oddity from the mid-seventies. I never saw the movie. I haven't listened to it in years (actually, more like decades). We still have 2 working turntables here, so I can still play it, if I want to. Do you have a copy?

Did you listen to that rarity that I left for Amanda on the fansite?

Say, would anyone be interested in playing a new game? I've been thinking about this one since Chris put his demos up. OK - this is the premise:

Mainstream music has typically shied away from religious topics. However, there have been some exceptions.

Name a MAINSTREAM song with RELIGIOUS OVERTONES that became a HIT.

I'll start it off with a few:

- Let it Be - Beatles
- My Sweet Lord - George Harrison
- Spirit in the Sky - Norman Greenbaum

I know that you'll have something to say about this, GDA....

HstryQT said...

rosalee said...

Yeah - let it count. But it has to be a HIT.

rosalee said...

It should come out of the Mainstream country music side. I understand that there is a whole other branch, called Christian country music, and that's a separate topic in itself. We're talking about exceptions to the mainstream, here.

rosalee said...

Mainstream, as being defined as something accepted by the general public.

risalea said...

HMMMM, you know every country song talks either about God, trains, mama, drinking, or cheating (or thinking about cheating). LOL

I think country songs may make it too easy. I even found an article talking about religion in country songs:

Unknown said...

"HMMMM, you know every country song talks either about God, trains, mama, drinking, or cheating (or thinking about cheating). LOL" -Risalea

Man if I ever said something like that, Lord knows I'd have everybody up in arms about it.

Just like the MAC thing. I hope you all know I'm just kidding around. I have nothing against MACs or their users.

Carrie said...

Thanks everyone who looked at my photography. I'm not very good at taking compliments I guess because everyone has been telling me how great it is and I just don't know. But thank you!

Also, good Norman because I was going to have to throw down if you made fun of my precious Mac one more time.

Unknown said...

MACs suck..

-Norman

risalea said...

Norman, when you get older you can get by with more. : )

And I love country music. I'm married to a good old country boy, so I have no choice. LOL

Since country is still in the running, how about...
Jesus, Take the Wheel
There's Holes in the Floor of Heaven
Three Wooden Crosses
A Few Questions
When I Get Where I'm Going
My Town
Country is FULL of religious references, some subtle, some more obvious.

Unknown said...

Amen to that Risa.

Country is alright with me, really. Willie Nelson is the man.

To Risalea, Chris, & Norman
From GDA,

Ralph McTell is mostly folk with Blues but did do some country.

Ralph McTell - Father Forgive Them

Jesus was a man who lived among men
Til he got betrayed by one of them
And surely that must have been the biggest sin
But in his final hour he even forgave him
And what he asked you then, well I now ask you too
Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.

For they too have their cross to bear
In your love, please let them share
For Jesus would have understood and brought them home to you
And what he asked you then, well I now ask you too
Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.

Now most of us are troubled and cannot understand
Anything that doesn't fall into our scheme or plan
But we have made the rules and we must share the blame
For it's we who make outsiders and we who call them names
So while we're praying for them what we really ought to do
Is say: Father, forgive them, but please forgive us too.

Carmen -

Yeah - "Put Your Hand in the Hand" is a good one. That was originally by Ocean in the early 70's. That reminds me of some others(maybe):

Joy to the World - Three Dog Night

(There is controversy as to if the lyrics were just nonsensical, or if there was some meaning: (Jeremiah (the Prophet?); "king of the world" (God?))

Think of certain Gospel songs that were popular all around -

Oh Happy Day
People Get Ready - The Impressions

Others were influenced by gospel - Paul Simon - Loves Me Like a Rock
Queen - Somebody to Love

What about others like Led Zeppelin? (Stairway to Heaven)
There are differing interpretations of that song. Again, some people say the lyrics are nonsensical while others read religious meaning into them.

Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton
also has religious overtones...

Let's find some more...

OK, either you guys are really too nice to point out my mistakes or you don't read WITWICS anyway! I was getting ready to do his next show, which is Hampton, and realized I did it for Sunday, which was supposed to be Charlottesville. (Poor Chris, he probably didn't know where he was! LOL) So here is some info on that city, and we'll pick back up with Baltimore for the 19th.

Charlottesville is an independent city located within the confines of Albemarle County. It was named for Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the wife of King George III of England.

In 2004, Charlottesville was ranked the best place to live in the United States in the book Cities Ranked and Rated by Bert Sperling and Peter Sander. Sperling and Sander ranked the cities based on cost of living, climate, and quality of life. Charlottesville is best known as the home of the University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson. The city is also known for Jefferson's Monticello, his renowned mountain-top home which attracts tens of thousands of tourists every year.

Charlottesville played a part in the Revolutionary War, but unlike most of the rest of Virginia, was spared the brunt of the Civil War.

Charlottesville is close to the Shenandoah National Park. As a college town, Charlottlesville has a significant liberal community that coexists with the university students in creating an art scene, music scene and intellectual environment. The city is home to numerous music venues, bars, and coffee shops that cater to the various populations.

I'm in a Beatles frame of mind so I will venture up a few songs w/religious overtones - though not necessarily Christian.

My Sweet Lord

Fool On The Hill
(dont' know if it was just rumor but I've heard so many times the Fool was supposed to be God.)

I think someone already mentioned Let It Be.

Imagine - A song I just DETEST!
(anti-religious but still about religion nonetheless).

To Rosalee,
From GDA,

The Beatles - Let It Be
One of Paul McCartney’s songs which his brother Michael McCartney (AKA Michael McGear) often has referred to as “The Mother Mary Song”. Their mother Mary Mohin McCartney was a nurse & midwife. Michael’s first solo album “Woman” has photo of their mother on the front cover in her nurses uniform which makes her look like a nun.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woman_(Mike_McGear_album)

George Harrison - My Sweet Lord. Harrison got sued for this because so many people thought it sound too much like “He’s So Fine” by The Chiffons. He refers to the law suit in the song “This Song”

Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky. The Stovall Sisters who did backing vocals on Norman’s original released their own version of the song which sounds like a Gospel song.
Wikipedia url: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirit_in_the_Sky

Bobby Bare - Drop Kick Me Jesus Through The Goalpost of Life
Words: http://bertc.com/dropkick.htm

XTC - Dear God. Andy Partridge’s rant at God, which if written today probably would have something on 911.
Words: http://www.lyricsdepot.com/xtc/dear-god.html

Bob Dylan - I Shall Be Released
Words: http://www.bobdylan.com/songs/released.html
Or http://www.allspirit.co.uk/released.html

Peter, Paul & Mary - Tramp on the Street (Grady and Hazel Cole)
Words: http://www3.clearlight.com/~acsa/introjs.htm?/~acsa/songfile/TRAMPONT.HTM

The Who - Pure and Easy (Pete Townsend)

Just listened to "Father Forgive Them". I really liked it. Great lyrics and I like McTell's style.

I'm also a Micheal Nesmith fan and like to read your comments on him. Has been a long time since I listened to him and so I pulled him up on Rhapsody the other night and have been enjoying him ever since.

Are you into John Stewart at all??

Hey, GDA! What timing huh?

Took a quick gander at kissthisguy and will return when I'm not so sleepy. But just a quickie: Ever read Dave Barry's book on misheard lyrics? Could be titled Book of Bad Songs, not sure.

The funniest one was from Beach Boys "Help Me Rhonda". First line went: since you put me down there's been owls puking in my bed". I laughed for a few days on that one. I still don't know what the real lyrics are.

I need to have more faith in my memory again! Not being in the classroom anymore has me second guessing myself.

You covered all of the Charlottesville stuff I was going to say. Except to add that Dave Mathews started in Charlottesville - Virginian's are very proud of that fact.

Oh, and Monticello is beautiful! Now you have me digging up my old pictures! :) Here's me chaperone-ing some of my old students...

Anyway, I'm "adept" now according to the quiz - I have a few thousand more points before I catch up with you (you're "stud" level - haha!).

Question for Chris:

How hard is it for a Christian artist to get chosen for the WoW Hits cd? and how can we make sure that you're on WoW 2008? Do you know when during the year they choose the songs for it? Will it be before or after your new cd is released?

I have a feeling I might need to repost this question when a fresh blog appears. But I've been wondering and I didn't want to forget to ask :).

I'm still trying to figure out the radio stations and such in Indy. KLOVE is the Christian station here and I'm confused about if it's broadcast nationally or locally. If I call in and ask for Hero, will I be talking to someone in California? KLOVE seems pretty big based on their website but I could just be confused.

gdahimself said...

Lori,

Good luck, looks like it is part of a large organization if the following is any indication:

http://www.klove.com/Music/StationList.aspx

Large chains usually don't allow much room for local taylored playlist.

risalea said...

I was just going to say, I believe we have K-Love here, too, so it must be national.

FYI, for those that are interested in these things, we have surpassed the 288 responses on the blog entry when we thought Chris was leaving the blog until the AI Tour was over, and we're about 92 short of the number when he stopped blogging when he went on the show.

So post away, people! : )

Clarissa/GDA -

I listened to a few versions of Propinquity, and GDA's version seems to be the nicest.

Why do these Nesmith videos (ex. Rio) remind me of some McCartney videos? (like Coming Up, or excerpts from Give My Regards to Broadstreet (Ballroom Dancing))

I guess it has something to do with the style of the big production numbers they did back in the early 1980's...

Sorry Lori, im think only blaker girls would really get that one right. Cause its Kristi. But wow, i stumped someone that made me happy. lol. Yea im back to no life and playing idol trivia.

So i have a cute story. My niece (my friends little girl) told me last night she got a build a bear and named it Hannah Rhea after Hannah Montana and Me. Then she got a heart to put in it, she got the one that one dollar goes to a cancer charity she made her wish and it was for me to feel all better. She is 5 she could of wished for anything and thats what she wished for. Amazing isnt it.

Its bad though to make her mind we dont have to threaten her with no toys or stuff, its you wont be able to go to St. Jude next time. She straights up quick.

To Rosalee & Risalea,
From GDA,

Bette Nesmith Graham, Michael Nesmith's mother, was a pretty extraordinary lady in her own right and first.
Read her profile at The Gihon Foundation website, which she founded.

http://www.gihon.com/

The introduction:
"Dallas has had its share of outstanding business and professional women, but never has there been anyone else quite like Bette C. Graham. Courageous, bright, innovative, persistent, she proved that a woman could make it in the business world. To invent something is one thing; to market it is another. Bette Graham did both and became famous the world over as the inventor of Liquid Paper, the correction fluid that is a staple among office supplies."

risalea said...

Just in time....WHERE IN THE WORLD IS CHRIS SLIGH?

Baltimore, Maryland is the site of tonight's AI concert. It's population is just over 630,000. The city is a major U.S. seaport, situated closer to major Midwestern markets than any other major seaport on the East Coast. Baltimore is Maryland's largest city and its metropolitan area the 20th largest in the U.S.

The city is named after the founding proprietor of the Maryland Colony, Lord Baltimore in the Irish House of Lords.

During the War of 1812, when the British landed at Sparrows Point, the local residents took up arms and when they had run out of ammunition, they threw pots, pans and anything they could get hold of at the British. They fought to a stalemate at the Battle of North Point after killing the British commander General Ross, who had said upon landing, "We will win this battle or I eat dinner in hell tonight". British reinforcements were not possible thereafter, and their forces subsequently withdrew. The naval engagement inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem "The Star-Spangled Banner," the lyrics to the United States' national anthem. The battle was memorialized in the Battle Monument, which is on the city seal.

Though it was a slave-holding state, Maryland did not secede but remained part of the Union during the Civil War. Slavery was outlawed in Maryland by the state Constitution of 1864. Pro-Southern sentiment led to the Baltimore riot of 1861, when Union soldiers marched through the city. After the riot, Union troops occupied Baltimore, and Maryland came under direct federal administration — in part, to prevent the state from seceding — until the end of the war in April 1865.

Today, Baltimore possesses samples from every period of architecture for over two centuries, and work from many famous architects such as Benjamin Latrobe, John Russell Pope, Mies Van Der Rohe and I.M. Pei.

Baltimore is a top destination for Amtrak along the Northeast Corridor. Baltimore's Penn Station is one of the busiest in the country. In 2005, it ranked 8th in the United States with a total ridership of 910,523.

There's lots more info on Baltimore, but that's all I have time for now. Just two more to go cities to go! Risa

I remember I was about to begin the lesson for my 2nd period 7th grade art class. One of my students told me. I didn't actually grasp what had happened then, as the details were not clear. Later, I got the chance to talk to some adults who were following the situation. I heard about the Pentagon. My brother-in-law attends meetings there on occasion. I had also heard (falsely) that the building my brother-in-law works in had be hit. I couldn't get a hold of anyone in my family, until 5pm. I'm not sure how I kept it together during that day, but I had to.
