David Archuleta - "Crush"

Okay...

So, all season long, I had my doubts about Archuleta.  I thought he had a fine voice, all right, but I just thought he was boring on the show.  On top of that I had real concerns of how he would fit into the landscape of today's music culture.

I just listened to his debut single "Crush".

My initial thoughts are that it is a fine song and any concerns I had about his fitting into today's music business, have been relieved in spades.  He sounds great and I think this is a genuine contender for a hit single!

If you've known me for any certain amount of time, you'll know I have no problem admitting when I was wrong.  On Archie, I was wrong.

And, honestly, I'm glad I was.  I wish him all the luck in the world.

Good for him. I hope he takes it slow and gets a chance to mature properly in the business, without being pushed too much. He has time on his side. He was able to live a fairly normal life before AI an I hope he can find a way to continue this as his career grows.

Carrie said...

I thought the song was corny and I still think that he'll end up like every other second placer but hey, to each his own I guess. I still think hes boring, but if he can fit into the same genre as The Jonas Brothers and the Disney kids then he'll sell because that's what music has become these days. He's just not my cup of tea, but that's fine, I'm sure a lot of people like him.

risalea said...

I think it's great for the audience it's meant for. I had a crush one time, too, on Donny Osmond : ) I think it will be interesting to see what he does in the future. Like badpacificist, I hope he's allowed time to just be a kid. Growing up happens soon enough.

Unknown said...

Just judging from the reactions from the 'tween girls in the audience on AI, I'd say this kid already has a big Disney type following going for him... I say more power to him! We need more of the clean-cut good guy influences on our young generation these days. And he's got a heck of a voice to boot! No where to go but up I'm hopin'.

rosalee said...

It's an age-appropriate song for him. But I think the song itself is a poor man's "No Air". Not as good a song. It is repetitive, but that's not David's fault. At least it shows that he can be a good fit for a contemporary song, as opposed to crooning some ballad.

Alexis Jacobs said...

I was very pleasantly surprised too. While I thought he was very talented, he just wasn't my cup of tea on the show. But I really like this single. Different from what I expected.

DJ in AL said...

He's a cutie patootie to be sure, and has imo a great voice, that said, I can't imagine me buying his music. Then again, I'm OLD!

Risa, as usual, we have one more thing in common. Donny Osmond was my crush back in the day, and David Cassidy too. Man how old are we anyway?

risalea said...

DJ,starting tomorrow, I've decided I'm half my age....so tomorrow I'm 25 1/2. And next year, I'll be 26. Don't you love the new math? : )

DJ in AL said...

Risa,

Works for me! You might have a hard time "selling" it! LOL

Carmen said...

Risa & DJ,
Gotta join with you girls in saying that I was a HUGE Donny Osmond fan and I also was a big Tony DeFranco fan.
David A. reminds me of Donny in some ways in the fact that he is sweet & clean cut. I have often wondered how he would fit in the music business because he has this big ole voice coming from this kid. Then I think about Wayne Newton and he was kind of the same way. A kid with a big ole voice and look what he did-- he became Mr Las Vegas. So I think David A can find his nitch. He has good parents & a great family that are going to help him stay grounded aqnd give him the suport he needs.

Hey...were any of you lovin on Bobby Sherman back in the day?

Anonymous said...

OK I'll bite ....my first crush was Anna Maria Alberghetti when I saw a Jerry Lewis movie called Cinderfella. When I looked up how to spell her name most of the pictures were in black and white. At least my music is young and yet sometimes it mocks me.
Weezer was just playing the new song on the radio that starts....They say i need some rogaine to put in my hair
Work it out at the gym to fit my underwear

Carianne said...

haha funny thing, I wasn't around when Donny Osmond was a "hearthrob", but I LOVE him now (now that he's not cool to like anymore lol)!

As for my first celebrity crush, I can't really relate to you guys... Mine was Zac Hanson in 1997. I was 10. *sigh* memories... :p

Carianne said...

oh, forgot to put my two-cents in on Archie's single (not that ANYONE will read it):

I think it's adorable, and could definitely succeed on the radio today. And I certainly hope it does! I think there need to be a few more sweet, clean songs on the radio for young people to listen to.

I've been away but really enjoyed catching up here.

Nice of you Chris to post your best wishes for Archie here and note your slight turnaround.

Haven't heard Crush yet but I'm sure it's pretty good but not something I would buy. More power to him!

Robyn,
I was gonna bring up Bobby Sherman when I read Risa's talk about Donny. Never was into him but Bobby was a whole 'nother matter! LOL
This nostalgic memory also flys to Shaun Cassidy, Parker Stevenson, Micky Dolenz and even Bobby Goldsboro! Oh my.
And just recently started my cougar years with David Cook and Jason Castro. :o)

Rosalee,
So glad to read you posted your concert experience and pics here.
Love the pics bringing Chris into Season 7. You sure get a lot of mileage outta that wonderful fashion accessory!

And I probably won't be here tomorrow SO...Happy Birthday Risa! Do something goodly memorable. I really like your new blog too. Your kiddie picture is a really CUTE touch.

Oh, my gosh yes, I loved Bobby Sherman, especially when he was on that show "Here Comes the Brides". I will add a caveat that I was like 11 when that came on, just old enough to have a mad crush. LOL

Carianne, you are right, it is great to have an artist that you know is going to have songs that you're not afraid for the kids to listen to.

Thank you, Clarissa....hubby is making me one of his famous (he's only made one, but it was delicious) Italian cream cakes. Dang it, I'm never gonna' lose this weight! : ) Well, there's always August 9th!

Randy, I'm glad to know it's not just the girls having these crazy crushes. LOL

Rosalee, can't wait to look at all the clips you found after Bunco tonight.

OK, I'm kind of slow on the uptake...DJ, what do you mean I'll have a hard time selling it? I don't buy that Mary Kay in the gallon size jars for nothin'! LOL

OK, Chris, we've all fessed up...so who was YOUR celebrity crush?

DJ in AL said...

OMG, I forgot Bobby Sherman and Davy Jones, loved them too! I had many crushes.

Risa, you understood perfectly, and hey MK is great stuff but I'm not sure it can make a 50 year old look 25, if it can, send me all you got!

risalea said...

Just wanted to say that "Running Back to You" was a HUGE hit at Bunco. Several commented that they love "Empty Me" and hear it on K-Love. I told them the only requirement was for them to spread the word so that others buy the CD. A couple of my friends there had gotten a copy previously from me and I told them to take the extra and give it to someone who needed some inspiration. So thanks, Chris, for helping me do something I love to do--share your music! Risa

Chris -
I am so glad that you were big enough to admit you were wrong about David. I was a very big fan of yours while you were on Idol but, I lost my faith in you after hearing comments you made about David. David is a genuinely good person with a tremendous amount of talent and I can only hope that more people will start to give him the chance he so obviously deserves. Thank you! By the way...I am from Spartanburg!

Anonymous said...

Chris - takes a big man to admit when they're wrong. I become a big fan the moment he sang SHOP AROUND - oh my word, did I lose my mind! His voice and his humble personality are winners! I am an older fan, and remember the crushes I had in the day on The J5, Donny Osmond, David Cassidy, Bobby Sherman... all those crushes combined don't measure up to the "CRUSH" I now have for all things David Archuleta! Pauler said it best about his second performance (IMAGINE) "YOU-ARE-DESTINED-FOR-SUPERSTARDOM. Amen to that.

EmilyBoo said...

Happy birthday Risa!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, about crushes. I've been a Johnny Depp girl from his 21 Jump Street days. And speaking of the Monkees, even though they were before my time, reruns of their show were on MTV when I was about ten (the time of their 80's reunion, I suppose,) and I had a crush on their young selves (not their reunion selves LOL.) Except Mike Nesmith. I never really liked him.

That reminds me, I have hundreds of older CDs I've never gotten around to putting on my ipod. I have to put my Monkees on there!

Chris, hope you're enjoying CO-one of my favorite states to visit.

Oh, Chris and Candy, as my mother says, "if the good Lord's willing and the creek don't rise" I'm coming to Moore on the 16th. I can't make Ponca City, since it's on Sunday night and I have to work the next day. (darn the things that get in the way of Chris Sligh concerts!)

One last thing--to those of you who were at the picnic--if you remember Lindsay, Amanda's bestfriend who was there, she's having her baby today (great day for a birthday!)-a precious baby boy, Hudson Rhea (middle name after Amanda). Please keep them in your prayers.

Chris you have a myspace message from me re:tomorrow in Indy (yay!!) Looking forward to seeing you!

Still wondering if you're flying or driving from NC tonight/tomorrow. I'm hoping flying because that'd be a LONG drive.

See you tomorrow! :)

Rosalee loved your review and pics - your post at MJs was a bazillion times cooler than mine (I'm still surprised she posted mine!). Great Job - you know you made tons of DC fans salivate at that pic. haha

chamilton said...

Risa,
I wasn't relaly planning on going to the Moore show but plans can change. So, that being said, could you give me some info aboout your trip like are you planning on staying over after the show? Maybe we could catch dinner in OKC or something because I will have to stay the night to catch the Ponca City show that I already have tickets for. That would give me four shows in four months. Watch out Carmen... LOL

Candy

risalea said...

Candy, I knew you were going to PC, but didn't know what you had decided on Moore. I'm kind of flying by the seat of my pants here, (what else is new, no comments, DJ-LOL) but I think a friend of mine from here, Carol, is going with me (VP of the college that was the official water sponsor of the picnic, Chris--LOL), and yes, we will spend the night because it's over a 5 hour drive from here.
(sorry, such a run on sentence!)
Anyway, I'll email you my cell # in case you decide to come.

Deb in TN said...

Risa, speaking of flying by the seat of your pants........LOL

Before I saw "the new math" and how old you "really" are, I had already mailed you my sisters of the traveling pants gift--a one year supply of Depends...LOL...Sorry, I didn't know how old, or young, you really are....LOL....Happy Belated Birthday....

Chris, have a great show in Indy....I wanted to drive up sooooooooooooo bad that it is killing me...my two favorite singers in the world are there--Chris Sligh and Chris Daughtry.....I am just dying here....I just got hired at the Hospital so for the next 30 days it will be a grueling rotation and lots of 12 hour and some night shifts....Indy's just too far a drive for me to get back home and be totally rested up before the new job on Monday morning bright and early...What can I say except that I'm old now and not as young as Risa....LOL

Sing your heart out and try to stay cool....Safe travels, Chris.

Deb in TN said...

Oooops, I did it too....

Archie.......

Ahem......

I think Archie is an adorable boy....so sweet, so positive, so dorky, cute and funny....and, he has a beautiful voice....I wish I could hear "Crush" because I suspect it's a side of Archie we saw little of during AI...After a few weeks on AI, I, too, found him to be in rut and I got bored, or shall I say, less enthusiastic, about his performances...I'm glad you are giving credit where credit is due and that you now have a better opinion and hopes for Archie's success....I'd like to see a great kid have a shot at something he loves to do....I hope you are right about him.

Carmen said...

Candy,
You go girl with those concerts! You and I will have to find one that we can attend together. I am planning on going to the one in Atlanta the end of this month. that will make my 19th concert in 17 months. DJ in AL said...

Happy Sunday!

Risa I hope your Birthday was fabulous and make sure you tell folks I didn't forget your birthday, I would never forget my sista for heavens' sake! Just got back from the mayhem that is "The Longest Yard Sale" which is 654 miles long, starts in Gadsden, AL and ends in West Unity, OH. It's what it sounds like, 654 miles of yard sales. It's physically impossible to cover that many miles in 4 days so you pick a stretch of highway and go as far as you can, least that's what we do. This year we were tremendously blessed with tolerable temps. mid 80's,low humidity and blue skies. Last year, it was mid 90 's, 100% humidity (in other words, typical AL weather) and we nearly didn't survive. The things and the people you see on this trek through the rural South is almost worth the trip by itself. If you are a collector, which I am (born into it) then it can be quite the shopping extravaganza. That is, providing you can wade through the junk and garbage and unidentifiable items you run across. Anyway it's big fun if you get into that kind of thing, which obviously I do.

Doesn't look like I missed a ton, except some Sligh sightings, which as always I'm enormously jealous! Hope all the concert goers weren't disappointed and had a great time!

Chris, wherever you are, I hope you are doing well!

I had so much fun today! I'm sorry we couldnt spend more time with you; the life of a mommy, I guess. But I'm glad that you got to have some quality Teddy time pre-show. I'll be posting pics tomorrow.
The show was great! Sound was definitely better at 3rd and Lindsley but that's just the nature of a small outdoor venue, I guess. I loved seeing you on the piano; it was my first time for that. I loved the set and thoroughly enjoyed myself - you sounded great! My friends had a great time too and loved meeting you. Seems like it'll be forever until I get another show (seeing as who knows when it'll be :) - but I know it'll be soon enough.

Thanks for the great day! and I loved your shout out - I was all about representing the Fro Patro. Even if I was the only one! (Except there was that cool kid wearing the Fro, did you see him??)

Bad news-I had to drive an hour and a half to a VERY small AR town to do a TA today and my 11 yr. old car doesn't have a CD player (I know, dinosaur, but I'm sure those of you with teenagers will appreciate the fact that I'm not buying new until he is out of the house! LOL)
Good news--K-LOVE was playing our man, Chris this morning!

Good news--The Eagles are coming to LR in Sept.
Bad news-The best seats are 157.25!!

Good news--I am definitely going to Moore to see Chris and company this weekend.
Bad news--I can't stay over for Ponca City due to Mon. being the first day of school.
Best news--The tickets are way cheaper than the Eagles! : )

Can't wait!

I'm a little late but as an Archie fan (have been since his Star Search days) I'm glad to see that you now see his appeal in the business. Considering his first single is well, a first AI single.. I really like the song and he sounds great. He's doing really well so far and #1 on itunes from what I heard. He deserves all the success in the world because he's a great kid.

Funny story about giving away Chris's CD:
I had to go to an inservice my boss was doing for my former school district this morning. I had been telling one of my teacher friends,Donna, about Chris and decided I would take her a "happy." So, in I walk with the CD in my hand, and my boss sees it and says, "did you bring that for me?" Uh.....yeah! LOL Actually, I had told her back in May when telling her about the picnic that I was going to get her one, and we just hadn't seen each other with the summer break. She got SO excited, as she had seen Chris's song online somewhere and just loved it and she was like...that's Risa's man. LOL So she got the CD, and I've got to get another one to Donna. Well, just another opportunity to "share the love". And I guess I'm going to have to start either (a)carrying multiple copies with me or (b) bring them in a bag!

Hey Chris,
Are you still playing in Horseheads, NY? It's not on your myspace now so I'm guessing it's cancelled?

:(

Risa -
It never hurts to tuck one away somewhere just in case.
One place I will not be giving any away is at the Ledyard Fair, where he probably will be selling them.

Cathy,
So glad you are home and recuperating and that all reports are favorable.
Praying your recovery is unremarkable and swift.
