Offering

Famed (and incredible) comedien/actor/director Bob Odenkirk called me last week offering me the main guest-starring role in an upcoming HBO pilot starring David Cross (also a comedy genius).  They had actually written the role with Jack Black in mind and apparently immediately thought of me (Bob had apparently watched me on Idol and thought I was funny - in our conversation he actually told me that he loved that I had a sense of irony about the show) to play  the part of one of David's old friends.

Bob sent over the script and it was pretty darned funny...it is actually a great morality tale that is pointed and timeful.  It's gonna be great.  Unfortunately, we were supposed to film in May when I am on tour.  We tried to figure out how to make it work, but unfortunately, it just couldn't work out (and just so there was no confusion - this was not an invitation to audition, this was an actual offer for a part - there's a difference, and I know the difference).

Anyway, I thought that was a very cool honor to have been offered the part...it would have been cool to film for a few days in L.A.  I'm also really looking forward to seeing the show when it airs in the Fall.

That is so cool that they offered you the role! That must have felt amazing! It's nice to know that people in the entertainment world remember what a funny guy you are :)

Carrie said...

Aw, too bad you can't do it but it definitely sounds like an honor to have been considered! This just means that it wasn't meant to happen and something even bigger is on its way!

Hey Chris...I'm trying to connect with you for some radio stuff here in the Upstate on His Radio Z...holla..cale thez.Com

Empty Me is Amazing!

Cathy Storms said...

That is really quite an honor. It's a shame that you can't fit it in somehow. I'm sure that there is going to be plenty of other offers coming your way.

Carrie said...

Okay I'm really amused because so far all the comments are C's. I blame the lack of sleep haha.

risalea said...

This one can count for "C", too. cause my real name is Clarisa. lol

One of these days, one of these fantastic offers is going to work out schedule-wise, but right now, you're doing what you need to, promoting your awesome CD!

OK, got to run...heading to TN tomorrow and of course, I'm still doing laundry!

Aw Chris - I'm so bummed out!

Dr. Bob said...

Even if you can't fit it in, the offer is nice! It means that you are on the radar, which is pretty cool.

rosalee said...

Well, I don't get HBO anyway.

I'm just trying to rationalize this....

EmilyBoo said...

"Well, I don't get HBO anyway."

LOL Rosalee, I was just going to say the same thing.

Congrats on the offer though, Chris! I'm sure more will come along!

DJ in AL said...

Well bummer and bummer! I also don't get HBO, but believe me I would have had it before this aired if you had done it! The only thing I can think of better than seeing you in concert would be seeing you on the tube! Carp, hey, you don't think my timing thing is rubbing off on you do you? LOL

Speaking of timing, I'm still desperately trying to find out if you are going to be in B'ham next week, if you sneak in and don't let me know I'll never forgive you! Ok, well maybe I will, but not for a long time!

Sending you love from DJ in AL (B'ham to be exact!)

Clarisaz,

Risa asked me to tell you we have received your info for the picnic! She is on her way to Nashville and wanted to make sure you knew we had received it, and thanks!

Now if more peeps would follow your lead I would feel a whole lot better about the turn out for the picnic!

David Cross as in Tobias of Arrested Development??? Oh NOOOOO, Chris!!! that must have been so hard to pass up. That guy is brilliant. Waaaah. What an honor to get such an offer, though. Congrats.

DJ,
Thanks, for passing the message along. I'm really getting excited. :o)

And, I just got notice that (after being on the wait list for AI tickets since early last year), my turn has arrived! Just printed off voucher for admission to the dress rehearsal for this coming Tuesday. The live performance show was already full. WHA!!!! Am checking into how cheaply I can make this trip. Overnight to Hollywood and back - alone. I really AM nuts!!

Unknown said...

Slim, life is short. Find a flight and GO!! and have a great good time (and if you see Sanjaya around LA, give him a hug for me)

EmilyBoo said...

I just came from Amanda's site! Other than waking up, she's no better or worse. She has a lot to overcome. I'm praying hard!

DJ in AL said...

Chris-ok, so I feel better!
Thanks man, hey and even if all you have time for is a hug, a pic and an autograph I'll come running! That won't take what, 5 minutes?

Keeping my fingers crossed....

I hope Risa is still able to see Amanda today. Anyone know? Keep praying, folks!

Girlygirl: My husband says same thing however I'm not so sure I can justify spending the money right now. Am checking w/a friend to see if I can stay at her place. Will save hotel $ at least.
If they would just give us 14 day notice I could have gotten a flight for nothing. Drats!

What's the point in bragging about this non-materialization.

I especially "love" how arrogant you are with the following comment: "and just so there was no confusion - this was not an invitation to audition, this was an actual offer for a part - there's a difference, and I know the difference"

Wow, you're really special. I can't believe you know the difference. Way to take the high road for the name of Christ with your music by sticking with CCM.

Carrie said...

It's funny how people take a blog that is meant to keep fans up to date and also be used to write about things on a business standpoint (ie, unlike the adventures blog) and people consider that to be "bragging." Can't win them all, but can't help but wonder why people still stop by now and again to waste their time with negativity.

Unknown said...

don't get me wrong. i'm not hating. i love his music and hope his career the best, but that doesn't mean i have to support his every statement. "celebs" can be called out like the rest of us.

regardless the statement I blocked in quotes it riddled with pride. It really can't be taken any other way.

Carianne said...

slimpickens,

you will have a great time at the dress rehearsal! I know I did when I went! (you know, I've been on the wait list since Season 5 and have never been given an offer of tickets? haha luckily my sister has :P)

Hope you enjoy your trip down here! :)

Anonymous said...

DJ, Cathy & Carianne,
Thanks for the encouragement but I think I've decided to do the responsible thing instead of the fun thing. I'd LOVE to be there for Dolly Parton week. I've followed her for years. But I could go thru all this trouble and expense (mostly expense) and not even get in! There are no guarantees.

And it's not like Chris is gonna be there or anything. :o)
Chikezie is gone now so even less incentive to go.

I'll just keep saving for Nashville in July.

Looking forward to hearing from you, Risa, regarding your day.

Peace to you all,
~clarissaNaz

Anonymous said...

^^ Aww, I wish you could go but as you said, it's not even 100% sure that you can get in even with a ticket. I think just saving up for the picnic is a better idea :)

Chris, sucks you couldn't work it out but of course it's still great to have been offered the part.

Carrie said...

Random fact: a year ago today (march 28) Chris was voted off AI. I can't believe it's been that long already.

HstryQT said...

Congrats on this offer! I know that must be so exciting for you.

I should have an updated pic now; the subject of which is the reason Im not on the blog as much anymore! Lets see if my little man shows up...

HstryQT said...

Ugh. And it didnt of course. Maybe later it'll decide to magically change. Silly Blogspot.

ChrisSligh said...

Nunya,

Sorry you took that statement to be riddled with pride. It has backstory, which you may not have been a part of earlier in this blog's history. I was asked to be in Shrek which did not work out, and people claimed that it had been an audition, not an offer...in this blog I was making it clear that there is a difference. Sometimes in print it's hard to catch context or to "read between the lines"...sorry it came across that way.

Peace and love,
Chris

Cathy Storms said...

Hey, guys. My Blackberry used to let me log on to the blog and now it says it's too big too load. I guess we are too prolific!

I visited with Amanda and her mom on Friday and today and Carmen came up and went, too, on Friday. Amanda was asleep both times, but got to visit with Tammy, her mom. She is such a special lady. Each patient in ICU there has a separate room, and I didn't expect to go in, but we could, after scrubbing and gowning and masking. Tammy appreciates all the prayers and well wishes. I don't want to go into details, but Amanda is very, very sick, and continues to be in need of your prayers. She is definitely a fighter!

I'm off to bed. Night, all! Risa

DJ in AL said...

Nunya,

To back up the explanation Chris gave you, not that he owes you one, but his comment has a ton of back story to it, if you were a regular visitor here it would make perfect sense and you would understand that arrogance has nothing to do with his comment. That said, I'm going to have to respectfully say there was most definitely a different way to take it. And no offense, but hating is exactly how you came across.

But hey you know what, Chris would be the first to say, everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if it doesn't agree with his or ours and BTW you got one thing completely right, Chris is indeed special!

DJ in AL said...

Risa,

Thanks to you and Carmen as well for sharing what you learned about Amanda, my heart breaks for her and her Mom and my prayers go to both. I'm so glad you were able to see her and know that Tammy was grateful.

Sending heartfelt prayers to Amanda and Tammy!

Some of you may have wished you could help Amanda, but didn't know what to do.

I just learned today of a campaign by the Richness (Chris Richardson's fan group) to buy Amanda and her mom a new laptop. Mandy Eames, who helped found the group, had approached Dell, Best Buy, etc. about getting one donated without any luck. So they have set up a paypal account to take donations of any size.

Amanda's laptop has been on its last legs for awhile, and others have had to do their caringbridge updates. The computer is their gateway to the outside world while Amanda is being treated.

Top Five Advice Tips for a Chris Sligh Fan Encounter:

1)Set at least three alarm clocks so you don't oversleep and miss your opportunity! (TIMING, TIMING, TIMING!)

2)Even though you have listened to "Empty Me" ten jillion times and know every word by heart, and your backup vocals sound awesome in the shower, do not break into song at any time. Not a good idea. I wouldn't steer you wrong.

3)Make sure your camera is working before you start to take the picture. (or else you'll get a picture that looks like mine at the NLR AI concert--not a pretty thing!)

4)Don't set the telephoto too close, unless you are fond of nose hair shots (see #3 above)

5)And for goodness sakes, don't stand between DJ and her Sligh...(unless you are fond of being run over!)

LOL, friend! Hope you have a MARVELOUS time in the AM!! Risa

I was driving to class today and listening to our local Christian station, Z88.3, and heard this new song that I thought was really good. I was so excited that I called my sister to tell her, lol. We loved you on AI and I am so happy to hear you on the radio!

So, the bad timing, bad luck Jones saga has finally come to a happy end!!!!!!

Chris, it was amazing to finally get to meet you and frankly a big relief, I was beginning to think it would never happen! Thank you so much for taking the time to take pics before and after your radio appearance and sign my Fro Patro shirt. I hope you weren't too late for the Fox taping.

You are as everyone has said before and as I believed you to be, a very kind man who is generous with his time for his fans. Though I didn't have as long as others have had, I am perfectly happy and will never forget meeting you!

A couple of points about this morning:

1) You've got to dry your hair before you leave the hotel, obviously some fan will touch your hair at some point. LOL

2) You are very, very tall!

3) You smell very good-lucky Sarah!

4) Your performance of In A Moment was stellar! How you can hit every note spot on that early in the morning is a mystery to me. That voice!

5) Jon is very sweet, you could have done alot worse for a roadtrip partner. And so what if he does snore? So do you!(or so everyone says)

6) Rick & Bubba loved you! You can always tell when they have "bonded" with their guest. You were a hit, as evidenced by the phone calls you got while you were on air. I could see the board from where I was standing and it was lit up like a Christmas tree.

7) It's not for everyone that I would get up at 5:00 in the morning and stand in the cold for an hour, but for you, anytime, anywhere!

8) Yes, apparently it is true, Risa and I look very much alike. There are worse things:)

9) Anyone doubting the fact that you love your wife should think again, you so obviously do and its so nice that you take every opportunity to tell the world how much you do. It's lovely to see.

10)You are a shining example of what a Christ follower should look like.

That's my top ten list! If you are ever in B'ham again I am at your disposal. I know where the Cheese Factory is dude!

Safe trip home!

Love to all my fellow Fro Patroers especially those who crossed their fingers for me! I Love ya'll, heck I love everyone today!

for any Stones fans out there, I just saw a prescreening of Shine a Light, and oh MAN, they are incredible. Mick can MOVE like no one else. Gah. Far Away Eyes is a highlight (but evangelicals need to bring their sense of humor), and there are a couple touching solos from Keith Richards; great cameos from Jack White, Buddy Guy, and Cristina Aguilera; and all the big hits are in there. WOOOT. Sorry, this blog may now resume... DJ, I imagine you're feeling just as giddy, okay giddier (sp?)

Chris, just read your EW review. Oh, you hurt my heart....not a fan of Dolly's musically? She's a classic, though I have to say, my husband and I wondered tonight if age is taking a bit of a toll on her voice. And I did take note of your praise of her longevity, business sense, and songwriting. I did love her poking fun at Simon and his Dollywood comment tonight. Ah, we should all own a Dollywood! LOL

OK, time for B-E-D! Chris, I know it's heaven being at home again. Enjoy and give Sarah a hug from us. Risa

Chris,

I was listening to Rick & Bubba this morn on my way in to work, they were talking about last night's AI etc. and how nast Simon is etc, and Bubba said he was waiting for another Chris Sligh to come along and give Simon a hard time or stand up to him, something to that effect! (I told you they really liked you)

Anyway, nice little plug.

DJ -

Glad to hear you finally got to meet the Man. Now he'll never mistake you for a dude again! Hope all is well with the Fro Patro - been too busy to post much - but I still stop by to check out what's going on -

Wish they'd have included Chris on the Nashville segment on AI last night - I predict next season - after Chris has 4 or 5 Number 1's on CCM - they'll be begging him to come back and sing onstage.

Peace -

Thanks Tom! Can you believe it?

We have missed you!

Hi. I've pre-ordered your CD and I am looking forward to hearing it. I made a countdown clock for the launch of your CD. If you like it, you are welcome to use it.

Pandarose,
Very nice countdown clock. Is that the code for it under the clock? Do you know if it will work on myspace?? I ask because I would love to put that up on myspace page. I am sure a bunch of us would.

Nice job.

Hey Chris, are you currently in Nashville? Josiah Leming will be performing a show there on Monday:

I'm so giddy about the fantastic news I keep reading about Amanda! Her "baby steps" are getting bigger! Yay prayer!

Carmen,
Yes, that is the code underneath it and yes, it should work on myspace. Just copy and paste.

Whoo! Rough night last night. Tornadoes dancing all around us. It got especially close to my mom in west LR, with trees downed very close to where she is, but luckily, the worst she sustained is her power still being out. I ran over there this morning and got her flashlights batteries replaced and took her some breakfast.

Got a text from Tammy just a few minutes ago that Amanda is being moved today from ICU back to a regular room. Such good news!

DJ in AL said...

Risa,

Glad you and Momma are ok, it looks like we may be in for it this afternoon and tonight, 'tis the season, tornaod season that is.

I am so thrilled to hear about Amanda. It never ceases to amaze me what the power of prayer can do!

Tornado that is.

EmilyBoo said...

Risa,
I'm glad you and your mom came through the tornadoes unscathed. And DJ, I'll pray for protection for you and yours in the case of tornadoes in your area today.

I'm so glad for Amanda's continued improvement and that she will be out of ICU today!

For anyone in the area (and that includes Tom in Atl), Chris will be singing at the Atlanta Braves/NY Mets game on Sunday, Apr 6th. (National Anthem AND "God Bless America"). Game starts at 1:30 PM. Notice is up on the fansite. Somebody - please tape it!

Just popping in to say hey and that I see as of this morning Amanda was supposed to get out of the ICU today!

Rosalee, I watch the Braves games online but they won't show that on air :( I wish they would. I don't think they'll show the national anthem or God Bless America on TV because they never do unless it's opening day or a playoff game. Hopefully someone at the game will tape it and put it on youtube.

Dang it, if my sister still lived in Atlanta, I might could have justified a road trip. LOL

Amanda did get moved last night, and I am going to call and see if I can talk with Amanda and Tammy today.

Y'all have a wonderful weekend. Here, it looks like weather wise it's going to be a beautiful day! Unfortunately, I'm having to stay in and work on income tax. Cause orange is not my best color! :)

I can't believe I missed Chris in Atlanta, I was watching that game, but didn't catch the beginning...argh...I misread the email and thought it was May 6th. Oh well!

DJ in AL said...

Wait a minute, of course I can believe I missed it, ....that's what I do:)

risalea said...

SUNDAY, April 6th, DJ. SUNDAY!

Better to be early than late to the party! : )

DJ in AL said...

Yippee, I didn't miss this one! Poor guy, he didn't get to stay at home long did he? Maybe Sarah got to go too!

rosalee said...

Rats! Foiled again!

Tawny - You were right! They didn't show Chris singing.
I hope someone at the Braves game recorded it.

Oh, had to share this....I've, of course, been raving about Chris to my friends for months (even though they all think I'm having a mid-life crisis LOL), and this one friend in particular, who doesn't do computers unless forced, hadn't heard any of his songs, until she heard "Empty Me" on the radio this past week. She sought me out at a church event tonight to tell me that she had heard it, and she was so complimentary and went on and on about how meaningful the words were. And I was able to add a little about why Chris had written it. So you never know who you may bring to the fold by planting a little seed. : )

For those that hadn't heard, the computer goal was reached and Amanda got her new computer on Saturday! She is absolutely thrilled and hopes to be back to posting to her caringbridge journal herself as soon as she regains her strength. I'm telling you folks, I have always believed in the power of prayer, but seeing how far she has come healthwise from when we saw her a week ago this past Friday, is nothing short of a miracle.

Y'all have a SUPER week!

EmilyBoo said...

Amanda posted her own update on caring bridge! It's short, but she did it!

DJ in AL said...

That's what my hubby said, but I had to check for myself, and nope, they didn't televise it! Sucks!

DJ in AL said...

I'm with you Risa (naturally) on the whole miracle thing with Amanda. I have always believed in the power of prayer but when you see it on this level, right before your eyes, it's so uplifting and motivating!

WOW. That would have been amazing to see come to fruition, but just the fact that you were offered it is an incredible honor. They are arguably the two funniest people alive. Bummer that it couldn't be arranged, but it's beyond awesome that you were asked. I'll keep an eye out for it myself.
