Requiem

So - a while back I told you guys about the Requiem I had written. A little explanation...

When I studied classical music in college, I really became entranced by composers. I wanted to be a composer. In a way, I guess am, though my compositions are different than classical composers. But when I studied those composers, I found that nearly all of them wrote Requiem masses. The reason why they did this was they were normally hired by rich people who, when a friend or family member died, would honor the dead by paying famous composers to write a great musical piece using the text from the Requiem Mass.

Over those years, I studied and sang many performances of Requiem masses and have always thought it would be cool to write one of my own. Now, that I'm in the pop/rock category, I thought it would be even cooler to write a pop/rock Requiem.

So, I took the Latin text, found several different translations and proceeded to either write songs based on the text or wrote songs using the text directly. The text is simply Scripture or adaptations of Scripture, so it was cool to dig in and try to write songs that both fit my theological place in life now and stayed true to the text.

Catholic doctrine is different in some places than what I believe, so the one text that pretty specifically spoke of Purgatory, I wrote a song based on the ideas of the text, instead of quoting the text directly.

The real recordings will have chamber orchestra and boy's choir, and they will of course sound better than the demos...but the demos I did a while back ended up very nice, I think.

Anyway, I've put the entire Requiem up over at myspace.com/chrisslighproductions.

Go, listen and let me know what you think...

The songs are really beautiful and your voice sounds awesome as usual.

I really love "Everlasting Light", "Righteous God", and "All We Are Offertory". The others are kind of sad but that's the way there supposed to be right?

Great job!!!!

Carrie said...

Myspace JUST showed me in the feed you uploaded new songs and I'm super excited to listen to them... But I have to wait until I get back from the store since I'm on my way out the door. AHH!

Hischild said...

LOVE this new music!! It's beautiful. Was in a great worshipful place in Holy Sanctus when music stopped and a Pizza Hut pop-up appeared!!! GRRR! Stupid corporate America! Just for that I'm ordering Little Caesar's for our party tomorrow night. hee hee

Can't wait to listen to these over and over again till their learned by heart. Thanks, Chris!

Anonymous said...

Beautiful! Will they be available for downloads or on a cd soon?

EmilyBoo said...

I had the same problem with the ad popping up and stopping the music, but I think mine was for Dominoes!

I really enjoyed all of the songs! I look forward to hearing them with the chamber orchestra and boy's choir!

risalea said...

I didn't want to comment until I had time to sit and listen to all the pieces, and really think about them. I'm blown away by the size and scope of the project and while I've always admired your talent, I'm truly impressed by this new side that we're hearing in the Requiem. Bravo, and can only imagine the final product with orchestra and boys' choir. Belissimo!

risalea said...

Winter Jam note-Do not arrive later than one hour before the show and expect to be sitting anywhere but behind the stage. I speak from experience, as in right now. : ). Very impressed with Meredith Andrews who is with Chris on some upcoming shows.

Hischild said...

Risa,
Meredith is opening for Chris at the Tempe show. I've never heard of her. So glad to know you like her. That means I will enjoy her too, I'm sure.

Chris,
I know you're busy but: How're things coming on this year's picnic date?? I'm needing to nail down my summer vacation soon. Greatly hoping I can make it once more.

ChrisSligh said...

As far as I know we're doing it July 4 weekend again this year!

Chris

risalea said...

Thanks for the confirmation, Chris! Centennial Park, July 4th, BBQ lunch, other details such as hotel info, etc. will be forthcoming in the next few days. Be there or be square! : )

Cathy Storms said...

WhooHoo!! July 4th in Nashville.
As Risa said "Be there or be square". It's going to be a hoot!!!

Hischild said...

Oh, thanks so much Chris!
Now, I gotta get to work seeing how I can make attendance possible.

As Cathy said: "WooHoo"!

rosalee said...

Very nice, Chris.

It deserves multiple listens, so that's what I'm doing now, while I'm catching up on the internet.
I was without power for a couple of days since there was an accident on my block. A town dump truck snagged some overhead wires and brought down some utility poles, effectively severing our electric/cable/phone connections.
Everything was finally restored today, but I spent more time than I would have wished in a VERY COLD house!(and the birds are fine).

Chris,
Love the new music. I went and googled Requiem and found a really cool web site that listed the prayers in latin on one side and English on the other. Once I read them I went back and listened to your music again. Once again you confirmed what I have always believed about you and that is you have an increidble talent for music. Please don't ever stop.

I am glad to hear that July 4th is a go ahead. We were fortunate to get Centenial Park on July 4th. Like Risa said we will have more details for everyone in the next week.

BTW-- I am here in the Onion Capital of the US--Vidalia, GA. The ride up was great and I am looking forward to Chris's performance. Keep ya'll updated.

I've gone back and listened to the Requiem a couple of times and it is beautiful. What an amazing project. I can't wait to here it with a choir in the background. It really is beautiful and very touching Chris.

Awesome job..

Awesome Chris! Thanks for the update. I was just on your myspace the other day listening to new songs. Super excited for you. Also, congrats on Here Comes Goodbye. It's an amazing song. I'm curious, what do you think of Melinda's debut ablum>

Chris,

Beautiful, beautiful songs. One question, do you ever sleep? LOL I suspect the answer is no. I wonder if one lifetime will be enough for you to do all you want to do.

So, went to the lake this weekend, fabulous weather, 70's in Feb. gotta love it. Anyway after a very tough couple of weeks at work, the lake was just what we needed. Tried to sleep in on Saturday but my sista from another mother texted me with the happy news that the picnic is on. While I couldn't do the happy dance around the R.V. just know I was doing it my head!

I hope all the ususal suspects will be able to come again this year and all those who couldn't make it, ya'll come!

Sending you happy thoughts from a relaxed D.J. in AL!

Well I am home from my motorcycle trip to Vidalia GA. It was great to see Chris perform again. This performance was very different from what I have experienced in the past because Chris actually was the worship music leader and then he did a short concert after the service. The song that really sticks out in my mind was Amazing Grace. That song holds a special place in my heart because it was my father's favorite hymn and he had requested that it be sung at his funeral. Chris it is like your voice was meant to sing that song I know that you have said that you don't sing other people's songs as well as your own but I disagree when it comes to Amazing Grace. When I realized that you were about to sing it, I thought I would get sad but actually hearing you sing it had the opposite effect. I just felt so at peace and calme listening to you.

The after concert was great. There were about 400 plus people there and the majority of them were college students. There were a lot of tweens hanging out across the front of the stage going crazy & screaming for Chris It was great to see the crowd so enthusiastic.

All & all it was a great weekend in the onion capital. The weather was beautiful and the ride was great.

Carmen

Cathy Storms said...

Carmen~Glad you got home safe and sound. Sounds like the concert was great. Would of loved to see the "tweens" all yelling for Chris. Awesome.

Would love to hear you sing "Amazing Grace". I love that song....

I am trying hard to watch the grammy's. I need feedback because either my ears are bad or the CBS engineer's really messed up. I can't remember another show where the sound quality was so bad and it doesn't seem to be the singers.

Hischild said...

Can't get enough of your Requiem, Chris. VERY lovely.

Carmen, how blessed you must have been to be able to have Chris as a worship leader. I'm SO envious! I'd LOVE to hear Chris sing Amazing Grace! :o) Thanks for the report. So glad you had an excellent time.

Badp: I watched last hour of Grammy's and thought I was hearing strange random sounds. Now I know it wasn't just me.
Rejoicing that my fav gal Alison Krauss won top honors. LOVE that album. She's only got 26 now!!! Incredible!
And Jordin in front row next to Paul McCartney?? WOW! Crazy stuff!

EmilyBoo said...

Badpacifist,
I like Adam Lambert, but I'm not sure what's fascinating about 3:08 in that video. What am I missing?

risalea said...

Favorite parts of the Grammy show (in no particular order):
1) Paul McCartney
2)Sugarland
3)Robert Plant(ah...memories of "Stairway to Heaven" when I was in 9th grade) and Allison Krauss
4)The "Four Tops" with Jamie Foxx
5)Coldplay
6)the USC marching band
7)Jennifer Hudson (except I hated that dress she came out in at first to accept her award...it looked like she got up from the dinner table with her napkin still tucked in at the neck)

And while it looked like Neil Diamond was having a great time, I hate it when singers are past their prime, still trying to sing their hits and are forced to talk/sing to avoid those unreachable notes. Oh, and M.I.A.? Words escape me.

Y'all have a good day...I gotta' go work!

DJ in AL said...

Agree with the sound quality of the Grammys, bizarre.

Enjoyed some parts and wondered how some of the people on stage made their way up there. Is it me or does Sligh's voice blow 90% of those performing last night away?

Loved Cold Play, Adam Levine, well he's just Hot (I'm 48, not dead). Wasn't a fan of Jennifer Hudson's choice of songs, or dress, but love her. Kid Rock, Rock & Roll Jesus, interesting title, but I do love me some Kid Rock, I mean "Sweet Home AL all Summer Long" what's not to like? Paul McCartney, well he is the king.

Happy Monday to all!

Cathy Storms said...

The sound on the grammys was really bad!!
I loved Sugarland. She is just as cute as a bug in a rug.
Loved Adelle. Never really heard her till last night.
I love Kid Rock. Ok, so it's that old rebellious part of my teenage years coming out. Can't help it.
Paul McCartney still rocks.
Robert Plant and Allison Krauss. Yeah!
I missed the Four Tops? Darn...I love them. Saw them in Vegas and they were awesome..

Anonymous said...

Hi Em, it was just the song was so-so until that part. I agree with Sugarland. She sang the heck out of that one. I heard Chris Brown was charged with assault with a deadly weapon. If that is true .....serious felony that is. Hitting a woman makes you a complete and total punk. Too bad I liked him before this.

gdahimself said...

Risa &,

“Jennifer Hudson (except I hated that dress she came out in at first to accept her award...it looked like she got up from the dinner table with her napkin still tucked in at the neck)”

Why are most women hyper aware/critical what other women are wearing?

I remember in school showing a photo of WV Beetle that had been customized into a limo. All that captured her attention and was worthy of comment was the woman standing by the car had “ugly high heels and baggy panty hose”.

DJ,

I believe the basic reason most are here is because Chris has a voice.

Badpacifist,

Regrets about Chris Brown but there’s no reason to feel badly about liking his music even though he proved to be a disappointment in how he conducts his personal life.

risalea said...

GDA, you are treading in territory where most men dare not go. I didn't criticize Jennifer personally, her singing, or even how she looked in the dress. Just the dress. And shame on the stylist who recommended it. And the list of why do men ___________? (fill in the blank) is long and ponderous. 'Nuff said.

DJ in AL said...

GDA,

Ouch, dear man you went and "stepped" in it dude! In your defense, you being a man and all and trying to understand how and what women think about other women and what they do or don't wear, well it's not surprising that you you find yourself in a little over your head. But as always you crack me up, not too sure my sista from anotha agrees with me though:)

Oh and BTW, I don't know about everyone else but I come here for a long list of reasons, only one of which is that Chris has a voice.

risalea said...

Sista' in AL...I think you and GDA just opened up a good thread of conversation. Why do we come here?

For me, initially it was because of Chris's voice and his humor. Why do I keep coming back?
1)the friends (even the ones who don't understand women! LOL)
2)the conversation...always interesting.
3)exposure to new things--I learned things I didn't know about a Requiem, for example, this week. And Chris has enlightened us on many aspects of the music business along the way.
4)support--I think we do a good job of supporting each other and coming here is supportive of our friend, Chris. And I say friend deliberately, cause I think those of us who have been around for awhile would probably say we don't consider ourselves so much as fans, as friends who care about what is happening with another friend, who happens to have been on American Idol and has made a critically acclaimed album, and is generous with his time and talent supporting worthwhile causes, and is a big time country music writer now! : )
5)and cause I can't stand to miss anything!
Excuse me if I have gone on too long, which I always do, but today I will blame it on cold meds. : )

Anonymous said...

GDA,

In uncharted by man territory indeed.

Sounds like your school friend disappointed you deeply by not sharing your enthusiasm regarding the car.

Chris, your music makes a grey day on the coast, shine !

Shalom

Cathy Storms said...

Oh GDA...I thought that dress Jennifer Hudson had on was awful. It did look like she left her napkin in her dress after dinner.

Why do we come here?
Because it always feels like coming home.
Chris has made me feel so much more like a friend or even a family member than a fan.
I can always depend on all the blogger family for support.

I have learned, like you Risa, so much from you Chris about music, the business, and new artists and it's amazing.

Chris has brought this group of people together who knew nothing about each other and made us all friends who really do care about each other.

It appears I narrowly avoided introducing discord into the greater social harmony of our blog community. It is probably better to let that line of inquiry be overtaken by silence.

As I didn’t see the show, there’s no comment on the aesthetic offending garment in question but the truly awful would inspire a passing thought it should be consigned to the back of the closet, if not be burned as soon as possible.

Filling in Risa’s blank would most likely be things I’m blind to with a fair number me specific.

“Boys are beyond the range of anybody's sure understanding, at least when they are between the ages of 18 months and 90 years.” – James Thurber

Unlike the American Idol devotees, MY initial interest in Chris came from see a bit of clip of him singing on Access Hollywood then catch up on YouTube with other internet searches before arriving here, other discoveries and attractions followed.

Back checking the Thurber quote I thought this was worthy to ponder.

“There are two kinds of light - the glow that illuminates, and the glare that obscures.” – James Thurber

GDA,
Like you I didn't see what Jennifer Hudson wore. In your defense GDA, I tend to agree with you. I will even take it a step further and say women can be very catty towards one another especially when it comes to hair, clothes, weight etc. I am defintely guilty of doing this. This is not to say that Risa was being catty. Risa has a very good eye for fashion and what "looks good" on someone. I think she was just making an observation.

As for why I come here to the blog. I initially came here to learn more about Chris. I was curious to find out his thoughts on music, religion and life in general. Now I come for some of the same reasons that Risa & the others mentioned. The primary one being the friends that I have found here. Those friends have givem me great support, advice and a lot of laughs. I continued to be amazed by the caring, giving people who find there way to this blog. I think that the type of people who come here speaks volumnes about Chris and the man that he is. Good people draw other good people to them. I fell blessed to know all of you and to have gotten the chance to know Chris.

Haha, I'm with badpacifist, you all ARE pretty amusing! I can't wait to meet everyone in person, (REALLY hoping that the picnic works out for my family this year!)

I enjoy seeing what celebrities are wearing. That's not to say I would take fashion advice from many of them... their choices can be interesting, to say the least. Jennifer Hudson is a beautiful, classy, talented woman. I didn't like that dress, but I don't like her any less for it. Speaking of celebrity fashion, how about the two outfits that pregnant woman wore at the grammys? (Sorry, I don't know who she is, but if you saw her, you know who I mean.)

EmilyBoo said...

Lori, that link didn't work for me...

Anonymous said...

Every time I read the word "Requiem" I think of "Amadeus" the movie.

I thought GDA's assessment of women and the situation we find ourselves in, of perceiving/judging/criticizing/taking note one another rather apt. To a man, the car is the focal point of the picture-- but a woman sees the Woman in the photo as the focus! heh!;-)

I really enjoyed the Grammys alot. The mixing of the original artists with fresh new and/or different ones to sing the songs was really diverting. I also watch the Fashion Police shows they have the next day, to enjoy the reviewing(and criticism, hah!)of the stars' outfits. Love that stuff.

One of my favorite moments(aside from ones mentioned) was the Taylor Swift/Miley Cyrus duet. I think that Taylor's talent has not even been scratched yet, and that's really a wonderful thing to consider. That girl has poise, and something to offer. Depth matters.

GDA~we are working out the details and then there will be plenty of announcements. It will be held on July 4th at the same park as last year.
Hopefully next week we will have hotel arrangements and anything else.

We're working on it I promise. I am going in today for surgery on my hand that chemo destroyed and will be in the hospital for a couple of days, so next week we will be able to answer more questions...

rosalee said...

GDA -
Are you planning on coming to the picnic this year?

Lori -
That was a very cute video of Teddy.

I didn't like Jennifer Hudson's first dress either. I fell asleep during the show, woke up to "I Saw Her Standing There", and then fell asleep again, so I missed parts of the festivities.

risalea said...

Per picnic questions....we are waiting to hear back from Famous Dave's on the price and are talking with the hotel folks on Thursday, so should have something more concrete for everyone next week. This will be a fundraiser, once again, for St. Jude, in memory of Amanda Rhea Jones. We hope to have some sort of show with Chris, but details on that will be forthcoming at a later date.

I do hope when we get all the registration info up, that any bloggers who plan on coming will register quickly. We anticipate more interest this year with the Rascal Flatts buzz and after Chris has done so many shows all over in the past year, more folks have become familiar with his music. We are limited to how many we can host, due to the size of the pavilion, so save that date now and be ready to reserve your spot as soon as you can. When all details have been worked out and the website updated with registration info, we'll announce it here first! There will definitely be some sort of Mix and Mingle on Friday night, July 3rd, and the picnic for lunch on the
4th.

And everyone be praying for Cathy...she goes in at 5 pm CA time, for her surgery.

Chris, have fun in WDW!

Ok, so who wants to guess which of the top 36 VFTW picks 1st? My dearest hope is that it's Tatiana.

Chris I'm expecting you to weigh in on who you think will make it in the top 10, providing you've had a chance to watch any of AI this season.

Sending you love from a jaded DJ in AL

risalea said...

OK, have to say I'm disappointed with the way we saw the same faces on AI the last few shows, over and over, and others, are barely seen at all. (I'm talking Kris Allen here, but I know there are others). I was happy to see the VFTW spoilers confirmed that he made it, but I wish America could hear him sing. It does give an unfair advantage to those who've been showcased so much...they have had a chance to build a fanbase before the voting ever starts. Just sayin'!

EmilyBoo said...

Risa,
You had me going there for a minute with that video! I had it figured out that it was all in fun about halfway through though!

Regarding some contestants getting pre-voting-rounds screen time while others do not, that has ALWAYS bothered me! They are usually voted off in the first week (like Garrett and Colton last year... and I bet not many people even remember them.) I hope some of these people really blow us away with their performances in the first week so that they have a chance!

Hischild said...

Wow! I've missed a lot here in the last few days.

This has been fun reading. Gotta commisserate w/you Risa and Emily on AI slights. There's so much that's not fair but I know that going in.

Ummm, Clearsa, not sure I feel the same way about Nick/Norman and Nate, but it is sure to be interesting!

risalea said...

My sister just sent me info on that on facebook. Pretty cool!

Hischild said...

Lori,
Thanks for the pandora info. Sounds great! I'm gonna check it out.

Rosalee,
Joanna out and Felicia in. I like that arrangement better but *do* feel sorry for Joanna. Such a roller coaster ride for these contestants.

Risa,
Awww c'mon now. Nate's a sweet kid w/a really good voice, just a little hard to look at (for me) with those piercings and such. Nick/Norman - totally unpredictable. I will watch w/greater interest. The others seem to really like him too. Now Tatianna - does that girl have a friend in the world?? Does she need one?? ha ha I think she is certifiably crazy. I like watching other people who are in camera shot with her! Funny!

Now I will be the first to come to HATE these three if they outlast a few of my favorites (serious career seekers). But that's what makes Idol SO much fun.

And I think Randy was right Krysten IS more interesting than Jenn. If Simon had his way Bikini girl would still be around. Ugh.

Happy Valentine's Day to my fellow Fro Patroers!

(even if it is a made-up retail holiday, lol)

Sending you love from a cupid struck DJ in AL!

I have pictures from last years picnic all over my myspace and facebook as well as probably still uploaded to that walgreens site so you can use any of them you'd like.

Thanks everyone who thought of me -- I appreciate it. I'm glad it didn't crash closer to me, but it still scares me. Right now we are working on getting Extreme Home Makeover to come and fix the house that was destroyed. The husband of that family was also killed when the plane hit.

On a positive note, Happy Valentines Day! I may be single again but I still get chocolate! Mmm.

DJ,

Your retail theory takes a powder.

"The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished."

GDA,

Yea, Yea, I know this, but how many other fairytales like this exist that never get a Hallmark Card developed for them? I'd hazard a guess and say thousands!

Hey, I'm a chick, I support any holiday that guilts my hubby to go buy me something, and hey, I need no reason to eat chocolate, however, I'd just as soon he buy me something on a Non-Holiday, it would mean more.

Happy Sunday!

xangelglitterx-Gaylon and I went to see them at Alltel, about three years ago, I think. We were in the rafters, and I hated that, cause the sound was terrible, and literally, the seats up there, you feel like if you lean a little too far forward, you'll go tumbling down. The only concert I have gotten him back to since then, is American Idol and that's cause we had floor seats. They do put on an awesome show, though, and won't that be great hearing them sing Chris's song in concert. That's gotta be some ching ching, everytime they do it! LOL

OK, Fro members, we'd like to put your pic in the fan album on the picnic website, as I know there are lots of you out there we don't have a picture for. (GDA?) So send my way so we can add them on. I'm not putting names with them, just cause, so you don't have to worry about that. www.fropatropicnic.webs.com

Rosalee and Harry, I expect you to be there! I know the ususal suspects will be there, but how about Shalom? Carrie and your friend? Purple Poodle?

Can you tell I am excited about the picnic this a.m.? I have no idea why today, but I am.

K, guess I better go earn my pay for the day.

Happy Monday fellow Fro Patoers!

BTW where's our idol?

xangelglitterx~The picnic is on the 4th of July. I'm so excited your coming. It's going to be so much fun. I think I'm coming in on Wed and leaving on Monday. Thats the plan anyway.
Who else is planning on coming?

risalea said...

Hey angel-we plan to have some kind of mix and mingle on Friday night, picnic on Sat. Somewhere in there we hope to have a performance by Chris, either an acoustic for the group, or maybe a 4th of July gig he may be doing for the public somewhere... or both?....TBD. Last year, we got lucky and had an unexpected bit of lagniappe with a fireworks show on Friday and then the 3rd and Lindsley show on Sat. night.

Would you guys be up for karaoke on Friday night? Give us input! Also if you go to the www.fropatropicnic.webs.com site, there is a guestbook where you can give feedback as well. Hope we have the registration page up sometime this week. BBQ Mike is slow getting back to us on a catering price.

Hello Chris & All,

Reading this DJ and thinking attendance is unlikely but who knows...

Son is off to China in 3 weeks and then California in April. Delighted for him but the reality is that these band trips cost money.

Just bought Chinese money and set him up with an emergency Visa, so am tender in the finance spot.

Will have to see how bathroom renovations, year #3 of correcting exterior house paint issues ( Arrrrgh ! )and life in general go.

Never say never is something I'm learning. Would love to meet everyone.

I do hope you have a great turnout.
Shalom

DJ in AL said...

Shalom,

Completely understand, but disappoited to say the least! As I have a son in college this year and the economy being what it is no one knows better than I how fast $ seems to fly out the window.

But as you say, never say never and I will hope for a financial miracle!

risalea said...

In my old age, I have taken the attitude of you can't take it with you, and I'd rather have fun spending the inheritance now, rather than letting my kids have all the fun after I'm gone. LOL Seriously, totally understand, glad your child is having such an awesome opportunity and hope, Shalom, you can find a way to work it out, as we'd love to meet you in person!

We actually got a little cut on the room cost this year, playing the "economy is really bad" card, so yay for that! If only tax wasn't so horrible...I figure we are financing another Brentwood ballpark or something! : )

Take care!

Anonymous said...

College ! 2 high school years yet,DJ.

Risalea, we do operate from the can't take it with you mindset. Have often thought that if one of us were an ant, rather than 2 grasshoppers who love to travel, we might actually have money !

Then again, we sold stock early to do the big trip last year, and had we not, that stock would have totally evaporated. We have instead a wonderful 'stock' of memories.

Just lucky timing, no market skill, but it's reinforced our bad grasshopper lifestyle.

We're not irresponsible, but if it's trip or save, trip wins.

Funniest part is that we seem to have produced an ant. The son is a careful saver... :0

Go figure. Shalom

xangelglitterx - always great to hear from you but stop shouting by using some small case letters

P.S.

Just wanted to add that I'm acutely aware that in these times it is a luxury to be able to consider house renovations when so many are homeless, or to consider vacations when others consider their next meal.

I am not a glib person.

Have spent some years in not comfortable circumstances, and am ever mindful of our blessings.

Now off here and to work !

Shalom

DJ in AL said...

Shalom,

We have always lived for today and then a year ago realized that college would not pay for itself, yikes! I've never quite gotten the hang of saving until now. Additionally my husband and I both have jobs that aren't as safe as I'd like them to be in the current economy so saving seems the most prudent thing for us at the moment, though I hate it! So while I'd love to always be able to throw caution to the wind, right now that just isn't possible so I totally understand others in the same situation. I save my pennies for things like the Fro Patro picnic and hope for the best!

I would have loved to meet you in person but if you can't make it we will lift a glass of Sweet Tea in your honor!

DJ in AL said...

Shalom,

I can't imagine you ever being glib about anything:)

Hello Everyone--
First I have to say, I have been LOVING the Idol stuff coming out of WDW. Chris was featured in this weeks IdolWrap, with Justin Guarini in WDW there-- so catch it if you have cable. Justin must be tall! He and Chris are pretty even height-wise, which seems tree-like to a Hobbit like myself. ;-)

Secondly, there is already a ton of stuff vying for my 4th of July time. How can so much be log jamming into one few day period of time already, in Feb?? I hope I can make it to the Picnic. I'd love to meet your faces, there. It's rather exciting, if odd, to be talking about summer plans already...the first crocuses have only just bloomed here.

Thirdly, Shalom I feel your angst about the college talk. Already it starts for my HS student, and it can be a daunting subject! Too early for anxiety attacks, so I'm trying to just enjoy the season I'm in.

DJ in AL said...

Bully, I hope you can make it to the picnic! Try, try hard!

Re: Picnic Attendance.
I am not one of the "usual suspects" who will be attending, unlike what DJ mentioned.
Zero money for travel and hotels. Any traveling we're doing is going to be going back home so that the grandparents can see Teddy. Unfortunately our family priorities have caused the picnic to be bumped off the radar for us :(. Very sad to be missing it. Wish money wasn't an issue.

Sorry someone did...

Shalom

risalea said...

Well, unfortunately, money is always an issue,...we all make choices every day about how we spend it, based on family priorities and where we are in life. When I was in my 20's we didn't take any big trips, and our first big family vacation with the kids was to WDW when I was probably about 30 and the oldest two were almost 6 and 8 yrs. old. We saved for months, and we had a budget for everything from the gasoline, to the food, motel and souvenirs. Like DJ, college sort of crept up on us, and we did the "pay as you go" thing, and luckily were at a point then where we could do it without too much pain. Our choices will probably have me as a Walmart greeter down the road! : )

Of course, this economy is not making it easy for so many. I'm aghast when I hear about folks being "upside down" on their mortages, paying high monthly payments for a house that isn't worth what it was financed for. Unbelievable.

Praying that things get better, folks without jobs find one soon, and that no one who reads this goes without the necessities of life!

Carmen and Petsmart have recommended bitter apple spray. I hope it works!!

Walmart stock will no doubt soar. LOL

FYI, anyone thinking of going to Memphis (Germantown) to see Chris this weekend--according to the church office, the only night open to the public is Sun., the 22nd at 6 pm when Chris will be part of the evening worship service. The Sat. concert is for the kids taking part in their Disciple Now weekend. So unless you can disguise yourself as a middle or high schooler, don't try it. : )

Anonymous said...

Hey All! Spouse came home today saying, that a co-worker of his plays country music on her little radio at her desk, and he heard that RascalFlatt song not once but twice today, just in happenstance! That shows very good airplay, IMO. :-)

Oh, and regarding the Sligh-fro HstryQT? I would miss it too! Not many of us have hair great enough to be it's own trademark! heh!

HstryQT said...

Yet another Sligh-song-choice blast from the past last night (this time that's not a good thing)...

WTH was Casey Carlson thinking??? She OBVIOUSLY hasn't done her Idol history homework. "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" was the song that got Chris kicked off of Season 6 (I've hated the song ever since). The song is very hard to sing, with awkward pauses and such. If a song can get Sligh kicked off (way too early) then it's pretty obvious it should NEVER BE SUNG AGAIN. Because of this oversight in doing her Idol research, I don't feel bad for her. I'm glad that she probably won't make it and that will make room for the much deserved Alexis. Harsh but oh well :).

Cathy Storms said...

Lori~I've hated that song ever since Chris got kicked off also. To funny...

I can't believe no one has commented on the results show. Danny-no surprise. Alexis--the same. Michael--looked like he was the one from Dialidol, but you never know. I really thought it would be Anoop. I really liked Ricky, but I think he's lost his chance at a wildcard--I predict it will go to Anoop. That's assuming they pick one from each group, and I don't know if that is how it works or not.

Next week folks, watch and vote KRIS ALLEN. He's the worship leader at New Life in Maumelle, where Lindsay's roommates go to church, and though I haven't had much of an opportunity to hear him, they say he's awesome.

I refuse to let myself get too tied to anyone though...I don't have time for another group like this! LOL No one could match this group or our fearless leader anyway.

Night, all!

HstryQT said...

I agree Risa. I'm definitely excited about Danny Gokey this year but no one will ever top Chris, our fearless leader as you say :).

Cathy Storms said...

I really like Michael Sarver. I have a weakness for big burly construction workers..grrrr!!!!
Anyway, it's way to early in the season to have a favorite and I don't want to get that invested in the show this year.
But it will be intersting if they do a Kelly Clarkson week like I've heard hearing a big burly construction worker singing "Since You've been Gone"...

A Kelly week...hey Chris, can you get me tickets?

Anonymous said...

The requiem is the most stricly-christian chris sligh I've heard. Good work as always.

Anyway, I've noticed "Arise" is not doing well in any Radio format right now. What are the plans for a third single, if any? If there will be a third single released to pop radio as you had previously mentioned, I strongly urge you to release "In a Moment", that song really seems to connect with people, it sure connected with me and is my favorite song on "Running back to you".

Anonymous said...

RE Idol results last night-- I hate to say it, but I was really rooting for Tatianna. :-) She really can sing, and she just wants this so badly. This new voting thing/top three is stupid, IMO. Now that we are in show time, they deserve to be seen and heard, given a chance! Let America decide.

I liked the sparkly-eyed Ricky Braddy, but I have trouble remembering his name, so that's indicative. I think Anoop should get the wildcard placement. We'll see how it all shakes out. Either way, there WILL be entertainment! heh!

Carmen said...

Speaking of our fearless leader---where are you? We would all love to hear your comments on AI or just about anything.

Carmen

Anonymous said...

Bully I am with you! I completely agree. I was so hoping Ricky Braddy would by some miracle get in there but I am happy that Michael Sarver did. The Braddy bunch just didn't get enough pre-show hype. Anoop will be back for sure!
Tatianna made all of us go nuts when she sang because she really could sing. It was a mixed emotion of "OH NO!" and "you go girl" .... lols. Unfortunately all of us in my house were sitting there looking at each other during her performance with mouths agape and uncomfortable giggles in between. My jury is out on the new format until the wild card round. At first glance it seems some real talented people get eliminated but I am not sure how it all works yet.

EmilyBoo said...

For those of you who like Ricky Braddy, have you heard what has happened to his fansite? They were contacted by Fremantle Media with a cease and desist letter, saying that the website gives Ricky an unfair advantage. There's a post about it on the front page of VFTW. I'm not sure when the letter was received, I'm thinking after he performed, but before he was eliminated.

I'm sorry, but unfair advantage? Many other contestants also have fansites which apparently were not told to cease and desist. To me, an unfair advantage would be all the air time that has been given to Danny Gokey, while Ricky hasn't had any air time at all! I like Danny and all, but I truly think Ricky sang better than him, and I hate that it's SO obvious that the producers want him to go far, meanwhile treating Ricky, who turned in one of the VERY few good performances of this week, like he's some kind of cheater!

EmilyBoo said...

BTW, Chris approved my facebook friend request yesterday. Haha, I don't even remember putting in the request, it must have been ages ago. So Chris, is that really you?

risalea said...

That is ridiculous about that cease and dsist order for Ricky, but it probably has somethibg to do with the fact his mom mentioned it on air. I think Anoop will be the wild card and unfortunately, his lack of exposure hurt him. Remember, KRIS ALLEN next week! Randy, you coming to the picnic? Hope so! Registration will be up this weekend. Emily we had the same question about that Facebook page, as several of us were approved, too from requests long ago. I tried posing a question that Chris would know on the wall,(LOL) but it was quickly buried. Chris,is it you or a poser? :)

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=17116&id=1111018038&l=2ba7b

Sarah was there, so that was unexpected lagniappe. Loved catching up with her. I always laugh when Chris talks about "marrying up". Hey, at least you had the good sense to recognize a prize when you saw her!

Guys, be ready to vote, vote, vote starting on the 26th for the Dove new artist award. Is there any reason why we can't catapult Chris to victory?!

OK, off to Sam's and then a nap. I got in late and then stayed up putting pics on Facebook. Bags under the eyes tell the tale.

gdahimself said...

My Dear Miss Risa,

Pray tell, what is "lagniappe"?

Anonymous said...

Risalea,

Had never seen nor heard the word 'lagniappe'before.

First I thought French, but apparently Spanish, then Creole spell change.

I love this word. Will work hard dropping it in reports and conversations...

Thanks, Shalom

risalea said...

GDA--From Wikipedia:

Though lagniappe is included in English dictionaries it is used primarily in the region influenced by New Orleans[2] (and therefore Louisiana French) culture and so may be thought of as being more Cajun French or Louisiana Creole French than English. This is especially so since the spelling has been influenced by French.[3]

Mark Twain writes about the word in a chapter on New Orleans in Life on the Mississippi (1883). He called it "a word worth traveling to New Orleans to get":

We picked up one excellent word — a word worth traveling to New Orleans to get; a nice limber, expressive, handy word — "lagniappe." They pronounce it lanny-yap. It is Spanish — so they said. We discovered it at the head of a column of odds and ends in the Picayune, the first day; heard twenty people use it the second; inquired what it meant the third; adopted it and got facility in swinging it the fourth. It has a restricted meaning, but I think the people spread it out a little when they choose. It is the equivalent of the thirteenth roll in a "baker's dozen." It is something thrown in, gratis, for good measure.

In other words, went expecting Chris, and got a little "happy" by having Sarah, too!

I like it too, Shalom.

risalea said...

Chris, when we start having vocabulary discussions, it's time for a new blog! LOL

gdahimself said...

Risa,

I think this a little more direct from Dictionary.com

la⋅gniappe   /lænˈyæp, ˈlænyæp/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [lan-yap, lan-yap] –noun

1. Chiefly Southern Louisiana and Southeast Texas. a small gift given with a purchase to a customer, by way of compliment or for good measure; bonus.
2. a gratuity or tip.
3. an unexpected or indirect benefit.
