Ramblings (8-3-07)

Have you ever noticed that Chuck Taylor's have been the shoe of choice for the alternative crowd for forever. I mean, you never see preppy people wearing Chuck's. Why is that? Why has the cycle never come around to preppy kids wearing Chuck's?

Weird.

haha totally love this blog. Chucks are my shoe of choice. though i only have 4 pair. the normal low top black ones...2 others and my fave high top green. I have seen a few preppy kids wear them. i think mostly to fit in with the other kids. Because from what i see the alternative crowed is actually the in crowed, alot more kids are in it then in the preppy crowed. haha...yea i dont think any of that made sense but whatever.

Hey Chris - I think we all need to go to Milan!

Milan Menswear Show Spring 2006
Jasper Conran: Preppy Modern
Spring and summer trends for 2006

This collection is definitely young
Romantic looking models were wearing full suits teamed with classic Chuck Taylor Converse sneakers for a youthful edge that came off very Hampton with a British kick.

A little scary??

There are a lot of shoes which can be considered more "alternative" other than Chucks, such as Vans which I actually have a pair of. They're more skater-type sort of shoes and no, I do not skate. At all. Not even on my socks across the kitchen.

But seriously.

Shoes? Is this what you all sit around and talk about on tour? lmao.

To Chris,
From GDA,

I guess it comes down to group identification and the attendant conformity of choice.

It would be of interest to know what caused this particular observation to float into your awareness?

Maybe we should all wonder how Hawai'i is part of the federal interstate highway system?
Imagine the engineering feat in creating and building a connecting bridge to California.

To Amanda,
Forget those shoes with wheels on them. The St. Jude’s staff won’t be able to catch up with you in hell on wheels mode.

Amanda ~ I have ALWAYS wanted to try those shoes with wheels in them! Those boys always look like they're having so much fun! LOL

ChrisSligh said...

No one is saying that Chuck's are the most alternative shoes in the world...but you don't see preppy kids (sure there are some exception) wearing Chuck's.

Just an observation. It's almost always the kids trying to be alternative or the punks.

I know i would probably go to roll on them and fall and break my butt. It would be worth it though. ok that is what im telling my dad i want for my 21 b-day. Shoes with wheels and Ford Focus car. I see the shoe's happening before the car though

Cathy Storms said...

These are the coolest shoes. I love these shoes!!! I wear them & people at work make fun of me but do I care? NOT!!! Did you know that you can go on their website & design your own? Maybe we could design some cool "Sligh Shoes"..

Cathy Storms said...

Why haven't the preppy kids started wearing these shoes? Hmmm...good question. Maybe it's because these shoes make a statement about the person who is wearing them. They kind of scream out rebel...They show that the person wearing these shoes is an individual & doesn't follow all the rules.

risalea said...

OK, I feel dumb. I had to google to see what you were talking about. Now, if you'd said hightops, I would have at least had a clue. : ) But here's something interesting...I polled my 25 year old daughter, my 16 yr. old son and an 18 yr. old friend of his (girl) and none of them had heard of Chuck Taylor shoes. I would say maybe they haven't made it to AR, but Amanda knows what they are and has some, so that blows that theory. Ethan is not preppy or alternative....more the "good old country boy who loves his boots." LOL Risa
p.s. Hey, Chris can be as random as we are at times!

gdahimself said...

To Chris,
From GDA,

“It's almost always the kids trying to be alternative or the punks“

Sounds like the proverbial/traditional adolescent rebellion against their parents and society’s rules and way of living. Trading a familiar conformity for a novel conformity that sets them apart from their parents. Frequently, the more it annoys their parents, or other grown ups, the greater the attraction.

Turn that revolt into style or fashion.

GDA

I'm not saying the shoes are bad, though, I should make clear. I wear them almost constantly. But I have preppy shoes, too. My mind thinks about crazy stuff, sometimes, and it was just a musing.

To Chris,
From GDA,

A guitar that looks interesting to check out:
“The Steinberger Synapse ST-2FPA TranScale Custom Electric Guitar has a flamed maple top for killer looks. Play it open and it's a baritone, roll the built-in capo up a couple of frets and it's a normal 25-1/2" guitar. Add to this Steinberger's brilliant design features such as the tune-it-once direct-drive double-ball bridge, fold-down leg rest, and graphite-reinforced neck with ultrafast phenolic fingerboard and you've got a truly advanced and infinitely playable instrument.”

There is photo and the source of the above description at: http://www.videoranch.com/html/guitar_contest.html

The reason I know of this, I am on the Videoranch mailing list:
It is an incentive to join Videoranch 3d, a paid membership site that is part of Michael Nesmith’s Videoranch. On September 1st , as an active member you are entered into a drawing for the guitar.
I wouldn’t expect you would find it of interest to join as their forte is California country music.

If curious to check out the Videoranch: http://www.videoranch.com/html/frhomepage.html

Yes, I've noticed that they've been around forever. I've never owned a pair so I'm not sure as to why they've stuck around for so long. Is it the look or are they really comfortable.. or both?

Just to let you all know, I arrived in Milwaukee safely :)

Christi said...

rofl! ahhh I've missed reading your blog SO MUCH this summer!! I have been too busy to keep up with anything until now... I look forward to seeing what you have to say again!

Chucks are definitely on of my favorite shoes... It seems every time I go shopping, I come home with another pair. I also own a pair of hot pink crocs...extremely preppy looking :D I suppose I just wear what I think looks good.

HstryQT said...

Risa- I fall into your theory. Where I come from we call them straight up Converse, not Chuck Taylors. I felt stupid looking it up,lol, but once I did I was like "Ohhhh. Converse!" And I totally would've known that!

It's definitely the alternative crowd that wears them in my area. But like Carrie was mentioning, many skaters/alt kids wear Vans. And Vans *have* bridged the "crowd" gap - a lot of preppy kids wear Vans.

I guess I'm uber-preppy because I wear American Eagle shoes.. or just whatever will go with my cute teacher outfits. Gosh, I'm such a conformist!

I was getting ready in my mind the post where I was going to ask 'what the heck are chuck taylors?' when I read that they were converse. I'm with Risa and HistoryQT - Converse I know, Chucks - I've never heard of. Oh well, I have never claimed to be hip, stylish, or otherwise trend savvy. My brother always wore converse and he is the most anti-social, death metal listening, and alternative person I know. Hmmm... I never realized there was a connection!

rosalee said...

Risa, Lori, Keri -

Me too - I had to Google "Chuck Taylors" to find out what they were. Of course I recognized them when I saw them.

It seems that everybody had a party here last night while I was off at a Kevin Covais/Paris Bennett concert. I came back to 2 new Chris blogs!

Kevin opened for Paris and performed 8 songs - some uptempo and some ballads. He sang them karaoke style. Apparently there was "no money in the budget" for live musicians. He actually sounded better than on AI.

Paris gave a high energy performance with a four piece band (guitar, bass, drums, keyboards), one backup singer (her mom) and two dancers. Her mom's voice is actually richer than Paris's (Paris was a little shrieky). Paris worked the audience, meandering through the crowd, inviting the little girls up on the stage with her. She gave a really professional performance.
Kevin joined her at the end for some dancing.

I got their autographs, but the memory card on the camera became full before I could get photos with them. My husband said he will upgrade the memory card before the Idol concert on Aug. 24th. He also took some videos of the performances, but had to hold the camera on his lap too much of the time (capturing the audio, but not much of the video) because security caught him taking movies instead of stills. Hopefully at the Idol concert we'll have better luck.

Chris--keeping it entertaining, as usual. Who knew that shoes would generate so much discussion? Okay, so is Sanjaya wearing Chucks in Let's Get It Started? They're very cool, whatever they are. Are all of you wearing them? (I haven't zeroed in on the rest of you, because the photos have been on fanjaya sites, and they're--well--of Sanjaya)

Carrie, you've never skated in socks across your kitchen floor?? Life is short--I dare you to try it. Wheee! Even old GirlyGirl has a skate now and then.

I second Lori's assessment that it's the alternative crowd in our neck of the woods who wear them, and they're probably better known as Converse here. So, is there a correlation between where Rotel begins and ends and the dividing line between Chucks and Converse? hahaha!

Rosalee, I'm glad you enjoyed the Kevin/Paris concert. I like Paris a lot and hope to see her perform some day if she pursues the jazz side of things. I'm glad to hear that Kevin did well--my niece sees him at diabetes conferences and says he's a real sweetheart.

Rosalee, that sounds like a great show. I loved Kevin when i met him. He came to the Richmond Idol concert and i met him at the meet and greet a sweet kid.

I would love to see Paris in concert, cause though vocally she did well on tour, she wasnt as upbeat to me as she was on the show. Is her cd good? what genre did she go with?

So i spent the day at a shoe store and found some awesome Chucks (but still broke cant buy them so sad lol)...green and pink plaid, being a blaker girl is killing me for some reason i believe everything i own should be plaid. haha. but they are my fave 2 colors.

I'm from the Midwest, and I called them high-tops. But down South people call them Chucks or Chuck Taylors. Had me scratching my head for a bit there.

Ds would like to imagine that he's a rock star or a goth or something, so he loves his black Chucks and his red & blue Chucks.

Dd is just trendy. She wears a lot of different styles, but she does own a pair of multicolored block Chucks and a pair of plain black ones.

amandarhea86 said...

Hey i have multicolored block ones, they are pink, black, red, and white. so i have told you the other 3 i own might as well tell yall the 4th pair haha, there actually chuck taylors, but they are suede, and pink with rasberry color on them..really cute. I dno about yall but around here we all have low top black ones and let ppl sign them. so we have dif color sharpie marks all over them.

Where In the World Is Chris Sligh?
Today, Aug. 4, he's in St. Paul, MN, twin city to Minneapolis. (our thoughts and prayers to both communities as they deal with the aftermath of the tragic bridge collapse). St. Paul is Minnesota's capital city, and second in population. Back to 1820, it served as an extreme outpost to the Old West, a place where Native Americans, European explorers, and American soldiers (from nearby Fort Snelling) lived in close proximity. Today, St. Paul is known for its neighborhoods (referred to as 15 small towns with 1 mayor). Famous folks from St. Paul include the author F. Scott Fitzgerald and Peanuts cartoonist Charles M. Shulz. AI must be popular here, because the venue website said this is the 6th year in a row AI has appeared there.

Tomorrow, Aug. 5 (also birthday of my daughter, Linds, who will be 25!), Chris will be in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Milwaukee, originally settled by French missionaries and fur traders, is the largest city in the state, and the 25th largest in the US, with a population of close to 600,000. Milwaukee was once the brewing capital of the world, home to 4 different breweries (Schlitz, Blatz, Pabst, and Miller) and only Miller remains. It is a significant employer in the area, employing around 1700. Milwaukee has revived its downtown area, with a riverwalk, museums, and new condos and lofts as some of the additions.

That's it...Chris, enjoy your next two performances! Risa

To Amanda & Bmorebamma,
From GDA,

AARP, to join you presently have to be at least fifty years of age but that may change. Over time the age requirement has come down from 65 years.

Amanda - My sister, the nurse, says hello. She knows the basic outline of your current health situation has already added you to her prayers.

Bmorebamma - the current annual dues are $12.50 for yourself or yourself and spouse or partner.
Liberace was around from the “Jitterbug” to “Disco” and a little beyond.

Chris - about a year ago the magazine had a cover story/profile on Paul McCartney because he then was just 64. Curio fact: there is only two days difference between Paul McCartney (June 18, 1942) and Brian Wilson June 20, 1942) in age.
Somehow, a year ago, I don't think you would have ever imagined that any of your audience discussing this particular subject in this blog. The difference American Idol has made.

Other.
I wore white saddle shoes with brown saddles to my First Holy Communion, the only non -white thing I wore that day.
I also worn “Desert Boots” and “Exersoles”, Thom McCann’s version of the “Earth Shoe”, for the next two week I felt that I was wearring Mickey Mouse’s shoes. I have a pair of Dingo boots but was never really comfortable wearring knee high boots. There is a pair of “Wing Tips” in the closet I haven’t worn for awhile
As far as sneakers, on the rare occasion I wore them, they were “Keds”. I and most of the people I knew always thought of “Converse” as the other guys.
Like so may others have posted, I didn’t know what “Chuck Taylors” were until I researched them because I always knew them as “Converse All Stars”. and at this moment I am wearring a pair of “Tommy Hilfiger” running shoes.

My now 25 yr. old daughter is all excited...as a birthday gift, her two roommates are taking her to see Chris Daughtry tomorrow night in LR at Robinson. He played here a few months ago at a place called Juanita's that features a lot of up and coming bands. But Juanita's is a much smaller venue than Robinson, so he's obviously drawing bigger audiences these days. I hope next year for her birthday, I can treat her to a Chris Sligh concert!

I still have my Dingo boots too. Gray calf length ones. I wore saddle shoes as a kid. I think that saddle shoes were very popular in the 1950's, (the height of Liberace's career) although both Liberace and saddle shoes were both around for decades. Actually, saddle shoes still exist. I remember the Earth shoes and probably still have a pair in the back of my closet somewhere. We also called sneakers Keds. Maybe it's another north/south thing.

So, I havent had a really good day, mostly just laying down and hanging with my good friend oxycodone. But my daddy just called and made everything better. The army is going to let him come home from Iraq early. So he will get to spend time with me before i go into the hospital and he will be here for the transplant. We already have a little bit of a get away planned, we are going to head to St. Louis to watch our Cardinals play and go to the zoo. Its going to be great to have the family back together, My dad, my 2 little brothers and me. Im really excited. Anyways i just wanted to share my good news with you guys.

HstryQT said...

So I went to a family "Pile In" today in the mountains of Virginia(how hick am I? I know), and my cousin AND my crazy Uncle Greg were wearing Converse All Stars! (now known in my mind as "Chucks"). I just thought that was so random because I"ve never seen either of them wear them before - and we were having this discussion on Chris' blog. I tried to explain to them why I thought the fact that they were wearing Converse's was so funny - and they just didn't get it. Ah well.

I did get a history lesson out of it from my uncle. He said that he's known them as Converse's too - but that Chuck Taylor was the basketball player who wore the All Stars all the time and that's where they got the name. Back before the days of shoes sponsoring bball players. :) Also he joked about how when he was growing up you had to make sure you had the ALL STAR on the back or they weren't cool.

My other uncles said my Uncle Greg must've been in the midst of a mid life crisis - - he did look quite ridiculous in his beard, shorts, and high top Chucks.

Lori

Hey guys,

I did an interiew in Omaha with the local fox station and had a great time...I taught the reporter how to dance...it was hilarious. I've heard they have the interview up, but I can't get it b/c I don't have Window's Media Player. Can someone go over and watch it and let me know what they showed of me?

Hey Chris they have you talking about everyone being friends. And then they have you talking about how next years idol wont be as good because your not on it. Then it went back to the reporter who was laughing at what you said. They did show you preforming to.

Oh everyone thanks for your prayers cause today im feeling great, i was able to eat today, something i wasnt able to do yesterday. Anyways love yall.

risalea said...

Now how could they cut the dance instruction part? That's just wrong! : ) Risa

Could you be any cuter? Darn, they cut out the dance part, but did show you dancing on stage. Alot of talk about how close you all are. They showed the part about you saying next years AI won't be as good because you won't be on it. So true......

Marley said...

WellI can't get it either - that's the one problem with Macs - you try to download windows media player - and it just doesn't work.

ChrisSligh said...

Hmmm...that's what they showed. I saw some uproar over what I'd said, so I wondered what had been edited in. Haha...I remember that comment. I think it's hilarious that people take me so seriously...I mean, when I do interviews, I try to make it as fun as possible and simply say as many outrageous things as possible. Yesterday in press I said I wanted to beat Phil's bald head (joking that Phil was a family man, but such a jerk - right after I had talked about how close Phil and I were)...the reported almost choked on her mint...it was hilarious.

The Omaha interviews were a ton of fun...I was cracking the reporters up with just stupid little cracks about the show, etc. I'm surprised they didn't show me giving her a dancing lesson. I told the reporter that I'd like to give her a class in Chris Sligh's American Idol group number dance technique. Basically, you make a dead pan face, allow your arms to hang freely and step-touch left, step-touch right. The camera man was cracking up. Yeah, it was stupid, but really funny at the time.

I figure this: hey, there are 9 people who came in before me...if I'm gonna get media time, I just have to have fun with it and give them good tv that they can use. If they don't use it, oh well. I had fun doing it.

Anyway, thanks for looking that up for me.

Chris

Cathy Storms said...

Here's a picture of the front of the shirt I wore last night http://a371.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/87/l_5547fa1b8df159952b17ab240b25fe8a.png

Carmen, super Hero video! (and I love the credit at the end to the Core Fan, heehee)

Tawny--that shirt is the cutest! nice job. Very cool that you got to meet Chris, and I'm glad you enjoyed the show and noted everyone's growth since the show.

Tawny,
Love the pic of you wearing the shirt. Now we just need a pic of Chris wearing his! LOL

Chris - what do you think of Carmens idea to try and get Hero as the theme song for the show Heroes? It would be great exposure!
And it fits amazingly well.

Chris, in your interview from Girlygirl45's link to ricky.org, you mention that before AI you had done 5 albums. Well, we all know that TACOSB is one of them, what are the other 4, and how would the Fro Patro go about buying them?

for those of you who couldn't watch the omaha interview on that website, i put it up on youtube. :-)

Hey guys,

I released my first album in 2001. I released it under the pseudonym Berg. The name of the album was Vessel. It was a very acoustic album recorded for free with a friend. The album sounds like crap. It was recorded on a 16-track digital recorder and I used digital drums. It was not a great record. I sold about 3,000 copies of that one. I currently have about 10 copies left. I may at some point re-record some of those songs for special downloads for the fans...but I really think this album should be buried...it is very early Chris Sligh and very, very church-oriented.

I released my 2nd album in 2002. It was under Chris Sligh at this point. The name of the album is Someone Just Like You. This one was aimed at the church, but I moved from straight acoustic music to a little more rocking, though I must admit in listening back, it was still very acoustic driven. It doesn't sound quite as bad as the first record, but it sounds pretty darn bad. I recorded it for way too much money at a local studio in Greenville and got ripped off big time. The producer/engineer oversold his talent. The album has a couple of good ones, but is ultimately pretty crappy. We sold about 2,000 copies.

I've thought about taking the best of the first 2 records and recording them on my own and releasing them for cheap downloads on my website. Let me know what you guys think of that.

Half Past Forever, Part One, recorded an album in Nashville with the producer who I will work on part of my solo album with - a guy named Stephen Leiweke...he went to college with Jars of Clay and produced their indie album. For those who don't know, the original formation of HPF was 2 lead singers - I was the guitar player and 2nd lead guy...the other singer was the frontman. We both wrote (him from piano, me from guitar), and it was a good team. He left the band soon after the album released in 2005. We continued without him. We sold about 5,000 copies of this record. It was self-titled.

Also in 2005, the band recorded B-sides from our Nashville sessions, as well as some new tracks, which we titled (cleverly) Besides... We basically made the album available as a bonus to the actual album for $5 more. We sold about 1,500 of those.

Both of these albums were very church-oriented, but you can find a taste of my current songwriting in the songs on these records. I actually have 2 copies left of Besides... and like 30 copies of the original HPF album.

And of course you know Take a Chance on Something Beautiful. At this point, we've sold about 25,000 copies.

Hope that helps.
Chris

LLL,

Thanks for putting up that video.

That totally wasn't the guy I taught how to dance...it was a girl!!!

And that was supposed to be a pickup for next season's American Idol! Basically, what stations do is they tell you to read from a script to do pickups for the station. You know..."Hi, I'm Chris Sligh and you're watching Fox 42 the home of American Idol"...usually, interviewers know I'm a dork, so they have me do a regular one and then they tell me to ad lib. This was my ad lib.

I'm such a dork. I thought they'd wait till next season to show it.

It must have been ABC that I taught how to dance.

The download idea sounds like a good one....low cost on both sides, for you and the fan. I, for one, would love to hear some worship music from you. I know that you aren't wanting to be known for that at this point, but your Communion song is so precious to me. I've taken to listening to it early on Sunday mornings to get my mind ready for worship. (we partake in communion each week) Other songs in that genre available for download would be appreciated. Have a great day! Risa

That would be really cool to make some of the older songs available for download. It'd be fun to hear more of your musical journey. I agree with Risa that hearing some worship music (via download or whatever other means) would be awesome. Then we could at least pretend that we were lucky enough to be part of your home church congregation. :)

But first things first - I can't wait for the upcoming album!

Downloads of some of your earlier music would be really cool. How about something from the exciting Mr.Brown? I think the title is leave the light on????I heard it on myspace & fell in love with that song.

Chris,

Loved the interview up on Rickey.org, it was true blue Sligh and they really gave you some decent time to talk for a change. Great stuff!

Hey, you ever feel like selling any of the earlier albums, I'd love to get them! Course I'm sure I'd have to fight my fellow fro-patroers for them, so maybe that wouldn't work out.

Hope you are having a great week!

Ill~the youtube video is not working this morning...Could you put it back on? I would love to see it. Thanks

It'd be a great idea to make some of your first recordings available. I'm sure most, if not all of your frequent posters would want them. Do any of those 5 albums include the recordings you did with the exciting mr. brown? I wondered if you recorded more than those 4 songs on the myspace. Leave the light on has this kind of country vibe to it (to me) and I really like it. I didn't expect to hear more of a country rock song from you but it's awesome.

Tomorrow I go back home, yuck. I'd rather stay up here in Milwaukee. I'll upload my pictures late tomorrow night when I'm home and post a link for you guys. I'm glad you all like the shirt :) All 6 of the other idols I met (Besides Chris of course) were saying how awesome it was and asked if he had seen it yet.

Today is Aug. 7th and Where in the World is Chris Sligh? Rosemont, IL, a village of over 4000, between Chicago's O'hare Airport and downtown Chicago. Its daytime population and employment base exceeds the actual number of residents, due to the large number of hotels and office buildings in the area.

Tomorrow, Aug. 8th (also my birthday...big #50!) Chris will be in Moline, IL, home of.....drumroll please.....Deere and Company, otherwise known as John Deere! (maybe they can give you the hook-up on some t-shirts, Chris!) Moline's population is over 40,000, but it is one of the Quad Cities, along with Rock Island, and the Iowa cities of Davenport and Bettendorf.

That's it! Risa

To Chris,
From GDA,

I guess I need a better working definition of “dork”.
My image of you is something decidedly grander, most interviews have revealed you to be rather thoughtful, when you aren’t having fun and, on occasion, a risk taker going for the laugh.
You sound like you enjoy interviews and the attendant repartee, and are hardly self-conscious.

Do the early albums fully deserve the rather harsh evaluation you give them?
1) They did sell a couple of thousand which are regional sales, if not local, which is something.
2) Given your then skill level were they the best you could do at the time without interference or compromises made or enforced by the producer?

Two artist who were at the mercy of their producer early in their careers commented.
Michael Nesmith on his very early pre-Monkee recordings describes them as “Baby pictures with weird makeup“. Captain Beefheart describes his album “Strictly Personnel” as being “Diamonds in the mud”.

I referred a co-worker to the posted “Communion Song” and he was quite appreciative, for him the church aspect was a plus.

If you do record new versions of past songs for release, it would being interesting if you included the original recording to get a feel of the person you were then and how much growth has occurred since.

Fraudulent interviews:
In addition other interviewees complaining that on air personality wasn’t the person who actually did the interview, I have seen interview discs which give the DJ the option of playing the complete recorded interview and the option of reading the questions from a script and playing the recorded answers.

Roy Wood was the founder of the Move and the Electric Light Orchestra. This song was recorded while the Move was recording their last album “Message from the Country and was becoming ELO, which their first album was recorded during the same sessions. I would of liked to included the song “Forever” but I couldn’t find one with loud enough audio. It got good notices when new. Also the original single has the label check “thanks to Neil Sedaka and Brian Wilson for their influence.

Jane Wiedlin was/is a member of the Go-Go’s, who did “Our Lips are Sealed”

Enjoy, I hope

Chris, some downloads would be very cool. How churchy is churchy? maybe you could put a little crucifix icon next to the super-churchy ones for us heathens. We would be warned, and I'd probably check 'em out anyway to learn about the Evolution of Sligh.

Chris, I'll be first in cyber-line waiting to download!

25,000 copies sold of TACOSB - how cool is that (sayeth the Taco Bell dog - lol)

So happy to read that you and Sarah got some time together, and that you have agreed not to go any longer than 2 weeks without seeing one another. You are the cutest couple.
