Ramblings for the day (8-8-07)

So, 2 days ago, I started a ramblings about Chuck's. I think I'm going to make this a feature of my blog. Sometimes I just think of really stupid things and feel like making a blog about it. I'll call it ramblings.

Today's rambling:

Today, as Rich, Mindy Doo and Kiki were singing "I Heard It Though the Grapevine" I thought through the lyrics. The lyric on the 1st verse says:

"Oh, I bet you wonder how I knew
Baby, 'bout your plan to make me blue"

And it got me thinking about the word "blue". If I wrote a song today that included the word "blue" in that context, I think it would be thought of cheesy and over the top...I think mainly because the word "blue" is not really used in that sense in our vernacular today. However, I got to thinking...when Marvin Gaye wrote that song was it cheesy then? Or was it part of the common language, so it was accepted? And I wonder if blue will ever be vernacularized again in modern language?

Just rambling.

To Chris,
From GDA,

Like everything else language and word usage goes through fashion changes. I think of the word "cool" as being very fifties and sixties but it came back.
Awesome seems to have replace excellent.
Blue coming back is anyones guess and in 5 to 10 years it could happen but there are some people who persist to use it that way.
How about using the word grapevine in the way as it is used in the title? Can you think of an alternate word?

Incidently, Jeff Lynne when question about the ELO single "Showdown" sounding much like "I heard It Through The Grapevine' admitted that it probably is an influence as ELO was using "Grapevine" as warm song at that time"

What about that Eiffel 65 song?

To Chris,
From GDA,

What is your working definition for the word "cheesy"?

Would be same as "kitsch"?

I don't know that I would consider an entire song cheesy simply for using that particular word (or any other outdated vocabulary) just once unless it was in the chorus or some other repetative context.

Vernacular is such a wierd thing.Scant years from now it can seem corny or dated. Like me, talking to kids these days...we used to laugh at "Far Out!" or some other 70's term that was way-cool then. Now the kids smirk at the stuff we 80's folks say, and WE raise our brow at some of the hip-stuff we hear said around tv land!

Yeah I guess some cheesyness factor happens. Marvin Gaye can sing whatever he wants tho, because he sounded so cool doing it!

Have you ever thought about what a word can do or mean as years go by and the American slang changes? I have, I was just reading a blog from a person and they mentioned the word blue. Now to me I still think it means the same thing as it did when i was in my twenties. But this person said that no one uses blue anymore hmm do they mean just there age group and its the only age group that matters or do they not know what blue means besides a color. They were using it in the context of a song. Marvin Gaye's I heard it through the grapevine. Now how its used in this particular song Is that your feeling blue, So I am thinking what is used now in place of feeling blue. I am not sure because to me it is so descriptive and easier then saying your depressed or upset about losing someone. Can someone enlighten me what is used now besides feeling blue or singing the blues. I have always been partial to the Blues so I guess there is another name for that now since blue is dating ones age. Yes Chris Sligh it bothers me that you dished the word in Marvin
Gayes, Song I heard it through the grapevine it is a classic.

Anonymous said...

I think blue is still used in that context by the older generation but that's about it. I wouldn't consider it to be cheesy if it were in a song now but I'm sure many people would. This may make me sound like an idiot but I'd never heard of the word vernacularized until reading this blog entry... :P

Chris, I didn't notice until tonight that you painted your thumb nail black. I've seen plenty of guys do that also but for some reson I was surprised to see you with a painted nail.

ChrisSligh said...

Chatty,

I think I should point out that I didn't dish or diss (if that's what you meant) Marvin Gaye...I love that song (especially the CCR version). In the context of that piece of work, the word has never stuck out to me...we don't use "grapevine" anymore, either, as GDA pointed out, and that is what the song is built around. What I was ruminating on is just how vernacular changes, and if someone today wrote that exact song, it would be over the top. But maybe, just maybe, it's not vernacular at all. Maybe the word in that context doesn't work today because it's been used in this song so very well, that it just seems like a cheap imitation if I were to use it in the same way.

Anyway, there's no dissing...just rambling.

I think Carrie made a good point about the Eiffel 65 song, "Blue." But some might consider that the quintessential "cheesy" song of my generation, so maybe it's proving Chris' point.

Anonymous said...

Chris, here's a thought too--
if people didn't keep hearing the song,"Heard it thru the Grapevine," would they even KNOW about that word/usage? I bet they wouldn't. It's a holdover from another time, rarely heard in conversation anymore.Grapevine is a very old term, but Marvin(and the song) keeps it alive.I personally really like Gladys Knight's version. These classics help keep terms and slang in use that maybe we wouldn't hear, anymore eh?

Chris - I think you can use whatever word you want in a song if you can make it feel real. Well admittedly, I wouldn't write a song with "bajonga jongs" in it, almost anything else would probably work.

In 1971 Joni Mitchell wrote "Blue".
It has an emptiness in it, that is almost unbearable. I would consider this a concept album and
after rereading the lyrics - they don't seem particularly dated. In fact, they seem amazingly current.

Blue,
songs are like tattoos
You know I’ve been to sea before
Crown and anchor me
Or let me sail away
Hey blue, here is a song for you
Ink on a pin
Underneath the skin
An empty space to fill in
Well there’re so many sinking now
You’ve got to keep thinking
You can make it thru these waves
Acid, booze, and ass
Needles, guns, and grass
Lots of laughs, lots of laughs
Everybody’s saying that hell’s the hippest way to go
Well I don’t think so
But I’m gonna take a look around it though
Blue, I love you

Blue, here is a shell for you
Inside you’ll hear a sigh
A foggy lullaby
There is your song from me

There's a song Bluer Than Blue by Michael Johnson. I don't find it cheesy.

Hey There Delilah's lyrics is cheesy but it's a hit. Close To You by The Carpenters is probably the cheesiest song ever, but again, it's a hit.

I think listeners care more about the melody.

Just my opinion.

Have a nice day.

This rambling topic makes me think of what I call the "condensing of the American English language". It seems over time, the general populace uses more "common" words to describe something that used to be referred to by much larger, more complex words. Examples:

exquisite = fine
doldrums = dumps
exceptionally = really, really
don't you comprehend? = duh!
flabbergasted = shocked

and maybe?
blue = down

Possibly, the intelligent people that contribute to this forum can recollect additional examples?

Or:
Maybe you smart posters can think of other stuff?

Chris,

You and your random thoughts! I think the word Blue would be lost on younger audiences for sure. But then TimeYUpunishMe makes a very good point about Hey There Delilah's. The first time I heard it I thought, wow, this could so have been written in the 60's or 70's, yet it has mass appeal and is playing well. Maybe we are returning to some of those "cool" words of that era. There is that expression everything old is new again. That certainly is true for fashion, why not words?

amandarhea86 said...

Oh gosh that stupid Efial 65 song. I dno though there is a huge chance the word could come back around. The english language changes so much. I think knowing the pattern of things, it will, i guess that is how it is with everything. I went shopping and brought home a couple shirts and my mom goes i wore that when i was a kid. Who would of thunk it.

Sorry to go offtopic a bit guys but i need advice. Im cuttin my hair and givin it to locks of love. Then im dying it green and i really like C-Rich's hair style the minihawk so i think im goin to cut it like that. Should i do it before or after my concert, the richness thinks i should do it before so me and Chris will have matching hair. I dno though what do yall think?

risalea said...

I don't think "Blue" is that dated. It was the title of a Patsy Cline song (and yes, that was before my time), done again by Leann Rimes. I don't think using that term is cheesy at all.

Blue
Oh, so lonesome for you
Why can't you be blue over me?

Blue
Oh, so lonesome for you
Tears fill my eyes 'till I can't see

3 o'clock in the morning, here am I
Sitting here so lonely, so lonesome I could cry

Blue
Oh, so lonesome for you
Why can't you be blue over me?

And don't folks talk about the grapevine...as in the office grapevine?

Risa

And GDA, we're going to have some really far-out decor, hip music and yummo food. (whoops, that's Rachel Ray).LOL

I have never considered blue to be a cheesy term... definitely something I never use in MY vocabulary, but still not cheesy.

But hey---- what's wrong with cheesy lyrics anyway? I actually find them fun... they can be very light and uplifting. Something we all need once in a while, IMO ;) ;) ;)

amandarhea86 said...

DJ, well its going to fall out any way lol. Might as well have fun with it right?

ChrisSligh said...

Maybe cheesy isn't the right word...but I think that most people would kinda snub their nose at it I've actually thought of writing it into a song before, but it felt "not real" to me. So I chose not to. Also, there's the whole thing of it being an easy rhyme...writing seminars tell you to stay away from easy rhymes as much as possible...so many words rhyme with blue that it's an easy rhyme...I don't know.

Anyway, please don't take my ramblings too seriously. I'm not attacking anyone's vocabulary or anyone's generation...just making observations on life.

Peace and love,
Chris

Chris,
This topic is a true example of ramblings!

I think most of us wouldn't give it much thought and while the millineum generation (which I'm certainly not a part of but rather an early gen Xer) may not use that word they certainly understand it. While I'm not the greatest lyric writer (having only written a handful of songs in my time) my recomendation is that I would refrain from using it a rhyming word as it is done in Heard it thru grapevine, but if the word works in the lyric line then go for it...

rosalee said...

Blue - isn't that your favorite color, Chris?

The Beatles used "blue" in their lyrics all the time and their songs have stood the test of time. They were certainly not cheesy:

Baby's in Black

Oh dear what can I do?
Baby's in black and I'm feeling blue
Tell me, oh what can I do?

What You're Doing

Look what you're doing, I'm feeling blue and lonely,
Would it be too much to ask of you,
What you're doing to me?

Ask Me Why

I love you, 'cause you tell me things I want to know.
And it's true that it really only goes to show,
That I know,
That I, I, I, I should never, never, never be blue.

There's a Place

There's a place,
Where I can go,
When I feel low,
When I feel blue.
And it's my mind,
And there's no time when I'm alone.

For You Blue

Because you're sweet and lovely girl I love you,
Because you're sweet and lovely girl it's true,
I love you more than ever girl I do.
I want you in the morning girl I love you,
I want you at the moment I feel blue,
I'm living ev'ry moment girl for you.

Sometimes a whole song was devoted to "the blues":

Yer Blues

Yes I'm lonely wanna die
Yes I'm lonely wanna die
If I ain't dead already
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

In the morning wanna die
In the evening wanna die
If I ain't dead already
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

My mother was of the sky
My father was of the earth
But I am of the universe
And you know what it's worth
I'm lonely wanna die
If I ain't dead already
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

The eagle picks my eye
The worm he licks my bones
I feel so suicidal
Just like Dylan's Mr. Jones
Lonely wanna die
If I ain't dead already
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

Black cloud crossed my mind
Blue mist round my soul
Feel so suicidal
Even hate my rock and roll
Wanna die yeah wanna die
If I ain't dead already
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

On the other hand, they also used the expression, "down":

I'm Down

You telling lies thinking I can't see
You can't cry 'cos you're laughing at me
I'm down (I'm really down)
I'm down (Down on the ground)
I'm down (I'm really down)
How can you laugh when you know I'm down
(How can you laugh) When you know I'm down.

Enough for now.

Well I personally liked Gladys Knight version of Heard It Through the Grapevine. What I am trying to get at is when anytime you use the word blue in a song everyone knows your are talking about singing the blues or feeling the blues. You may not use it in everyday conversation but everyone knows the emotion behind being blue just like you know what the emotion is seeing red is anger. So what I am getting at is dont dismiss a word because its not used in everyday language. If you are creating a song with a certain kind of emotion then by all means use the word if it fits. Also you may not realize this but not just the 20 something year olds and younger buy cds in fact most of your older adults buy only cds they dont download. As far as the word blue goes i can think of so many songs with it in title Blue Hawaii, Blue Velvet, Dont It Make My Brown
Eyes Blue, I am sure there are many more. Point is as long as the word describes a emotion or feeling I dont think it ever gets old.

Rosalee,

I am in complete agreement on the recordings of the Beatles. I bought their recordings when they were being described as "Fab" and everything was "gear".
I have many of their albums multiple times. Including the English mono pressings because most albums had several songs that had different performances from the stereo pressings. As well as tracked down then unalbumized single tracks.

The point was, we were talking about changing fashions in langauge which in nearly forty years have changed several times as styles in clothing have.
People still have the blues, their now more likely to use another word.

Whoops, I'm falling down on the job. Busy day...I had to set up for a luncheon at the college today and go shopping for party food this afternoon.

Where in the World is Chris Sligh on Aug. 9th? St. Louis, Missouri. To save time, here's info from Wikipedia:

St. Louis is an independent city in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is bordered by the Mississippi River on the east and by St. Louis County on the north, south, and west. Sometimes written as Saint Louis, the city is named for King Louis IX of France. St. Louis is known for its French and German heritage and Victorian past. Two events at the beginning of the 20th century, the 1904 World's Fair and 1904 Olympic Games (the first ever held in the United States) are of particular pride to St. Louisans. In the 21st century, St. Louis has transformed from a manufacturing and industrial economy into a globally known locus for research in medicine, biotechnology, and other sciences.

The city has several nicknames, including the "Gateway City", "Gateway to the West", and "Mound City". It is called "Gateway to the West" for the many people who moved west through St. Louis via the Missouri River (first leg of the Oregon Trail) and other wagon trails. "Mound City" originated with the Native American burial mounds that once were common in the city. These were largely destroyed to level the ground as the city grew. The city is also sometimes called "St. Louie", "River City", or "The Lou"; and a popular abbreviation for St. Louis is "STL" in reference to the airport code for the city and the long-standing use of an interlocked S, T, and L by the reigning World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals baseball team (the St. Louis Browns also used an interlocked STL).

The City of St. Louis lies at the center of Greater St. Louis, which includes counties in the states of Missouri and Illinois, and is the 18th largest metropolitan area in the U.S. with 2,801,033 as of the 2007 US Census.

I have to add an additional element to the debate over words being in or out of fashion. It also depends quite a lot on the region of the country that you live in. Take 'Soda-pop' for example, where I grew up it was called 'coke'. It didnt matter if it was Coca-cola, pepsi, or RC - if it was brown and fizzy, it was coke. All the other flavors were 'soda'. When I lived in Michigan everyone called it 'pop'and thought 'soda' was a funny sounding word. I got a lot of 'Sorry - we don't have coke - is pepsi okay?' after I moved north. Words that may be cheesy to a northern city person may be normal conversation to a mid-west farmer and vice-versa. Same as the Chuck Taylors vs. Converse confusion. I wouldn't consider blue to be cheesy at all... 'awesome' on the other hand I have really gotten sick of.

Later,
Keri

Keri, down here we call it coke, my friend from Cali cant grasp the concept of it. I call it coke or sody. My grandma being from Michigan calls it pop and i think that is the funniest thing ever.

Awesome, is a word i tend to say way to much. It just pops out of my mouth along with the word Dude.

Anyways have fun in STL Chris, its a great city. I cant wait to go back up there, when dad gets home.

Gee - the late 1300s - now that's really dated!

Definitely not "cheesy" for the era the song was popular, which btw was my time. I often listen to the songs of the 60's and the words sound pretty goofy to me now when I compare them to what I hear today. In the 60's our songs were so clean and innocent, well, the majority of them were. There's still that controversay going on about "Louie, Louie".

I think you could get away with using "blue" in a song, without it sounding cheesy. People might think "where did that come from?".

Keep on rambling -

You're absolutely right. And not just words are being shortened. Whole phrases are also being abbreviated. I'm not totally used to it yet because I don't text.

An example of this was when I was on the fansite and one of the members came into the Shout box to have a conversation with me (probably one of the younger members). First he typed in that he was hungry. After a brief pause his next statement was "Sup". Well, I got a little confused. I thought he was talking about supper, being that just before he said he was hungry. It wasn't until after I got off the computer that I realized he probably was abbreviating "What's up?" (which has morphed down to "Whassup?" and then down to "Sup?" (LOL)

PS: I do eat Pop Tarts but not daily.

GirlyGirl, Don't know why I mix you up with Lori (HistyQT) my bad-Yea, I saw that shout out to Carmen, how jealous do you think I am? But figure she deserves it since she has followed him all
over the country. Also jealous of Kay's 20 min. sit down, but hey she's the admin of his fansite so can't begrudge her for that. And besides as everyone knows, I blew my big chance in B'ham.

Oh and school started in AL yesterday in most counties. They get next to no summer vaca anymore.

Guys i need prayer warriors. There was just a wreck and my cousin was involved they are reporting 2 possible fatalities thats all we know. We dont know how Anthony is. My uncle is a cop and that is all he has heard on the radio so far. Please be in prayer thate everyoen is ok please. Love yall.

amandarhea86 said...

Just a update on the situation. My papa just called Anthony is ok he is sittin up and talking. So still be in prayer with the other woman.

risalea said...

Praying now, Amanda, for all involved. Is your uncle the father to Anthony? Oh gosh, that's the phone call every parent fears, and being a police officer and hearing it on the radio...can't imagine.

And GDA, how true, how true! : )
Poptarts are one of those things I can't keep in the house when I'm making a concerted effort to eat better.....Strawberry, with or without frosting, toasted, with a cold glass of milk. Yum! (it's skim, does that negate the calories?)

And, I posted a few weeks ago about going on my first interview in years. I got the call today and they offered me the position...doing evals in pre-k classrooms for a state funded program. It's very flexible, and runs on the school calendar, so I'll still help my friend out at the college from time to time. I love working there...just love the college atmosphere. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.

Chris, so glad you got to chat with Kay. Enjoy your evening off! I know you won't be "blue". : )Risa

Amanda,

Glad your cousin is okay.

To everyone else...great discussion. It's interesting to see everyone's thoughts on it.

A couple of things.

1) My 2nd cousin Terry Fator is in the top 5, I believe on America's Got Talent. Terry is the ventriloquist who does impressions of singers through his dummy...it's amazing what he does. Anyway, check him out and vote for him.

2) I bought a new 80 gig iPod today...so that I can give my 30 gig to Sarah. She complains all the time about me taking all the music (she conveniently forgets that she has all the CDs at home, but I digress). Anyway, I'm excited as I place all my music on my iPod. Just a little side note...if you have music on your iPod that you want to copy to your computer, there's a program called iPod disk. Go find it, get it and use it...it's amazing and makes it easy to make sure you never have to rebuy a CD again (believe me I've done my fair share of rebuying)

Chris

OK, Chris, or anyone else with music download knowledge....I have zero experience with this.

I need a new phone (I'm carrying a VERY old Nokia...but it sure takes a licking and keeps on ticking!) I'm thinking about getting a Blackberry. I'll need a PDA as I'll be making my own schedule each week to do these evals. The guy at Cingular/ATT said they also play MP3's. So, is this the same format as what you play in an Ipod? Of course I'm sure an Ipod holds a lot more music, but would this hold enough to make it worthwhile? I'm sorry to sound so dense.

Any Blackberry users out there to give me any advice...Pearl, Curve, or 8800? The 8800 has GPS which sounded neat, and might come in handy since I will be going out of town with this job to schools I'm not familiar with. I think you can do GPS with the other two, but you have to buy something extra.

I'll definitely be blue if I spend this money and I'm not happy with my decision : ), so any opinions from current users are welcome! Risa

TO ALL,
From GDA,
I’ve heard acting described as behaving naturally in an artificial situation.
Marvin Gaye’s performance is effective and convincing that you listen to what his saying not how he says it.
David Bowie’s song “Starman” sounds spontaneous and fresh like you are hearing one side of conversation or phone call.

I think it would be of interest to check out “How to Speak Hip”, a comedy album by Del Close and John Brent released in 1959

The ten that I would like to review briefly here are: (1) dweeb; (2) doofus; (3) dirt-bag; (4) douche-bag; (5) dip-shit; (6) dippy; (7) dim-wit; (8) dim-bulb; (9) ditz, and (10) ditzy.”

To Any & All

Please explain "cheesy". Which Dictionary.com defines cheesy as "cheap and inferior".
I would have probably used "kitsch", which Dictionary.com defines as "Sentimentality or vulgar, often pretentious bad taste".
I guess if all else fails there is still trite, hackney, gaudy and clichéd.

It’s kind of weird that I happened to see Terry Fator & Emma, a vent playing straight man to his dummy. He performed quite well.
On America’s Got Talent the MC on stage was Jerry Springer and two of the judges were David Hasselhoff & Sharon Osbourne, Jack Osbourne‘s mother. There was this great sense of unreality to see these people together working this one show.

Will we ever get a peek at “Lock Stocks & Sylvia Romero “?

Risalea,
About getting a PDA phone/ with MP3 player: I happen to have Verizon but most of the phones work the same regardless of the carrier.

MP3's do not use Itunes format. You will need to use Windows Media instead. I personally find that both are about as easy to use. I actually prefer Windows Media but that is just personal preference. You will also need to see if the phone requires a Micro Sd memory card or a memeory card of some sort. They usually do if you want to to put any decent amount of music on your phone. This card will increase the memory storage capibilities just like a memory card does for you dgitial camera. I use a 2 Gig. with my phone.(they are relatively inexpensive on ebay) A 1 gig card will allow you to put about 300-400 songs on your phone. Increase the size of the card, increase the amount of songs. I know I can get a 4 Gig for my phone. Probably enough memory for the average musaic listening person. That would not apply to Chris. LOL --I am sure he needs the whole 80 gig on his Ipod.

As for Blackberry choice, you will have to do some research there. My hubby uses the Samsung I730 PDA and it does everything except dispense toliet paper. I have an LG and I love mine. It has the GPS and I get turn by turn directions if I want to find a place. Absolutely love that feature when I am traveling. I have camera w/ flash & video. I love the MP3 player too. I am not having to keep up with an Ipod and a phone and all the chargers that go with having two devices.
As far as Ipod goes, I have not had good luck with them. I have purchased three of them. One for myself, and one for each of my two sons. One son had the limited edition U2 Ipod (he is a big Bono fan) The other had the standard white 30 gig Ipod, I have the slightly older color photo 40gig capacity Ipod.
Every single one of them has had to be replaced at least once due to battery issue, etc. After a year, unless you buy an extended warrenty you are out of luck. I bought an extended warrenty for mine but not the boys. I am glad I did for mine because I have had it replaced three times. I am very careful how I take care of my things. (I usually get close to 300,000 miles on my cars) so I am not sure why I keep having problems with them. Whenever they replace your Ipod then you have to spend the time reloading everything back on it. There is no such thing as just replacing the battery with Ipod. They give you a refurbished used one, instead. Also you have to go to an Apple store or mail it in if there is not one in your area. The Ipod has great sound, easy to use but personally I am not going to buy another one myself. Too much money for how long they last. I have a small MP3 player that I use with my motorcycle that I just love. Cost me $50, uses one AAA battery and works like a jump drive so there are no cables. I hook that baby up to the AMP, speaker system on my Honda Magna, and I am on easy street. Other riders have told me they really like the quality of sound from my setup on my bike. I have had the cheap MP3 for over a year and no problems whatsoever. I feel like the $50 spent on it was a better investment than the $300 for the Ipod.
Hope this helps.

A comment both appreciative and sarcastic.

It makes Life better, but a struggle keep up and absorb new informantion and incorporate into our lives both professional and personal. This is easier with youth and progressively more of a challenge as one gets older.

To Chris,
From GDA,

I would be interested if you released "Typical" in some form.
It where my interest in your music began. "She's Not There" would be welcomed as well, but I think general consensus would be that all songs performed on AI be released.
Maybe as an Extended Play single, which if issued between the conclusion of the tour and December first could take advantage of momentum from the tour and possibly catch the Christmas market.

Any chance of tour album with "Another One Bites The Dust"* being issued? If not adding you performances to the release could make the EP a full fledge album.

Still we await your next studio album.

I just checked all the comments, and I can't believe nobody mentioned a song about "blue" for the current generation:

From Veggie Tales' "Madame Blueberry," who was sad that she didn't have all the things that other veggies had.

Slimpickens,

If you click on the image then you can view my profile and see a larger copy. It is a caricature I did of Chris in his infamous blue suit from the Sunrise concert. Yes, the girl in the bottom corner represents me (although she is portrayed as a much younger version of me) The sign says #1 Fro Patro. Tawny requested this drawing on a shirt. I had done one previously of just Chris but she wanted one with a fan in it. The back of her shirt contained the list of ALL THINGS SLIGH. If you go to Tawny's myspace she has some pictures posted with her wearing the shirt. Glad you enjoyed it.

gdahimself said...

To Brenda,
From GDA,

Not altogether accurate, I do believe it is a song about "blue" for the up and coming generation and their stay at home mothers.

Other:
"Can Blue Men Sing the Whites?" Vivian Stanshall's satire and criticism of successful and white Britons making a living sing the Blues which has no relationship to the reality of their lives.
First appearance on The Bonzo Dog Band album "the Donut in Granny's Greenhouse"* or in the US "Urban Space"

Amanda, I know I'm one of few people our to think this but I actually don't think C-Rich is hot. I don't think he's ugly or anything but he doesn't make me drool lol. I think Blake is pretty hot onstage when he performs but other then that he's just cute. They didn't do that little part of "Sexy Back" at the Milwaukee show, oh well!

GDA, they've never done a tour album before but I think they should make a tour DVD. I doubt AOBTD would be on it because it was only done once unfortunately. I doubt they'll do anything but it'd be awesome if they made a tour DVD, I think it'd sell.

Thanks for 'splaining the pic. I DID look at your profile for a closer look but still couldn't make out the fine print under Fro Patrol. Either my eyes are worse than bad or it is not meant to be read?
Anyways, I will go to Tawny's for a peek at the shirt.

As for Chris R:
I did not think he was that great a looker on TV. BUT when I saw him on stage in that beautiful suit and tie and then meeting him in person - WHEW!!!! Oh my goodness, his smile could melt steel. Words totally left my being and all I could do was gape! From what I hear, (from Sligh, I think) he also is the nicest guy anyone could EVER meet.

Which makes me think of a good topic to discuss here. Don't ya feel sorry for the rich and famous who are single BEFORE they make it big?? I mean how can they really know for sure if they are liked for themselves or their money and position?? Chris & Phil are blessed to be have gotten married in the lean years. Celebrity certainly adds stresses and strains to any relationship but the foundation was laid
when they were just regular joes and I think that, in itself is huge.

To Tawny,
From GDA,

Regarding CD or DVD releases:
There’s always the possibility of something, depending upon the recorded performances and the perceived demand that could encourage AI to release something.
I think a well programmed CD people would get more out of, like playing it the car when driving. A DVD rather demands that you stop and watch.
In recent years there has been hybrid bundling like CDs with a second disc that have 3 or 4 videos. I have seen a handful of times the CD and DVD packaged together.
There is always the possibility that numbers cut from the show could turn up as bonus material, which seems to be popular these days
Bottom line is this is speculation and wishful think.

Regarding Amanda,
Spoke with her in the Shout Box, she is concerned that she has been posting to often and she is taking a self imposed moratorium.
She did comment she was feeling well enough day to eat.

Regarding who’s hot,
If a group of guys were talking about the women on the tour like this you all would probably think it was sexist.
In any event, it is not the most elite discussion that could be taking place, particularly if you remain mindful that this the blog of a self professed Christ follower.

#2 You're not intimating that Christ followers don't or should not have physical attractions, are you? Or perhaps you acknowledge they do have them but should not talk about them? As a woman I've always seen it like the verse "Be angry but do not sin" - recognize/appreciate beauty but do not lust. Nothing "ungodly" has been said IMHO but perhaps it *IS* time for a new topic. :o)

GDA, it's not a big deal. I doubt any females in here would think it were sexist if any males talked about Haley or whoever. Besides, it's not like we're saying anything sexual. Looks are a big part of the music business and there's nothing wrong with discussing them. I highly doubt Chris will care, besides.. we already know he thinks Blake with his misshappen head is hot ;) (I'm talking about his shout out to the Blaker girls video.)

I'm with Carmen in thinking it's probably time for a new blog entry when you have time Chris.

Chris R and Blake, pphhht--nuthin'. Amanda, I'll give you Chris R's arms, but that's IT, lol.
Phil has lovely eyes, Mr. Sligh is a cutie, and he's got that whole soulpatch thing goin' on. Sanjaya may be a pup, but Bill Vendall, who happens to be the ripe old age of 25, is hot. I know he's on that tour bus somewhere. Maybe he's the one shooting all those webisodes, he could pop up anywhere...
GDA, hahaha, maybe you could go to confession on behalf of all of us red-blooded women, but remember, I'm your resident heathen ;-)
Chris may be devout, but he's got a wicked sense of humor.

My image of a Christ follower probably needs to be modified, possibly bodily replaced but I never attributed that much emotional stoicism to deny physical attraction or fascination , but assume after the odd comment or three they would tend to redirect their attention and energies to another subject.
Personally, if I get a loop in my head regarding the sensually or sexually of the physical appearance of someone, particularly someone I know, I usually wind up feeling I’m being quite superficial.

To GirlyGirl45,
A good working definition of soul patch would be useful, rather than inferential understanding derived from seeing it use and it’s reference to Chris’ writings.
Confession is supposed to be good for the soul, ergo one should do it themselves. Some maybe better served by renting a theater and presenting to a paying public their monologues.
If you truly are our resident heathen it would probably be most interesting to hear about your particular Occult beliefs and practices, as long as they aren’t based in anything Satanic.
But I do realize the remark was meant to be humorous.
Do you think Chris’ wicked sense of humour would extend to Simonizing?
Since Joni Mitchell’s album “Blue” is one of your favorites, did you buy it when it was first released in 1970? I once read an article where she spoke about, prior to recording, she played several of the songs at a gathering at Johnny Cash’s. Kris Kristoferson remarked that she was emotionally giving to much away.

The paint is still too tacky.

You just keep on posting. Any fan of Sligh's is a fan of ours!

Kerry,

I don't think there are too many of us here with my (our? haha) name. There's so many ways of spelling it and yet every time I tell people how mine is spelled they always ask me if I was ever covered in pigs blood or am about to go psycho on them. Sigh, it never ends haha. People are always trying to be witty with my name and it's like, yep, heard it before.

Carrie -

Well, now we can call you Slighcho!(LOL)

I was named after lotion! Seriously - it was that or Elizabeth. Unfortunately Dad won...

GDA, I'll answer this for Carmen. SIMB stood for Sligh is my Bono (from the TV guide interview.)

Ahh, I am not psycho! Just a little enthusiastic at times. And I really had NO idea there were so many Carries/Keris/Kerrys etc here. But that's okay.

Cause I'm obviously the coolest. ;)

But seriously, anyone with my name in any variation has to be awesome. It's a well-known rule.

Keri is so very... sorry, just had to.

GDA--You and I travel on different planes, my friend. Once in a while, a sliver of my plane overlaps with yours and I get a glimpse of understanding, but usually i'm just floating around out there on my plane, saying "huh?" So I'll give this my best shot.

Soulpatch--physical attribute of Chris's face. Google and Understand.

Confession--operative phrase "supposed to be," lol.

Heathen residency--how about paganism with a little "Idol worship" thrown in? ;-)

Chris's humor extending to Simonizing--huh? so i try to break it down: "to Simonize" =to attribute to someone Simon's caustic traits? ugh, not something I'd wish on anyone. Answer: no

Blue in 1970? yes (Kris Kristoferson always was a manly man type)

Sligh is my Bono and Slighko--love those!

Hello all!
Dj-- I just will! I love it here! I dont think I can come up with the stuff you guys do, but I can sure try! :D

Carrie--haha that is great! I would have never thought of the pshyco connection, but now thats all I can think about haha.

Keri-- Lotion?! Oo yea I have seen that LOL.. I was named after my greatgrand mother.. but she spelled it carrie, and I spell it Kerry.. i really dont know why haha but I like the spelling Keri..not many people spell it that way..

Rosalee--Slighcho! HAHA thats great! Nice job!

Carmen-- I thought it was so cool in the TV Guide interview.. A bunch of people were reading that, and I go ' oh my gosh, I know who he is talking about!" and noone believed me lol

Chris is doing so great on tour! I am so happy to read all these good reviews, because I know how good he is going to do on his album!

Love to all!

Carmen~That would be so cool to be at the last show. I have thought it would be fun for all of the fro-patro'ers to be at the last show if we could get good tickets. But, it is a little far for some of us but would be so worth it....

Carmen said...

Cathy,
There are still good seats available at ticketmaster for the last show. I checked this morning. Anybody willing to go to NH??

Going to the last concert is so tempting, but I think my husband would kill me! Arkansas and New Hampshire...not exactly next door to each other, but then I guess it is closer than CA! Risa

love the new avatar. LOL.

Cathy Storms said...

lll~You make it more tempting. I'm only 5 hours from you so whats 5 extra hours. My family will think I have totally lost my mind. Something to think about...

Carmen said...

Cathy,
I looked at airfare & hotel availbility. I found some good prices for both. If you don't want to drive you could always fly. The hotel I was looking at has complimentary shuttle service to and from the airport and is located just a few blocks from the concert venue along the water.

Cathy you have not lost your mind, you are just a great fan! If I do both of these concerts in NH, then that will make a total of 8 concerts in 4 different states. But hey, think how cool the very last concert is going to be!

lll,
Now that I know another Fro Patroer is going, I am going to see how all this will jive with work. We are already back at school here and I'm already planning on taking two days off the last week in September for a trip to Disney World with my hubby to celebrate our 22nd anniversary. I should know if this is going to work by Friday. What hotel are you staying at btw or are you visiting family in the area?
Glad you like my new avatar. I just had to do something different after Chris gave me the shout the interview.

Cathy Storms said...

Carmen, thanks..I am going to check into it when I get off work today & see if I can get someone to come with me. I'd love to drive & make it a vacation but that is really far away.....

To GirlyGirl45,
From GDA,

I did look up soul patch (soul patch). One the first groups of people it appeared on in the 1950’s were Jazzmen and Beatniks (kind of a proto-hippie).
This was the point in time many people believed the new popular music would be Jazz before Rock and Roll got established. It is curious to speculate what kind of Jazzman Chris would have made, assuming that Jazz caught his interest.

In the earlier post I actively avoided referring to Paganism because I thought it was term used to cover a wide group of local religions the Roman Catholic church set out to replace as it spread across Europe.
This is confirmed and more by the Wikipedia entry.

cathy - i was only kidding about driving! although i love a good road trip, i can't spare enough time right now to drive all the way across the country and back. so i'll be flying in. my friends and family have grown accustomed to me jetting off to see concerts - it's my favorite thing to do - so they already considered my mind lost a long time ago.

carmen - right now, we're staying one night at the hotel that i'm pretty sure you're talking about, and the other two nights at the one that's directly across the street from the venue. those seem to be the two most convenient. not a whole lot to choose from in downtown manchester, LOL.

and i'm with you on being excited to be there for the last shows. you're way ahead of me on shows for this tour (i've only been to 2 so far), but i love going to the first and last shows on any tour.

oh, and yay for trips to disneyworld! lucky you.

Cathy Storms said...

lll..yeah I knew you were kidding, but I really wasn't. If I had the time I would love to drive across the US to see Chris. But with work & other family stuff it would be impossible right now. Still looking into flying back but even this is a stretch right now. But, I would love to go to the last show.
