The Choice

Since early 2001, I have focused on attempting to make music my career. In 2001, when I started, I felt strongly about Christian music and Christians being involved with Christian music. I was in love with the music of artists like Steven Curtis Chapman, Michael W. Smith, Chris Rice, Bebo Norman, Caedmon's Call, Third Day and many more. When I first started this journey, I was a straight up "Christian artist" whatever that means...to me, it meant I sang music that the mainstream or people outside the church wouldn't "get"

I got into Christian music as a teenager (behind my parent's back) and honestly believed in it at the time. It changed my life in allowing me to see that music didn't have to be crappy to be done by Christians; that lyrics could talk of a relationship with Christ without being stupid or cheesy. I always listened to mainstream music but my main staple was always CCM (Christian Contemporary Music). However, over the last few years, I felt that CCM had made a leap into more cheesy and un-poetic (if that's a word). There were bands that broke the spell of the typical, so to speak, but for the most part, I became fed up with CCM. In the mainstream, there's as much or more bad music, but CCM is such a small world that it created the problem of not being able to find great music as often as I was on the mainstream side of things.

My band began to take off and get noticed, we had record deals on the table, but never had anything actually work out, and after 4 years of doing everything I was told to do to make it in CCM, I decided to take my band into the mainstream. It was a tough choice because at the time we were pretty consistently making $1000-3000 a show, and in the mianstream we went immediately to making nothing or at the most a couple of hundred bucks.

But immediately the band began to gain traction. In 4 months from the time we started to play shows in the mainstream, we played more "big" shows than I had in the 4 years of working the CCM industry. Then my friend talked me into trying out for AI and after making it to Hollywood, I had one of the biggest managers in the mainstream (with a list of big discoveries a mile long) contact me about the band, and ultimately decided that AI was the way to go...if I did well on American Idol instead of being a bottom of the totem pole band, trying to make it, we or I would be at the top of a label's priority list to make sure I/we were successful.

So, when I started the AI journey, I was pretty decided on being a mainstream artist or in a mainstream band. As I made it further and further in the competition, instead of thinking about all the possibilities on the mainstream, my heart kept bringing me back to CCM. It was really strange. I didn't really want to be in the CCM market, but my heart kept on returning to having something to do with it. Originally, I thought I would have a mainstream deal and just siphon the record back to the CCM market somehow. But the more I thought about it, I kept feeling that I was supposed to be a CCM artist.

It was weird...I actually felt like I was fighting God on it for a while. I really didn't want to be a CCM artist. But as I surrendered it over to God, I realized that I was passionate about making great music within the confines of CCM. In fact, this realization has happened really in the last 3-4 weeks. I have become very passionate about making music that would be equal or better than I would ever do on the mainstream with lyrics that deal honestly and freshly with my relationship with Christ.

Many people who aren't religous and who aren't "Christians" will wonder why I made this choice. Believe me, if I couldn't I wouldn't have. At one point I had multiple mainstream labels involved in the chase, but I decided several weeks ago to move on from those labels and focus on labels that would allow me to focus on a Christian record. The label's that I'm excited about are all labels that will not only allow me to make this kind of record but will allow me to succeed with this kind of record.

This last week, I met with the team that will be mine for the next few years. My management is a perfect fit. My booking agent is someone I respect and am lucky to have on my team. My day to day manager is one of the most fun guys I could ever imagine having on board. And the producer I think I'm going to be using for this first record literally produced several of my favorite CCM records of all time.

Will I sell fewer records? Probably. Will I make less money? Probably. Will this allow me to fulfill my dreams? Definitely. Will this allow me to make a career in music? Well, here's hoping.

I am lucky to be in the position of having choices to make. It doesn't make the choices any easier, but the choice has been made.

And I couldn't be happier.

I'm getting all sniffly here! Thanks for writing this post. Although I'm not in the music industry, at all, I've been caught between the CCM and Mainstream scene just as a listener, and it's great to hear you explain your journey as you've made such big decisions in your career. We all know how it is to have that God battle when we're making a big decision... your faith is pulling you one way but your mind is pulling you another and you kinda pretend for awhile that your mind is right. Then you realize that prosperity and happiness lie in God's plan. Mmmm, it's so nice to realize that and just let your worries go, isn't it?

Our decision to move from our families, our home, *our* beautiful Virginia was one of the hardest decisions either of us have ever had to make. We left many people behind that are devastated to see us and our future babies leave Virginia. But knowing that this is God's plan has filled us with such joy, and we're already seeing the blessings that He has in store for us. It's just amazing.

I'm so excited for your album and I know that it will be successful. Think big Chris -- maybe you'll be the one to bring more people to Christian music. Maybe you'll be the one to turn it back into what it once was in the old school Michael W. Smith, Caedmon's Call, Third Day era (all my favorites, btw). Don't assume that you won't be as successful. You might be surprised what God has in store!

I said this just a couple of posts ago, but I have to restate --- God doesn't add, He multiplies!

What a beautiful blog. I think we already knew.

Over the last couple of months I have talked about the direction you might take to many of my friends and colleagues. We came to the same place that you did but what a journey! I am often humbled by something Rick Warren said - in reference to journeys and their trials and tribulations and I think it fits here - God is more interested in your character than your comfort. How peaceful you must feel right about now. So go make CDs and inspire us!!!!!

Chris, at the risk of sounding a bit cheesy by quoting scripture, when I read your most recent post, this Bible verse immediately came to mind. I hope it will put some things into perspective for you.

Philippians 1:6 "Being confident of this, that HE who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."

Chris~I bet you are riding high right now. What a blessing to come to this decision. I am not surprised that you came to this decision but I am really happy for not only you but us also. I was never a big christian music fan until I heard some of your lyrics & music. Your lyrics have truly inspired me to believe again & I thank you for that more than you could ever know.
I wish you & Sarah all the best that this world has to offer.
Just promise you won't stop blogging with us...and please come to Southern California when you tour. Me & your biggest fan Deliah who is only 4 will be there in the front row.

Chris,
I am not surprised that you have come to this decision. I agree with hstryqt that you might just be the one who brings more people to Christian music. Your music has a way of crossing over into mainstream. I personally have never been a super big fan of CCM but I am a big Sligh fan, so consider me as your first cross over!

Chris -

I'm so glad that you are finally at peace and are happy. It must have been a bit of a struggle to come to a decision with all of the choices you had laid out in front of you.

You know, in some ways you're not that much different than my dad. He has a strong tenor voice and loves to sing his heart out in synagogue every Saturday. You both believe in God - it's just that Jesus Christ belief that's different.(lol)

I, myself am not religious at all. I definitely can't relate to finding "beauty in the cross", but that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy your music. So far, much of it can be interpreted in more than one way (like "So Easy").

I thought that I would be disappointed if you went this route because I felt you would not get the optimum exposure and success that a talent like you should have. However, seeing how happy you are, I'm sure that you are doing the right thing and that you won't regret it.

And who knows what the future will bring? Somewhere down the road you may decide to branch out and embrace the mainstream world as well....

My business card has Proverbs 24:16
about the just man who falls seven times but gets up again. For me this represents all of us. the "human condition". I like to fight...it is just my nature....hence the name badpacifist. Would like to be a pacifist but I would just be bad at it. You MUST listen to the quiet voice that sometimes is so loud it is deafening. Fighting for what is right at all costs is the absolute best way to say thanks. My Christian walk as a father, husband, and grandfather, can be summed up in two simple words, profound gratitude... Bet Sarah is so proud of you right now.

Chris, this post made me so happy. I'm complaining all the time about Christian radio and the music that is being played these days. It's so corny and predictable sometimes (not all the time, of course)! I can not wait until you get your music out there and hopefully I'll be listening to it on 91.9 in Charlotte, NC this time next year!!

Best of luck to you!

Chris,
This blog entry makes my heart swell! So happy to hear of your decision to bring your caliber of music into CCM. As you say, it is sorely needed.

I will continue to pray for you and Sarah and look forward to your career and ministry to those inside AND out of "the church".

Was wondering if you had a chance to read any of the Charlie Peacock book I gave you. It deals with so much of what you have been struggling with - all that is right and wrong w/CCM and what can be done. Makes for fascinating discussion.

The 6 artists you mentioned, BTW, are also 6 of my favorites. The more I know of you, the more you seem like a good friend I just happened to meet at school or the coffee shop or where ever. This is the first time I've met a good friend on a reality TV show! Whodathunkit??

And because of this blog, the circle of like minded friends just keeps getting bigger.

Chris, I respect your decision, especially given that it sounds like precisely the right decision for you. I think you even got some additional insight about yourself. I'm enjoying your demos. Some are more messagey than others, and the freedom of picking and choosing via iTunes is therefore appealing to me. I'm very pleased for you, and I know you've made a lot of people very happy. Good for you!

Hey Chris, just catching up on my blog reading (need to update mine badly) and was glad to see this. We are on similar paths. "Christian" entertainment has become so watered down and misguided that many creative people have decided to pass it over. Others see it as a goldmine and are looking to cash in.

What's missing is the people who are truly called. People who have passion AND talent. I dont think you will be making Christian music for Christian people. I think you will be making great music for people who love great music. If you do it right, it will spread beyond the original audience, just like hip hop, grunge, etc.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for sharing your heart, I'm sure this was a tough decision but one that you seem to be at peace with after I'm sure, wrestling with God a ton. Like you mentioned in your post, will you make less money and sell fewer records? Maybe - the advantage you have is being a child of God and knowing that you are protected and provided for at all times. My family and I will continue to pray for you and Sara throughout this journey. Praying and knowing that God will continue to bless you beyond anything you ever asked for or thought of. (Eph 3:20)

Good choice, and I'm glad you made it. My perspective's from a devout Christian who, at age 25, has never listened to Contemporary Christian Music.

Of course, I really do want an alternative to the secular entertainment industry, but it has to be able to compete with all the other things that people can do with their time or spend their money on. Up 'til now, for me, CCM just hasn't.

My reasoning has been similar to yours, plus some individual things. Mainly that I didn't grow up Christian, and it's been a long, hard road to the faith. My walk's been more about the Hell apart from God than the peace under Him. So, to me, whenever I listened to CCM, it came off as sorta thin and Christian-seeming as opposed to the life-changing unexplainable stuff that I'd known.

Still, I've always had the nagging feeling that there might be some stuff I'd like there. I think you (Chris Sligh) could pull a lot of new people into that genre with you. I know I'm much more likely to buy your CD now than if you'd taken the other road.

Ya dun good, Chris.

Chris,

God has a way of dealing with us in ways we didn't always plan or want, doesn't He? I think you will be a great addition to CCM. As I'm sure you know, it needs a real kick in the right direction. I've been a fan of many bands in the past, but lately . . . . well, you know.

I saw you at the concert last night in Rochester and you were amazing. Not that everyone wasn't really good, but I thought you were the best and I'm not just saying that here and telling Blake the same thing on his blog. *giggle* I really felt that you stood out from the crowd. In a good way.

Plus, I got your signature on my ticket and you posed for a pic. Remember me? I leapt in the air and gave an ungainly fan-girly squeal (and it's not pretty in someone my age) . . . Obviously, you can't remember me out of everyone there, but still and all, thanks!! I honestly drove all the way to Rochester from Buffalo just to see you and it was well worth it. You did look really tired, though, so try to get some rest (if that's possible).

Just promise me that when you do your tour you come here, OK? I'm getting too old for all this cross country driving and Buffalo is the second largest city in New York State, after all.

Sorry, I got carried away. Anyway, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and your music with us. Loved the songs on myspace, btw.

Hugs and Hershey's kisses . . .(I'm not trying to be stalker-y or anything, I'm just giddy from lack of sleep),

Hey Chris -

When you first got our attention - you were singing "Don't want to be the typical" - Yet it sounds like internally you were struggling with trying to be the typical, i.e. mainstream.

Now God has brought you full circle and is showing you that your path will not be typical - but will give you the opportunity to blaze your own path in a genre that needs some new energy.

Your songs transcend boundaries - so don't put any self imposed restrictions or be resigned to less sales and fans. If you do your thing, speak your heart, and let God handle the rest, big things will happen for you.

Peace -

Hey guys,

I wanted to point something out here real quick. I received a couple of emails and a couple of message on myspace about this interview...especially this question:

Q: What should people expect at the show?

A: Some people take "American Idol" so seriously. We're not the Police, we're not trying to make life-changing experiences. We're doing cover songs. It's like the ultimate karaoke with a world-class band behind us.

I thought it was pretty clear, but wanted to make sure it's know...when I said we're not trying to make life-changing experiences...I was talking about the live show. My point, which I think came across, but apparently did not, was that some people (the reporter and I were talking specifically about newspaper writers) come in thinking this is a serious concert. I told them we're just wanting to make it fun for the audience. In fact, I used the words amusement vs. entertainment. We are amusement. The Police are entertainment. There is a difference.

Obviously, as I have said before on here, American Idol was a life-changing experience for me. But the live show is not a life-changing experience for anyone, I think...it's just great, clean fun.

Chris

Cathy Storms said...

Agree with you Chris...great, clean fun that any age can enjoy. No the concert didn't change my life..but I sure had fun. Probably one of the most fun concerts I have ever been to. Though I don't think I agree with your distinction between amusement and entertainment. I was definitely entertained at the AI concert. Maybe I'm easy though. LOL

Heh--back to that Pitts article. Well, I took it as totally witty, and meant lightheartedly.I really laughed about the poptart thing!:-)

I knew what you meant, and the show IS entertaining and good fun. I don't know what the interviewer was like in person, but her attitude in writing it all seemed meant to humanize you all. I liked that. So many articles try to tear the Idols down, or take cheap shots, and she didn't seem that way at all. As for you, you didn't sound bad or mean at all-- no worries.

Dear Chris,

I think it is very human to want to create. At the end of the day no amount of money can ever take the place of creating something you truly believe in instead of something you are creating to make money.

It seems to me that you have the perfect balance between earning a living and creating art.

I look forward to hearing the new material!!

I never really listened to CCM until a few years ago. I didn't think I'd really be interested in it but for a while that was all my sister listened to and I found that I really liked a lot of the music. I'm still not huge on all of CCM but are some great, great songs out there that I'm glad my sister introduced me to. Basically what I'm saying is.. I'll definitely be buying your album.

If I were a flavor of poptart, I'd probably be "awesome" too. lol.

I didn't think the answer to the question was unclear. If anything it's the interviewer's fault for saying "show" instead of "concert." No worries - I think you've stated enough that the AI experience has been life-changing, that people wouldn't take what you said the wrong way. (Obviously some have taken it the wrong way though - and those people are just being nit-picky.)

I don't really want to go to a concert to have my life changed. For life changing experiences I'll go to church, camp out in nature, do some service for somebody less fortunate than myself...

... I don't think a concert should ever be more than entertainment, and - above all - fun. Even if the songs have a good message, I really think concerts are not the place to preach or teach too heavily... They are simply there for entertainment.

Those writers who go to concerts for a serious, meaningful, possibly philosophical time.. I think they're missing the point.

(Just my two cents.. I'll be quiet now)

TOP TEN THINGS I HAVE LEARNED FROM PARTICIPATING IN THE CHRIS SLIGH BLOG WORLD:

10. Do not try to compete with GDA in any kind of Trivial Pursuit game. You will lose. Badly. (love you, GDA!)

9. There's a WHOLE lot more that goes into the making of a record than the general public knows.

8.I have a twin who lives across the country from me. Two people named Rosalee and Risalea had to be separated at birth, right? LOL

7.Some of the most articulate, kind, and fun folks in the world are devotees of this blog (and I dare not list names, lest I leave some out)

6.Many bloggers on here should be running P.I. businesses, as they have tracking the Idols on tour down to a science! (my own PI--our dear Amanda!)

5.Chris loves us too much to leave us, as he tried to close the blog for the duration of the tour, but just couldn't bring himself to do it. : )

4. Visiting a blog helps you brush up on English skills such as poetry when reading/composing Sligh-kus and Slighmericks.

3. Blog reading also builds geography knowledge as one follows the Idols around the country. Some have brushed up more than others with many field trips to said locations. (go Carmen!)

2. Blog reading can be addictive, to the point of leaving the site minimized on one's work computer, lest comments be missed in the course of the day.

1. and the #1 thing I learned from reading Chris Sligh's blog: His voice caught my attention, but his words captured my heart. We love you, Chris (and Sarah, too)

Haha, since when have rock/pop concerts been intended as life-changing experiences? I got a kick out of your karaoke comment, especially since some journalists have used the K word as a putdown, to pan the concert in their reviews. You used it in a fun, entertaining sense. I'm looking forward to an enriching experience, albeit not a life-changing one. I'll be going with family, and I've agreed to report on my concert experience for a blog, which is more involved than I ever expected I would be. And I want to meet as many fans as possible. Concerts for me have always been a big ol' party, and this one has more of a family picnic feel to it to me, which I think will be a blast (with karaoke machine, lol).

I can't wait until you release your album and I know it will be great. You made a great decision and there are so many people supporting you no matter what :)

Fellow Fro Patroers,
Hey, if any of you can make it to the DC concert on Sept 9, 2007, I happen to have an extra ticket to the concert that I would be willing to give away. Just email me and let me know. If you are hesitating on going because of lack of a place to stay, maybe we can work something out for you. I don't want the ticket to go to waste and would rather give it to a Sligh fan than try to resale it. It is an excellent seat if you are wondering.

Oh, my gosh, Carmen, you are one generous lady. I would scarf that up in a second if I wasn't starting this new position. I got an email that had some good rates on Southwest (for these high gas days!) for travel in Sept. that have to be booked by Aug. 30th. For example, they have a $127 one way from LR to Dulles in DC. So if you take Carmen up on her offer, contact me and I'll forward you that email. Risa

Hey Carmen - on that note - if you or anyone can get to Philadelphia - September 7 - I have two tickets. FREE to a fan. Also good. They keep telling me that some of the front rows are blocked off, so tickets on the floor are actually closer than you think. I know you will probably be exhausted - but hey - it's for Sligh.

PS: Carmen, man, I'd love to have that ticket. Show is on Sunday, plenty of time to get to work by noon on Monday. Alas, the cost of traveling from Ohio would be the only thing stopping me.

To Chris and All,
From GDA

Life changing Experience.

Don't underestimate it, I've seen people on talk shows, two were actors, one a magician, who spoke of see a live show at 4 or 5 and deciding that then and and there that was what they wanted to be when they grew up.
You never know.

How may 4 or 5 year olds are likely to go see the Police?

The Police are taken way too seriously and can be as entertaining as a Chekov play with some of the lyrics that Sing is inclined to write.
They aren't getting particularly good notices on the current tour either.

I guess it depends on your expectations.

We can be supportive even if we are part of fanbases of other people, right? It doesn't stop appreciation, and goodwill, not a lick.

I was lucky just to get to the one show I did get to, but I feel tremendously grateful. I got to meet everyone, and was a thrill to see the Idols perform. Not only that, but it was a chance for us to be a part of surging goodwill, for Chris and for them all. That made me smile, long after the show was over.

To all of you still with shows ahead, enjoy it. We're cheering with you in spirit!

There is a tdf ticket booth for great priced last minute seats in Times Square and at the South St. Seaport Booth. Here's a link with more info: http://www.tdf.org/TDF_ServicePage.aspx?id=56

Kooshes,
You made me laugh w/your P.S. about the "other" Chris.
What is it about liking multiple idols that makes us feel a bit Judas-like?
At my meet n greet I was telling Phil how he's IMO one of the best voices AI has EVER had and he got all sarcastic and said "yeah, I see that shirt you're wearing". Sligh's My Guy was emblazoned on it! ha ha
To tell you the truth 8 of this years top 10 blow me away! Then add in favorites of seasons past and you realize there's enough love to easily spread around and it's OK. :o)

AND just because you are 21 yrs divorced doesn't mean you're totally unqualified to give marriage advice. Sorta along the lines of "if I can't be a good example, let me be a terrible warning!"

Risa loved the top 10.

Marleybone- I got my gift and it was awesome. I was expecting the Chris Sligh cd. But the Chris Rich poster. HA, you made my week. I opened it up so much just to look into those green eyes...ok ill stop now.

Slimpickens- i totally agree, i argue with people all the time. I love Blake, Chris, Chris, and Gina this year. But I plan on buying all there cd's.

Chris- Im so happy for you. God always finds away to make sure his will is done. What brought me to you was not only your voice, but your walk with God. I truely admire you Chris.

Oh and guys i got my central line in and it hurts...but the pain pills are amazing. haha.

love yall.

And I must say, it WAS weird meeting some of the other idols in the afternoon in Columbus and Cleveland wearing my Richness shirt. haha They obviously knew they weren't my absolute sold-out favorite, but I still loved giving them the love, ya know? 'Cause you're right. So many of them are so wonderful!
But, the reason I don't want Chris coming up to me when I'm talking to Chris* is because I'm likely not to even see him. HAHA

All this talk about the Fro Patro party next summer had me google-mapping the distance between Indy and Nahsville! I was hoping it'd be closer. 5 hours is a lot for the hubby to have to agree to, but oh well!

Lori, five hours isn't bad...that's about the distance from Little Rock. Of course, with a baby in tow, it can sometimes seem longer (much experience on that front! LOL) Of course, we haven't heard a peep from Chris about our Nashvegas plans. Does he know he's having houseguests! : ) Just kidding, Chris!

And if this all comes to fruition, we'll definitely head on to the Smokeys, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, etc. as part of the trip. I'm thinking we'll head on east and go visit the Biltmore in Ashville, NC, a place I've always wanted to go. Might as well make a trip of it! Risa

Also, I must admit to having been rather jealous because I always wished Chris* would talk to us in a blog, too. And, he really is a very sweet fella!

Hey Risa, be forewarned - the Biltmore is rather expensive to tour. I think it was around $35 - $40 when I was there about 1 1/2 yrs ago. ugh! Ya gotta be rich to even SEE how the other half lives.

I'm excited you decided to stay in the CCM market... although hard (I got signed under a label in 1989, only to have the label fold when Idle Cure fell apart) so we never got to record other than indie... before indie was big... lol.

On the subject of liking more than one Idol contestant, Let me tell you that I can completely relate! I truly voted for multiple contestants every week! I think out of the top 10 there are maybe two contestants that I didn't vote for at one time during the show. Literally that few. And I also voted for two people who never made it to the top 10 - Brandon Rogers and Rudy Cardenas (why Rudy, why??!! Why did you go out the first week??)and I am 90% sure that I will buy an album from everyone I voted for.. because I voted for them because I like their style and their voice.

I've often wondered if the Idols know or believe that several of these fans have more than one favorite (not all fans do, but a lot do). I mean, just because I wasn't wearing a Phil or Chris shirt, do they think I'm not thrilled to meet them? That I won't scream at the top of my lungs for them during the concert? That I won't run out to buy their albums when they come out?

I guess I'll end my ramblings... I'm sure your sick of reading them! :P

Happy Sunday! ^_^

amandarhea86 said...

I like your ramblings carianne. I have often wondered it too. I know our Chris doesnt care considering one of the first things he said to me in Little Rock was hey you Blaker Girl you. I like each idol for different reasons. Whether i admire them for their musical ability, or there walk with God, or how incredibly hot they are. I enjoy every single one of them. I scream for all of them, some a little more then others.

I voted for a few this year. Chris Sligh, Blake, Sanjaya and Sundance in the boys top 12. Gina, Jordin and Melinda in the girls top 12. Sanjaya in the top 12 till he got voted off then it was all Blake and Phil a little bit.

So now im rambling anyways very good questions Carianne.

Chris,
It sounds like, after much thought and prayer, you ended up just where you believe that you should be. What a great thing to have happen.

In regard to the CCM universe, I am guessing that there will be quite a bit of cross-over into the mainstream market. Partly because people will be curious about you because of AI, but mostly because there is a compelling quality to your music, and people are really hungry for truth -- whether they know it or not.

I think that is what strikes me most about your CD, is that you sing a lot about love, but in a very honest way. Not sentimental or sappy as is often found in mainstream music, but love as strong, deep, healing, hard. And that we are all desperately in need of it. That message crosses boundaries.

It will be interesting to see what comes out the rather ... um ... innnnteresting intersection between AI and CCM.

I can't wait to see, myself.

Anonymous said...

I like what you said, dr bob. The word "compelling" is a very good one, I think. :-) Right on.

There are lots of people in the world who have love and feeling in their heart, but not the ability to talk about it or let it out. I think Chris is lucky to have his music, that he can share it with all of us. I think in it's way, music can be a gift, like that. It touches alot of people, in different ways.

One never knows when they can have crossover appeal. If it's real, it might!

Unknown said...

I read your Nashvegas blog and felt your joy and excitement on making a decision; then read how you were going with the CCM route and I felt a momentary twinge of dissapointment. I consider myself a christian but don't listen to contemporary christian music. I started to hope that you would be a crossover artist; bringing christian music to mainstream. After reading Don Chapmans blog I realized you will do both- crossover to mainstream and pull us lagging christians over to CCM. I think Don called it being a light in the darkness. So thank you and may your light shine bright!

Amanda,
Just came from reading your last couple of blog entries and want to say I am moved. I admire you SO much and desire to DO something to help you through. I know I can pray (which is big) and speak words of encouragement to you but beyond that, I am frustrated.

He will see you through this.

Hey Chris- my daughter and I are looking forward to the Meadowlands concert tonight. I've been enjoying all the fan videos, but nothing compares with a live show.

I thought it what you said to TV Guide made perfect sense. You were talking about the show, not about your Idol experience, and a lot of the critics seem to be reviewing something the show has never claimed to be. I've been to life-changing performances- classical, U2, Springsteen- but you guys aren't sharing your own unique music on this particular tour, or trying to communicate a profound message. You're playing covers, entertaining, and having fun. And I can't wait!

Finally, congratulations on your decision. So glad you've chosen a path that satisfies you. I'm a practicing Catholic, but have never listened to CCM. However, I'll be following your work.

See you (and the rest of the gang) later!

THAT WOULD BE THE ULTIMATE!!!!! I FOR ONE WOULD BE THE FIRST TO BUY TICKETS AND THIS WOULD ALLOW
THE PUBLIC TO VIEW ALL THE DIFFERENCES YOU CHOOSE IN SONG WRITING. MAYBE EVEN OPEN FURTHER DOORS INTO MUSIC NOT LISTENED TO BEFORE...I KNOW THE AI GROUP HAS OTHER COMMITMENTS BUT IF THIS WAS POSSIBLE I THINK WE COULD ENJOY ANOTHER TOUR. MIGHT EVEN SELL A FEW EXTRA CD'S...

To Risalea & All,
From GDA,

Where in the world is Chris Sligh and the AI 6 Tour on August 28th and 29th?

The State of New Jersey: “In 1664, Charles II of England granted his brother, James, Duke of York, the land between the Hudson and Delaware Rivers. James presented the land to two favorites: John, Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret. He named the new land Nova Caesarea. Today the boundaries of Nova Caesarea (New Jersey) are exactly as set about in the original Duke of York's deed.”*
Caesarea is the original Latin name of “The Island of Jersey” given by The Romans, which had remained loyal the king during his period of exile.

In the Borough of East Rutherford: Prior to May 23, 1893, Boiling Spring Township**.
At The Continental Airlines Arena in the Meadowlands Sports Complex.
The Continental Airlines Area opened in 1981 as the Brendan Byrne Arena. There was a popular effort made to have it renamed as the Bruce Springsteen Arena which failed.
At about the same time there was also an effort made to make “Born to Run” the state anthem but some people had problems with the line “strap your hands on my engines”.

Also part of “the Meadowlands” is Giant Stadium where some people believe the missing Jimmy Hoffa may be buried.
The Rodney Dangerfield moment: The NY Giants move from New York to New Jersey and remain the NY Giants, lovely.

The New Jersey Meadowlands are not an expanse of rolling green fields but a wetland area ***, which is about 10 to 15 minutes west of the Lincoln Tunnel on Route 3.
The Lincoln Tunnel is the Hudson River crossing to midtown Manhattan of New York City.

As a New Jerseyan when someone says their going into the City, they mean New York City.
When people think of New York City, which has several boroughs, it is Manhattan that has all the famous attractions. If they are going to someplace other, they will refer to the borough by name, I.e. The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, etc.

To all my fellow Fro Patroers,

As many of you are aware, I had previously posted a quandry that I found myself in and I had asked all of you for some advice on what I should do. For those who missed my posting, I suggest you read the postings under the Nasvegas heading.

Anyway, I have decided not to get the custom paint job for my bike. My hubby pointed out that even though I am a big Chris Sligh fan and would enjoy seeing his portrayal fulling rocking out on my bike, the chance of someone else enjoying it, should I ever decide to sell the bike, ( I was aghast that he even mentioned this) would be very slim and might make it harder to sell the bike.
I still wanted to do something that would alert my fellow bikers that I am a Chris Sligh fan as I was cruising the streets listening to TACOSB. Anyway, I think I found the perfect solution to my dilemma. I think most of you will enjoy what I came up with. Please take a look at:

Rosalee & Carianne,
It is not detachable as it is powered by the motorcycle battery. However, I did find a small travel size scrolling sign that I have purchased for the upcoming concert in DC. It can be attached to your clothing with a magnet.
Chris please be sure to look for it when I am out in the audience with HstryQt and GirlyGirl.
One of the benefits of having the sign (Besides letting the world know I am a Chris Sligh fan) is that it actually makes my bike more visable on the road which is a major safety issue when you ride. It also provides an additional brake light.

Risa,
I am glad that you got to see Amanda.I pray for her daily that she will make a complete and full recovery.
Cathy, I agree with you. Chris's blog has brought together the most awesome group of people. I hope he realizes the positive difference that he has made in the world.

I'm SO jealous of all of you who get to go to more than one show. I've been trying to get my money together to go to Syracuse this Sunday, but I only have $40 to my name and the tickets are $55 so it doesn't look like it's going to be happening. My sister owes me money from the last concert, but I don't know. I'm sad.

Carmen, your scrolling sign is way too cool and to find one to wear at the concert...that's neat! Surely Chris will be able to see it if you are up close at all.

GDA, can't wait to hear your concert review. With the time difference, I bet you are already at the venue. So, since you won't see this until afterward, I guess the appropriate comment will be: "Hope you had fun!"

To a couple who didn't know...this was actually the second time I got to visit with Amanda. The first was when Chris was in NLR in July. She turned out to be my guideperson on how to meet the Idols! : )

And I can't tell you how wonderful it is to get back and type on a regular keyboard! LOL

I've got to go rest from my trip! Risa

Here is the link for St. Judes for anyone who wants to make a donation in Amanda's name. Its called the Caring Bridge; its a free web service for patients at St. Judes. She is too modest to mention it but it is a great way for everyone to show her some love & support while she is going thru her transplant.

Hey Chris -

Go over to MJ's (mjsbigblog.com). I left a very nice Nassau Coliseum Idol Tour review over there...

That is awesome that you also have a smaller version for the concert! where did you find those? They are amazing!

Amanda is cool, isn't she? She and I have posted on the same board for a while now, and she is just so nice. And so friendly! There aren't many kids in their 20's like her... And she definitely knows how to meet the Idols! Glad you got to visit her! ^_^

Carmen I love the new bike accessory! Turned out just how I pictured it would! Think I could convince Danny to put one on his bike?? (Maybe when pigs fly lol).

Less than two weeks!!!

I have been a fan since your first televised audition on American Idol. I have been reading your blog for the past several months. This is the first time that I have ever left a comment, but I wanted to let you know that I have so much respect for you today as an artist and as a person. I wish you all the best.

The show was great fun. There's some amazing talent on that stage and I can't wait to hear all of you do your own music. Chris, you were great! I especially liked how you and Gina sounded together. And the guy band was one of the high points.

We were there when you and Phil came out afterwards. You gave my daughter a hug and she was thrilled. I waved- there was another mom talking my ear off! You, Phil, Chris Rich, Haley and Blake all signed my daughter's program, so she's walking on air. Thanks to all of you for taking the time to come out- I know you must have been tired, and some of the screaming was a little scary....

Hey Chris -
I have been a fan since I saw you try out for the show - I love your voice and after reading your blog through the months, I feel like I know you a bit -- I love your current album and can't wait to see what you are up to after the tour. You have such a gift in making a song about something uplifting be so current at the same time. There are so many of us behind the scenes that are pulling for you --- keep up the good work! We need to all be better Christians so each of us can be in the best light we can be in this world that can be a bit dark at times -- thanks!
