Sligh-ku

Over at Americanidol.com, they have message boards, and I am noticing that several people are posting haiku poems and calling them Sligh-ku. This is probably one of the highlights of my life to see people writing strange haiku poems about me. Here are some examples of Sligh-ku:

gonna make hoff cry
will bust a move on paula
that cheeky monkey

and...

I bet he likes tots
a foot long coney will do
fro patro wig time

and...

they ain't seen the sligh
rock a chump like a vandal
representin' yo!

and finally...

a big floppy fro
will be going all the way
hollywood, baby

Hey Chris. Found this by googling your name. You seem like a cool down to earth guy from South Carolina. Just wondering if you went to BJ (Bob Jones University) at all. Both my older brothers did and I just wanted to check and see if you did. Good luck with Idol. I'll be rooting for ya.

Chris, my fiance found a link to your MySpace pages on an Idol blog before Idol aired, and he pegged you then as the winner of AI. After seeing your audition on Wed., I wouldn't be surprised if he were right. I wish you the best!

Yes, I agree that the Sligh-kus on the Fro Patro thread are a good reflection of your ingeniuity and wit.

I wish I was better at writing them, but I have a history degree, not an English degree. But now I'm just making excuses : ).

Good luck in Hollywood!!!

You're awesome. When you make it through, you have to sing (well, you don't have to, but these are my requests) "The Show Must Go On by Queen" and "I Believe In You by Stryper". Also considering singing "I Surrender by Celine Dion". You have that perfect rock tenor voice with a natural timbre that would sound great singing progressive rock. I wish you best of luck!

We have to put up with another week of the darn auditions!! I can't wait for the real show to begin! I've downloaded speed dialing software so I'm ready to vote for you!!!

Hey there, just ran into your blog. I'm surprised that it doesn't seem to be more widely read (based on number of comments / inbound links.) In light of this, I wanted to pose a couple questions, regardless of whether or not they receive a response.

Has life-as-you-knew-it exploded yet? You are about to become the subject of some serious scrutiny and inquiry from a variety of media outlets. Do you consider yourself famous (or even a celebrity) yet - because you will be very soon. Just wondering what being "on the verge" of something like this might feel like.

Thanks for reading, sorry if this got double-posted. -R

Chris man, I don't know what to say. Your performance on AI seriously gave me goosebumps, something that has rarely ever happened with any other song. I usually watched that show just for the bloopers, but for once, I think I'm going to watch and see what else you have to sing. I'll be voting for ya buddy. Go win it for all of your fans out there.

I also googled your name today... I was so glad I found you!! My brother and I agreed that you're pretty much the only talent we saw on American Idol so far this season. It's nice to see a guy who doesn't go friggin crazy with ridiculous, unneccesary vocal embellishments. Thank you. You are so, SO refreshing... and you've got personality. Holy wow... thank you.

Some people on the idol board are kind of wondering when & where we can get a cd...I hope we don't get you in trouble for talking about all of that over there. We're just very happy for you :-D

hey.....i post under the pseudonym "unknownhinson" on the AI boards. glad you dig the haiku, er, the sligh-ku. i got into haiku when i used to post on the gil thorp message boards "the bucket". i thought it was an odd way of expressing one's self and it seems to express the unusual way you seem to have approached the AI thing. take care, good luck...i'll be pulling for you. just remember...there was a man named Cleavant Derricks who wrote a simple song many years ago that sums up so much for us...."Just a little talk with Jesus". Rock on!

Anonymous said...

Hey man. had to do a few searches after seeing you on idol and thinking "this guy is awesome". Loved the dry humour and voice aint half bad either :o)

Hoping you get far in the competition and get your dues from the hoff.

Anonymous said...

Just out of curiosity...did you ever read Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew"? Your's is the name of one of the characters.

Anonymous said...

Hi Chris - Good luck in Hollywood! I've watched every audition (well, you know, the TV ones) and yours was the memorable one, the only name I remembered. That says something, as far as I'm concerned. Stuff the clones, let's have someone with a personality and a sense of humour! Watching from England and cheering you on - Kristin M.

Anonymous said...

Hey there. Was watching American Idol, and thought you where pretty good so googled your name. When the ran the pre-audition tape, I said to myself this guy is hilarious, but I bet he is just here for a joke, then when you began to sing I was shocked.

You have a great voice and one that I think suits the competition and that the viewers will like you, and wish you all the best for the further audtions.

And if the singing doesn't work out stand up comedy is always a option.

Cheers, Adam

Ha! Dr. Bob was here! Cool!

I wish I were as talented as all those Sligh-Ku artists.

You are going to the Top 12. If you keep your humble, yet disarmingly funny attitude: You will win.

You need a hugely popular weblog like graycharles.com for your Fro Patro to gather and play. Anybody wanna volunteer? Anybody? Bueller?

Hey, Chris. Don't worry re the weight right now. Focus on your talent, your charisma, your musicianship. That's what we're all seeing; that's what we care about. After you win, then start the diet. Don't overstress yourself or your body now. (Which isn't to say, don't try to eat more healthily. Just don't worry if you 'slip up'.)

Chris,

After seeing you on AI, a friend of mine asked if I knew you from college. Evidently, we were in the same society for awhile. Anyway, after doing some reseach about you on the web, I'm thrilled to see the potential that is in store for you!

I encourage you to give this all you have in an effort to engage our culture with truth. We need more and more individuals like yourself to publically glorify God with their talents.

Wow, if anyone hasn't read Chris's bio further down in the blog, go do it now. It's a great testament to how being raised under severe repression can lead one to find their best creativity.

Btw, why would he want to have anything to do with Bob Jones University? They kicked him out with 7 credits to go for going to a concert...wait for it...a Christian concert! What a bunch of nutjobs.

Best of luck to you Chris. Get your album up on CDBaby and you've got a sale.

Hello Chris,

So glad you made it through! You were a standout from the get go -- both my boyfriend and I loved you right away. Your sense of humour is wonderful and refreshing, your look is unforgettable, and your voice is fabulous. I don't know what Simon was saying tonight about you not being one of the best singers, because we here in Canada think you are a GREAT singer. We checked out some of your band's songs -- how you dudes aren't signed yet I will never know. I worked in the industry myself and that just seems wrong! Your stuff was nicely produced, by the way -- radio ready. I must say that I like Chris Daughtry last season, but when I listened to his band's stuff and his original songs, I was thinking, "boy, he's going to need some help in the writing/producing department to really make it commercially". No such thought with you, kid. You've got all the chops -- a record company's dream. I almost hope you don't win idol, simply because I think you will have more freedom to do what you want if you don't. You will DEFINITELY get signed off this -- no doubt whatsoever. I look forward to watching you this season, and if you really want to win and feel that would be the best for your career, I hope you go all the way!

Very best,

Susan K in BC

When first seeing Chris on AI, talking about his first audition, I thought "Oh this guy's cool and he laughs at himself. Gotta love that!" Then we discovered you could SING!! I nearly fell out of my chair!!!

Imagine my reaction when I discover you're also a fellow Christian AND MARRIED!! That is TOO AWESOME!!!

I was starting to think I wouldn't bother watching AI this season cuz I couldn't find anyone to root for. Had to find just the right person, the one that gave me tingles when they sing - that's my cue that they're gonna go far. Usually those 'tingles' mean they'll end up in the top two. Chris is the only one I got that 'feelin' about.

We had SO much fun doing sligh-ku's when you were on the show. We also made a story line. One poster started the story and each poster would add to it - it got pretty out of control and funny at times. I don't know if you got the chance to read it, but it was, at some points, pretty hilarious. That's what we did, that's how we showed our support....we figured you wanted your fans to have a sense of humor and have fun while we supported you. So while the other fans were fighting over who was better and who should go home your fans were having fun together!
