My 100 Favorite Songs of All Time

EDIT: Hey guys, a lot of people are ragging on me because the songs I've picked...some of them are pretty crappy. However, I should've noted beforehand that these are songs that I love from my whole musical journey. The music that I listen to now on a regular basis is vastly different from what I did 10 years ago. However, many of those songs from years ago still have a place in my heart b/c they brought me to where I am now. If the same songs came out now I probably wouldn't even hear them since I rarely listen to the radio anymore. So, hopefully that explains choices like Celine Dion, BoyzIIMen & Michael Bolton.

Have you heard of Jeff Buckley? Because quite a few people on the list (including Muse, Ray LaMontagne) were influenced by him and some of the legends you mentioned (Led Zeppelin, Queen) had an influence on him.

I'll stop pimping Jeff Buckley now. :)

A curious girl said...

but i will add to the list of people influenced by jeff buckley:

ben folds
john mayer

okay i'll shut up now. :) iv'e heard so much about muse but hvaen't heard anything from them. must check them out.

Wise choices. I'm afraid you forgot a few songs:

1. Dream On, Aerosmith
2. The Shadow Proves the Sunshine, Switchfoot
3. New Born, Muse
4. EVERY song by Sigur Ros
5. Sweet Child O' Mine, GNR
6. Jolene, Ray LaMontagne
6. The Weight, The Band

I'm just going to assume this was an honest mistake.

Will said...

Some verrry interesting choices here, Chris.

I'm wondering where the top 3 songs will be a couple years from now. Interested to see Muse and MuteMath so high on the all-time list, even though I find them really interesting. Couldn't tell you what I would put up there, though your list has inspired me to start putting together my own.

Thanks!!

ok...I'm really glad that "Don't Stop Believin'" is on here...but I must say I'm not too happy that you credited Mariah Carey w/ Open Arms when that was definitely a Journey song first...just sayin

ChrisSligh said...

If you look to the top of the post, you'll notice I put that these were my favorite recordings of songs...not necessarily the original artists. Mariah Carey's version of "Open Arms" is remarkable.

As far as other songs that could've been on the list...well, I'm sure there are favorite songs I missed, but again these are MY favorite songs. You can agree or disagree with them being your favorite, but their mine.

And I love these freaking songs.

I can't believe I'm the first fan to infiltrate your blog! You're creating a nice little stir already. Love the music on your myspace page and can't wait to see you audition next week. I'm already starting my finger yoga classes in preparation for mega Chris dialing sessions. You go boy!

I love so many of these songs and I loved your American Idol audition! (was linked here via an Idol message board, hope you don't mind) You're a good singer and clearly a cool person, I hope you make it far on Idol! I love the Beatles and all the other classic rock songs you mentioned in this post - Blackbird in particular is such a beautiful song. Go Chris!

I'd like to say I enjoyed your performance on TV tonight. I'm also a singer but more of a broadway type of guy. However, you decided to sing my favorite song from Seal...

When I heard that was what you were going to sing, I honestly sat there for a second and said,"Oh god, here we go again." But...

Damn! If you don't make it through to the end, I'm gonna be pissed. You have the potential to be the next American Idol bro.

Good job tonight on American Idol. You've a great voice. Perhaps at the end you'll move to tears not only Hasselhoff, but Hicks as well.

jennifer l. said...

On the list, I'm glad to see Madman Across the Water represented with "Tiny Dancer", although I would personally select the title track, "Razor Face", or "Levon" over "Tiny Dancer". I declare, that's one of the finest albums of all time.

I agree with the previous comments - a top 100 list must feature "Lover, You Should've Come Over" at least as a runner up.

These songs are mostly radio hits... oft-times, I'm looking through this list and thinking "great album, but this not-so-popular song was better."

"Sitting, Waiting, Wishing" is AWESOME on "A Weekend At The Greek". Check that out if nothing else.

My husband and I both really liked your American Idol audition. We're plugging you on our American Idol blog as a favorite. Of course, I hope the fact that you're sitting around playing video games in mid-January isn't a bad sign for what Hollywood holds.

All I can say is give me an application to be a charter member of the "Fro Patro." How can anyone not dig a white boy with a fro who grew up listening to Johnny Horton? Awesome stuff dude, you actually made me like the song "Kiss from a Rose" and I didn't think that was possible.

Just want to say, you were fantastic on AI tonight. You sang a challenging song beautifully (it also happens to be my favorite by Seal), and you were very funny and seem not to take yourself too seriously. Kudos to you! Hope to see lots more of you on the show. Best of luck!

My husband and I loved you on AI (you are hilarious!). I'm so glad I discovered this blog because I've enjoyed every word of it-- especially the story of your musical journey.

Best wishes on AI from a local Greenville couple. We'll be praying for you!

Not only did my husband and I love you on AI, I now doubly love you because of your love for Ben Folds (my daughter's name is Kate because of his music) and your love of his Dr. Dre cover. That has to be the FUNNIEST cover ever, and yet still incredibly musical. And now that you've reminded me of it, it will be in my head all day long. Now that's some real conversation for your a^&.

Best of Luck on Idol.

Looks like you're already creating quite a stir, Chris! Way to go!

Great list, but as ravleen said earlier, you should *definitely* check out Jeff Buckley. I also highly recommend the late Nick Drake, and the very much alive John Legend.

I guarantee that at least one of the above, if not all three, will change your life. Also, all three have great songs that fall within your range.

Alright, Well Im going to be quick.

Firstly, I dont think I could ever make a list like this. O___O;; I love too much music.

Now you may be wondering how I found you, and my answer is this; I Googled your name, hoping to find a copy of your Audition to send to one of my friends (it was a one of the, if not THE best performance in the episode.) I thought you were brilliant. SEAL- Kiss from a Rose is a wonderful song, and you are a really awesome guy. XD

I scrolled down, just to make sure (or perhaps half hoping) I wasnt the only one that Googled you. XD

Anyways, Im going to be off!

Thanks for the tip to Ray LaMontagne and Jolene. It's a great song! I wasn't familiar with Ray LaMontagne. I think I'll listen to a lot more of his songs. Juxtpose his Jolene with Dolly Parton's Jolene, especially when sung by Jack White (White Stripes).

If you like them, you might enjoy Arcade Fire. As a Folds fan who is religious, I am surprised you omitted Not the Same, amazing song, would be a great one to perform on Idol (could even get the crowd involved). Finally, with your musical taste and sense of humor, check out the Magnetic Fields. Start with 69 Love Songs.

well, at least the Beatles got two spots ;D otherwise, be careful when it comes to song choices on Idol man... a lot of these are predictable ballads that not many will jump out of their chairs for no matter how good you sing. Aim for your audience :) Show you can be a star in this day and age. Dion and Bolten choices will alienate everyone under 35.

P.S. you're hilarious.

I was surprised to see Eminem on your list.

I'm not familiar with many of the singers/artists because their songs are not played on the radio over here. Nor you can buy their CD's in record bars.

Kiss From A Rose is one of the best songs I've ever heard. Great melody and lyrics for a song included in a Batman soundtrack. Pretty hard song to sing but your rendition during the audition was great.

I wonder if you like CCR and John Fogerty.

Have a great day.

Peace,

Other than the complete lack of Jeff Buckley (and a few additions), you have impeccable taste.

I especially love the fact that Blackbird was so high on the list. It's one of my favorite songs of all time. I have the White Album on vinyl and I tell you what, there is nothing like listening to an old scratched up record with the recorded birds singing and my favorite band of all time singing this beautiful melody. I love it.

Ben Folds is probably my favorite artist right now. Evaporated tears my heart in pieces every time I hear it.

Buckley is an unbelievable artist in every sense of the word and you should definitely check him out if you don't know him already. Shame on you if you don't know him.:)

I listen to an awful lot of classical music, musical theatere, and opera. There is some great music to be had in those genres as well.

I have enormous respect for artists who write, play, and perform their own music. I do a little song writing myself, though I'm a better lyricist than a composer.

Loved the list and best of luck to you.:)
