Updates!

So it is about 99.9% sure that my next label home will be a major label.   Not just any major label...one in particular, but until the deal is finalized I'd feel more comfortable waiting to tell you guys specifics.  However, I want to let you guys know what's going on...

The morning that I was granted my wish to be released from my deal with Brash, about 10 minutes after the release phone call, I was on the phone with the President of a major label talking about signing there.  The next morning we (Mitch & I) had a meeting with him, the VP of A&R and the VP of Marketing and we just talked about the direction of the record and we gave them the songs.

That was Friday a week ago.  This last week, everyone had time to live with the music and I got to talk with the President of the company on Friday afternoon this week and all cylinders are firing on getting this deal up and running and having new music recorded and into your hands as fast as possible.

Obviously, deals are negotiations and negotiations can go wrong from time to time, but I am pretty sure that everyone involved (I know it's the case on my end of things) really wants this to work out and work out quickly!  We're really hoping to have a single out by the time the Back To School Tour II happens.

Speaking of...

Back to School is going out August 27 to November 1 with Aaron Shust and I co-headlining and Rough Draft and a soon-to-be-announced guest opening.  It's only May and we already have close to 30 shows on the books for the tour!!!  We are working to have over 40 and as many as 60!  I'm so pumped about this tour it's not even funny!

So anyway...all is good on Sligh front!  Just wanna make sure you guys are updated through the highs and lows!

I really wish you could play somewhere close to me and I know I say it all of the time, but it would be exciting. I don't have the money to travel a lot and those who see you often are so lucky -- I'm sure they know it.

I'm still trying to see if the picnic is possible. I didn't get the job I needed to afford the picnic. The only way I'd be able to go is if my sister decides to drive down to Ft. Campbell in Kentucky where her boyfriend is. Nashville is about 2 hours away I think so.. I think you get the picture.

If I can't make it, I think someone should do a live web broadcast on a site like stickam.com or something so I (and others) can be there without actually being there haha.

This is really exciting news! I know your other regular readers feel as I do that you keep it real on here, and feel privileged that you allow us to come along for the ride. Looking forward to seeing your list of stops on the fall tour!

Per picnic: Folks, I'm trying to get our room rate extended for an extra week, but our contact is out of the office until Wed., SO as of now, are good hotel rate at Residence Inn is over on June 2. Even if you're just thinking you MIGHT come, I urge you to make your hotel reservation...you can always cancel later if you need to.

Can't wait to hear the continuing details on your new label! And I'm really excited about the cd - it's seems like just yesterday RBTY was released. The year has flown by.

Hoping for a pass through Indy on your Back to School Tour! I don't know if the Indy State Fair (like last year) will be conducive to your new plan for the tour - with the pre-show and certain number of guests and all - so don't know if that will be reprised. But hopefully you'll be somewhere nearby!

Read your twitter message and went and listened to the songs on your production myspace page. Whew..so many applications to check out everyday now...

All's I can say is WOW. If this is your new album, I am starting to save up for the Doves next year. It is awesome. "I Can't Believe" is a really beautiful and touching song. It really touched my heart. It has that "Faith Begins" feel to it and is BEAUTIFUL. So did "I Am".

I'd say you have a hit on your hands. Now hurry and get it out to the masses. They are going to love it....Thank you so much for sharing with us...

I was listening to your demos on Chris Sligh productions. My favorite is "I am", which I heard a few months ago, and is still my favorite that I've heard from the new album. Besides that, I'm honestly not too impressed with the rest of the first five songs, or as you mentioned on twitter, the singles. I'm hoping to hear "To the world" and "I'm ready" soon, I bet those will be much better. I love the hard-rock sound of "Cmon Cmon, it's a great song for the album section. I'm not going to judge the album based on what I've heard so far because these are just demos, but I have extremely high expectations for this album with your declaration to make "the best album ever. I hope you meet them.

DJ in AL said...

Wow Chris, I'd day Nicholas has issued you a challenge! I hope you're up to it:)

I Take back that comment i just think we should hear some rock Chris Sligh

Victoria Sandberg said...

I listened to the songs and I guess I'm not that big of a fan of that mainstream Christian music sound, but that's just me -- I know that is the market you are going for, so for that I'm thinking they are good.

BUT, I REALLY liked Catching Up. Really nice. Unexpected.

One thing though, can I respectfully say that when you sing in falsetto, it's not my favorite?

risalea said...

Comments coming on music, had to work today (isn't it awful when work gets in the way of, well, LIFE! LOL), but exciting news!

Residence Inn has extended our special rate on our block of rooms for one more week! So that gives you out there on the fence, a chance to make your plans to come on out for the picnic. The reduced hotel rate is good through June 9th. A limited number of rooms is available for this rate. If all blocked rooms are reserved before the deadline and you miss out, then please email me at mkismybiz@aol.com, or fropatropicnic@yahoo.com and I'll talk to Charisse and see if we can increase the number of rooms at that rate as well. Thanks, friends!

They are sweet as pie and love their music.

No Boundaries....uhmmmmm, not so much. God love Kris Allen, the only downside to winning American Idol is having to sing that song. BTW, he's gonna' be at WDW on Friday for you Florida folks.

ChrisSligh said...

Nicholas, doling out the challenge...lol

Nicholas (and all), the way that this record is going to be put together is the 1st half of the record is going to be more commercial stuff (7 songs)...To the World and I'm Ready are the other 2 right now, though we may add 1 more. If you're not a fan of CCM radio, you will not enjoy the first 7 songs on the record. It will be unabashed chasing of commercial appeal. Songs, production, etc., is pointed to working at Christian radio, period. Sonically, the songs will sound like radio and every effort will be made to "sell out" - on purpose.

The 2nd half of the record (probably more than half, time-wise) will be 8-9 songs that make a full record in and of itself. These songs are not necessarily that artsy, but compared to most of CCM and Christian radio, it will (hopefully) feel better. Sonically, it will be sound like a mainstream record along the lines of Killers, U2, Coldplay, etc...stuff that I listen to for enjoyment.

Honestly, with signing to a major label, the commercial section of the record moved from 4 songs to 7 or 8...the "record" part has moved from 11 songs to 8 or 9. So, honestly, I feel that the art will have to suffer a bit... The gap between commercial CCM and great music is unfortunately large at this point. But I think that over time that (hopefully) that can change. But that change hasn't happened yet.

I hope that this record can be a great record. I think it will be. I think it's a cool concept, breaking up the commercial from the artsier stuff...but I guess we'll have to see how people respond.

My question I guess to you, Nicholas, is this: did you enjoy the singles from the first record? (I.e., Empty Me, Vessel & Arise) as much as you enjoyed the rest of the record?

That could help me figure out where I am at...

Thanks for the comments...

Chris

ChrisSligh said...

Oh, and as far as "no Boundaries"...um...

That may be the worst winners song yet. That and "Do I Make You Proud" make stomachs churn everywhere...I wouldn't unleash my version of that song on anyone.

LOL

Chris

risalea said...

OK, so slight protest here, Chris....I'm getting the feeling that because a song is geared to radio, it is deemed somewhat less worthy. While that might be the case in some instances, let's not over generalize. "Empty Me" spoke to so many hearts. "Vessel" is a simple song with a powerful message, and "I'm Ready" brings me to tears whenever I hear it because it always reminds me of Amanda.

The "artsy" pieces allow you to do things that you want to do without the constraints of what will "play", but don't discount the beauty of some of those radio friendly songs.

I'm going to listen right now to the whole bunch. Dang, this has been a day!

Oh, and there's a new twitter acct. for you guys to follow: ChrisSlighFans. It was created by Billy Bob Blogger to help folks know about upcoming CS events/shows, etc.

ChrisSligh said...

I don't know that anyone would say that "singles" or commercial songs are any less important than "artsier" stuff. But there is something more formulaic about those songs...simply because for some reason radio listeners like what radio listeners like. It doesn't mean they're stupid or wrong...it just means that they like what they like. It just - a lot of times - isn't what I personally like. Part of building a career though, especially in a small market like CCM, is being able to be both commercially viable and be an artist. The first album was that to some extent. But there was a struggle throughout the process to fit my "regular" songs (songs like "Let You Know" "Loaded Gun", etc.) around my wanna-be singles (I think we had 7 on the last record)...

This album, doing it this way really frees me up to do what I think is the best "single" writing that I've done as well as the best overall songwriting I've done for the artsy stuff...I personally feel like that this stuff just from a song-standpoint is the best I've ever done... But I am biased... I'm trying to stretch myself...maybe I missed it. We'll see, I guess....

I can't wait to get in the studio to work on it, though!

Thanks for reminding me that I'm Ready will have a place on the album. I remember now that you said that before and I was all excited. I just get forgetful/worried because that's always been a favorite and I know with the last record you had a lot of songs to sift through and some had to be set aside. I need to stop my worrying about I'm Ready! :)

I've always loved your idea for the singles / the album since you first mentioned it. I can see that it can be very freeing for you. This is always the best part of your blogging - getting to follow you behind the scenes as you go through the process. Can't wait til next February-ish! :)

EmilyBoo said...

I'm in the process of listening to all the singles and album songs right now... will post later with favorites, I have to listen a few times probably. :)

I'm with Risa about not discounting the beauty of the radio friendly songs. For me personally, I am drawn to some of your singles AND some of your more artsy songs. For example, Vessel and Loaded Gun, two very different songs are some of my favorites from RBTY. I admit I love the strings on both, but aside from that, I love the songs for very different reasons. Sometimes I need something worshipful, and sometimes I need to rock out!

EmilyBoo said...

Out of curiosity, how and by whom is the decision made as to which songs are single potential and which are album only? There are a few of the album ones I would enjoy hearing on the radio!

Also, Love is the Answer will not play all the way through for me. Anyone else have this problem?

EmilyBoo said...

Sorry for posting so many times, but I have to say, even on first listen, the I LOVE Beginning/End, and I think the final version will be an all time favorite!

BTW, with the change in labels, is there any news on the requiem? Are those plans on hold for now?

Also, I just had the same problem with Making Up Time that I had with Love is the Answer. It just ended really abruptly.

HstryQT said...

Emily it may be the pop up ad but maybe your pop up blocker is not showing the ad -- but the song is still stopping. It won't let you listen to more than a few songs in a row without an ad popping up. That may be it, rather than it being an issue on Chris' end.

EmilyBoo said...

Hmm. I've played Love is the Answer, Making Up Time, and Downhill each twice (3x for MUT,) and each time, they stopped around halfway through, with no pop up. I have gotten some pop ups between songs, but not during. I don't know if that is what's happening or not. Oh well, I at least got an idea of the songs.

Cathy Storms said...

Why do you thing radio wouldn't play "Catching Up"?

Anonymous said...

Chris,
Your posted doubts about "Catching Up" made me go back and listen to it again and I stand by my original post...I think it is definitely radio worthy. To me it is like a blend of The Eagles "Tequila Sunrise" and I don't know maybe, The Plain White T's current hit. And, I don't mean to post anonymously, I just couldn't figure out how to give my name when leaving a comment. I am, by the way, Liz.

Finally got a chance to hear all the demos. #1 in my book: Catching Up. BEAUTIFUL!! Your voice is pure gold and lyrics unique and touching. CCM Radio-worthy? It's too good for that but would be great to see it hit there.
2nd favorite: Chasing Down A Name. Then C'mon, C'mon.

I'm really excited for this album to be birthed. VERY nice work. And I echo Emily in her query - what are your plans for Requiem?

Nicholas said...

Hi Chris! I'm sorry I didn't respond sooner, I've been very busy and I honestly didn't expect a direct response from you. Yes, I definately did like the singles from RBTY as much as the rest of that album. As you said in an interview, it still boggles my mind why exactly "Arise" didn't take off on radio.

It is true that I'm not a fan of CCM radio, but I certainly don't mind the music they play, and sometimes I can use a healthy dose of inspirational songs. I agree with you about "catching up", it's a cool song, but not one for radio.

When you originally started talking about "commercial" stuff I thought you were talking about songs that would be able to break into mainstream pop radio. But now I know that's not what you mean by commercial.

Thanks for taking the time to respond! I'm sure this album will be awesome, I only meant to re-emphasize the challenge you set for yourself. I can't wait to hear the final product!

risalea said...

"Catching Up".....wow. I don't pretend to be an expert on what will fly on radio, but I do know as I just listened to that, I got the feeling that I got the first time I heard the "Empty Me" and "Here Comes Goodbye" demos--that I had just heard an extremely special song. Other faves first listen through are "I Can't Believe" and "I Am" (which I heard earlier and loved).

Chris, I tried to respond to your twitter post today 6-1-09, but the whole "can't message someone that's not following you" thing came into play. The gist of it was that I very much agree with you.

I came here and started reading and I'm curious as to why you think CCM lags in some way? I listen to Air1 almost always in the truck, but I also listen to LOTS of U2 and Daughtry at my desk and on my Zune. There are truly some great bands in CCM.

Love your stuff by the way!

chamilton said...

okay guys,
Since I live in Wichita, I feel like I have to commit on the recent killing of Dr. Tiller.I am doing this because of the Twitter that was sent by Chris today. It really doesn't matter what side of the fence you are on on this matter. I am not trying to get a debae started here this is not the place. I feel like and I believe that it is the feeling of the city that while some people did not agree with the paractice of Dr. Tiller, all of the people that I have talked to and have seen oon the news for both sides of the issue are completely shocked and horrified that this has happened in our city. The thought of a person going to his house of worship and being killed there while he was ushering people into services with his wife singing in the choir is disgusting. The Tiller family have lost a father, a husband, a grandfather and today my thoughts are with. Take care all.

CAndy

Anonymous said...

I do not want a debate because this is between me and what I feel but I will comment. I went to Wichita once or twice a year for about five years and spent time in peaceful prayer outside Tiller's "clinic". I went for one reason only...partial birth abortions even up to almost a due date. He was the only one in my area that was that extreme. I am not pro life ...I am just against this. That being said what happened to him was a punk move and makes people who feel like me look like idiots. That doesn't help. It is what it is. It is indefensible and insane for this to happen to anyone. Every time something like this happens it turns my many frozen days on my kneecaps into nothing. I do not rejoice, I do not mourn.
I just feel numb and frustrated.

ChrisSligh said...

First off...the actions of Dr. Tiller were despicable and horrible. Partial birth abortion is, I think, even in most pro-choice people's minds, a little tough to accept.

However, Randy, the problem that I have with what happened is the same is yours...it simply makes believers look stupid. In my opinion, it causes the world to look at Christians as extreme and it ultimately hurts the cause of pro life.

But enough on that....

I need to say thank you to Carmen.

As you may know from Twitter, I missed my flight on Saturday. I was supposed to fly from Denver to Nashville on Frontier (ended up being United) then had 1:30 to get my luggage head up and check into Southwest to head to Jacksonville, where I had church services Sunday morning, and a concert Sunday night.

Obviously, I missed my flight. So I had to buy a ticket on Delta from Denver to Atlanta. Sarah drove down to Atlanta and brought me merch. And to save me from having to spend $250 on a 1-way rental to Jacksonville, Carmen & Chris drove up to Atlanta and drove me down.

I got to my hotel at 3:20am...they got home after 4...so their sacrifice is incredibly appreciated!

So, thanks guys!

Love me some Metcalfes!

OK, this is a sad two days. This morning in LR, at an Army-Navy recruiting center less than ten minutes from my mother's home, a man shot into the center, killing one soldier and seriously injuring another. The victims were just out of basic training and were from the area (one from Conway, one from Jacksonville), participating in a hometown recruiting effort.

The police believe the shooter was deliberately targeting the military. And for what...a mama is crying herself to sleep tonight, and another is praying over her son's hospital bed.

This is scary on two fronts...that someone can decide it is their right to take you out because they have a beef with the government. And because it happened in broad daylight in a nice part of town where you wouldn't dream of something like this happening. On a personal note for my family in particular....my mom, sister and niece happened to be going down Rodney Parham on a shopping trip at the moment it happened and they heard the shots, thought it might be a car backfiring but were unsure, and then heard what had actually happened about an hour later. That they were so close to this horrible event had my 82 year old mother quite upset.

We went to the cemetery to put flowers on my daddy's grave this afternoon, and I thought alot about his sacrifice for the country (WWII Navy vet)and how when he served, it was unthinkable that a soldier would be in as much danger at home as on the battlefield.

So hard to understand why such things as this and the shooting of the doctor happen in what is supposed to be civilized society.

Prayers for all the victims and their families.

On a much lighter note, today was the first day of my summer break. Yay! I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have a job with a summer off. What with teaching for so many years, I guess I've had that mindset since first grade in 19_ _
....never mind! More time for Chris Sligh concerts, picnics, and such! ; )

I am also not surprised by Carmen and Chris's actions. They are both great people and that's why we love them so much.

Risa,
I saw the Ark shooting headline on my homepage and immediately thought of you and your people. Your sad report was very touching.

Carmen,
LUCKY! You get a concert AND get to rescue Chris. Though I don't wish him ANY more travel mishaps, I'd love the chance to sing w/him to the stereo on the highway someday! :o) Kudos to you and Chris for taking care of him.

Chris,
I wasn't gonna post anything about this here today but since you did...
Your tweet this morning "Sad day for Christendom..." were the first words I opened my eyes to. I've been contemplating all day. When you strip it all away I think the facts come down to this: A "Christian?" guns down a "Doctor?" in the "church?" where he regularly worships. The "doctor?" legally terminates infants because "parents?" pay him to. In my opinion, it is a sad day for mankind.

Chris,
I've been listening to your "productions" songs and was just wondering if you specifically tried to write a song for Compassion International to use or for you to use in your concerts when you talk about the organization. Because it's PERFECT for both purposes.

Catching Up is the type of music I love the MOST. Acoustic guitar, pure simple lead vocals, sweet BGV's (even if you didn't use Risa for them!). Easily the best song I've EVER heard from you.

And "I'm Ready". Very worshipful, inspiring. A tears streaming down the face masterpiece. I can't quit listening to these songs. I am ever grateful for your talent. God bless all those who advanced you to the limelight and may He forever help you endure it. :o)

Whoops, meant to mention the song title I was referring to in paragraph one. Compassion (Change The World).
