I'm back

So, I've been conspicuously away from the blog for 12 days.

Hey, no biggie...I'm back.

The Stripped Tour went well.  I'm hoping to make this a yearly thing.  It was a lot of fun - Jon Skaggs, Jason Walker and I bonded and became closer and truly had a great time.

All the shows were cool and I think the story-telling/stripped down arrangements work really well.  I still am in love with the rock show we normally do, but once a year I think it will be cool to do a stripped down thing.

This weekend, I do the gig in memory of Kelsey in Virginia.  She was the girl that passed away in a car accident on the way to our gig in Fredricksburg, VA a while back.  Obviously a sad situation.

I sent the family an mp3 of my song "Faith Begins" and told them the story of how that song came to be: I was in a band called the Chris Sligh band back in 2001-2003.  Joseph Bunn was my keyboard player for the whole time.  The band broke up when all of the guys went to college and at that point I started Half Past Forever with 2 new guys and 2 guys from CSB.  Like 3 months later, Joseph was on his way back up to school at North Greenville (where I finished up) and apparently fell asleep at the wheel.  His car went off the road, he was thrown from the vehicle and was killed.  It was the first person close to me that I dealt with the death of, and I just could not understand why this was happening.  For the first time, I was struggling with questions with God and as I worked through all that stuff, I wrote "Faith Begins" (which is on myspace.com/chrisslighproductions).  The family has asked that I sing the song this weekend, so the band is working it up.

Anyway, life is good.

Chris-
I read a news article about the concert you put on for Kelsey and I thought it was amazing. After reading this blog I am even more amazed- that song is beautiful. Thanks for the update! <3

I remember driving up on that wreck when Joseph died...we were coming back to N Greenville from a South Carolina football game. What a sad time at North Greenville. I remember when they played that audio clip of his testamony from when he was baptized...powerful...

YOU KNOW CHRIS,
SO MUCH COULD BE SAID ON THIS... BUT I KNOW ONE THING... THAT GOD PUTS US IN PLACES... JUST AT THE RIGHT TIME...LEARNING TO TRUST IN HIS TIMING AND NOT IN OURS IS A BIG LESSON.I REMEMBERED KELSEY FROM THE BLOG AWHILE AGO. IT IS VERY HUMBLING TO SAY THE LEAST THAT THEY REQUEST YOUR PRESENCE TO PERFORM FOR THEM.
GOD BLESS AND DO IT WELL AS WE KNOW YOU WILL.
PEACE & LOVE.........

My friends from back home in VA have been asking me about this show (since Im obviously the Chris Sligh expert). I know it will mean so much to that community to have you come back for this; and sharing your heart like you have and will do will help heal them immensely, Im sure. It is always such a tragedy when someone so young passes away, especially so suddenly in a car accident. Be safe this weekend.

Danny Teddy and I will actually be driving back to VA the same day you'll be there. Its our first time back home since Teddy was born and our first 10 hour car trip with him. An adventure for sure.

We'll be thinking of you & kelsey's friends and family Saturday night,

Lori

Chris, we missed you!

I love the idea of this concert, it's a lovely thing to do. Instead of melting their faces off I'm guessing you will melt their hearts.

Safe trip to you and the band!

Sending you love and support from DJ in AL!

Welcome back!! I'm so happy the tour went well.
What a wonderful thing your doing playing for a memorial for Kelsy. It's going to be a very sad thing.
Faith Begins as you know is one of my favorite songs and has so many meanings to me. There won't be a dry eye in the house.
I'm glad your back safe and sound.

So good to hear from you again Chris. You have such a big heart and so much compassion for your fans - for all people. You are a great role model!

Hischild said...

Chris,
SO glad to hear of your successful stripped tour and to know you will do it again. Maybe I'll get a chance to go to the next time around.

Wonderful of you to do the benefit for Kelsy. Her family must be so grateful. Faith Begins is a VERY touching song that I love and yes, there won't be a dry eye in the house, I'm sure. Thanks for sharing the story of your friend Joseph. Took me back to the death of Rich Mullins (one of my all time favorite persons) which happened much the same way.
Everyone spread your love to others while you can. Life is fleeting.

risalea said...

So glad to hear that your tour went well. You truly have awesome band members that are not only wonderful musicians, but wonderful gentlemen as well.

"Faith Begins" will bring comfort to Kelsey's family and obviously already has for them to request it. I hope you will include "I'm Ready", another song that speaks of faith and hope for eternity.

My heart aches for Kelsey's family and friends as they continue to deal with her loss, and rejoices that God has used your music to give them peace.

risalea said...

Along the line of bringing comfort to those left behind, I got a message today from Mandy Meames from the Richness board. They are doing something very special for Amanda's mom, Tammy, for Christmas. It costs nothing, just a couple minutes of your time. If you'd like to participate, please shoot me an email at mkismybiz@aol.com and I'll give you the details.

I saw your show in Rockford IL after the Ice Hogs game with my nieces and youngest son. We had the best time reminiscing about the show on the way home. We all want to say Thanks for the Memories!! We also want to say THANK YOU for driving all the way to see us!!! You've gained 4 new fans and many more!!! Take care, from the kids in the front row, at their 1st concert!

I would have loved to see the stripped concert. I really prefer a simpler arrangement to stuff. I bet you were terrific, Chris.

Thanks for taking the time to check in, and share about the show for Kelsey.(hugs)

Hey Chris-
I heard you sing "Empty Me" live on K-love with John and Sherry. I would love to download the live version of that song. Is it out there for purchase anywhere? I liked it better than the recorded version. Please don't take that negative...it just impacted me differently. It is such a BEAUTIFUL song!!

risalea said...

Hey, anon. If you like that version, you'd probably enjoy this youtube acoustic performance of "Empty Me".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmU67sQOkCw

The song lyrics are so pure as is Chris's voice, and the melody so, well, melodic! it lends itself well to acoustic, I think.

Greetings from somewhere between Humphrey and England (and I don't mean the one across the pond-on second thought I have passed a few duck ponds! LOL). Happy birthday, Rosalee! Love Famous Dave's-you and Harry have a big time! Uh, Chris, I think our verse writing is rubbing off on you. This is not necessarily a good thing. : ). Heehee. Your kudos to Rosalee are on target--girl, it wouldn't be half as fun without you!! And DJ, I am not texting while driving-I waited until I got to the only restaurant in these parts--Sonic! Later gators.

I am glad you are going to take Chris out to Famous Dave's. I took Chris out last weekend and actually had a waitress ask if she could take his picture. Now that was a first. She was so impressed with him. She spent about 15 minutes talking about him. The kicker was she wasn't even the waitress waiting our table. LOL

Anyway, have fun and enjoy your special day.

Thanks, guys for all of your birthday wishes.

Right now I'm eating some very decadent Godiva dark chocolate covered almonds - courtesy of Harry (I also got 2 pair of earrings - lest anyone think he's cheap (lol)).

We just got back from Famous Dave's. Unfortunately, we were given a small booth, so there was no room to prop up "Chris", the way I usually do. We split my free dessert (vanilla ice cream with whipped cream) and ended up bringing home about half of our "Feast for Two". I counted at least three other people who also had a birthday there tonight.

Anyway, thanks, again.

Now I remember. I *did* notice that. Just didn't stick in my memory. I thought it was just a great local BBQ caterer.
I should start petitioning the company to open in my neck of the woods - er...desert.

BTW, sounds like you were near Stuttgart the other day? The town of all my childhood summer vacations. I don't recall a Humphrey near there though. Maybe its sprung up in the 30 years since I've been gone. :o)

Rosalee-You're notold--obviously your great niece has VERY young parents and grandparents! ; )
And I thought it might be interesting in light of these falling gas priced (at least until inauguration day! LOL) to ask the question; "how much will it cost for Chris to fill up in your town when he comes for a show?". Here at the NLR Kroger's-1.48/gal, a penny cheaper than it was here right before Katrina. Amazing!

Cathy Storms said...

Gas is $2.25 here in Southern California. Although I heard it is under $2.00 in parts of San Diego.

rosalee said...

Yep. It's $2.25 on Long Island, too. A couple of weeks ago I got a fillup for home heating oil. It was $2.71 a gallon. What I don't understand is that exactly 2 years ago, when the price of crude was also around $60.00 a barrel, it was $2.31 a gallon. Hmmmm. The middlemen got an extra 17% somehow....

I would compose a ditty, but I have company coming for an early Thanksgiving and let's just say I'm running a tad behind!

Candy, you are way better than me....I am lucky to get my tree up the weekend after Thanksgiving. I kind of like waiting, though. Thanksgiving is one of my fave holidays, so want to give it its due. Seeing all the homes on the League's Holiday Home Tour last weekend has got me in the spirit, though!

Chris, since we know you are not a turkey and dressing fan, what's on your menu for Thursday? (I still say, cook your turkey in one of those Reynold's cooking bags...it is moist and will give you a whole new perspective on your bird. Or try one deep fried...I've heard they are moist and delicious, but I've never had it that way myself.)

Later, friends! Have a great day, Cathy!

A song we've sung in school at Thanksgiving.

We gather together

We gather together to ask the Lord's blessing;
he chastens and hastens his will to make known;
the wicked oppressing now cease from distressing:
sing praise to his Name, he forgets not his own.

Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
ordaining, maintaining his kingdom divine;
so from the beginning the fight we were winning:
thou, Lord, wast at our side: all glory be thine!

We all do extol thee, thou leader triumphant,
and pray that thou still our defender wilt be.
Let thy congregation escape tribulation:
thy Name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!

I am happy too see that everybody seems to of had a wonderful holiday and yes girls, I did my part to stimulate the economy as well. I don't think it would be Thanksgiving if I did not go shopping with my mom and grandma on Black Friday even though we did not do the 5 a.m. thing this year like usual but we got out there and with the exception of a little road rage on my part everybody seemed to be in good spirits. I hope for everybody safe travels where ever you are going and whatever you are doing. Carrie you are in my thoughts. The first year after losing somebody is rough. Take care everybody I have to get back to the wrapping.

Carrie, thoughts and prayers with you and yours. I've posted before about how Thanksgiving was always a special holiday with my dad and he passed away between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so this time of year is always very poignant.

DJ, started to call you during the game, but thought better of it. Tried to talk Gaylon into calling, but he was too scared. LOL Oh, well, the Hogs have had their moments all season...that's what happens in a rebuilding year.

I'm excited to get to see Chris and company in Paragould on Wed. night. I hope my friend, Cindy, goes with me...don't mind driving by myself, but hate coming back that late alone, and it's about a 2hour, 45 min. trip. Risa~Gaylon wraps for you? My hubby wraps like Gaylon does but he only does my gifts and thats okay with me. I always have the prettiest presents under the tree. He can take up to an hour wrapping one present.
I'm so excited for you that you get to go see Chris on Wednesday. Be sure and give Tammy and Lindsay and big hug and hello from me.

What a great week this has been, Monday is gonna be super hard!

Hey all,
Glad that everyone had a good Thanksgiving. I did my part to stimulate the economy. I am like you Candy, in that I went later this year. Still had fun and got most everything.

So we need a new topic. How about Gina's new song "Taking the Keys"? If you haven't listen to it yet, you can check it out at her website www.rocktheglock.com. Just go to the music section and give it a listen. Also check her blog titled new music. She gives a big thanks to Chris. She also mentions another song she will have up soon titled "When Did You Go". I love her new song! I am planning on catching her and Blake next weekend in Sarasota. I hope she does this song. It is really great! BTW-- Chris did you write any songs for Gina or did you mostly work with producing some stuff for her?? Just wondering.

Hey Carmen -

"Taking the Keys" has Sligh written all over it musically. He co-wrote that song. I think it's a decent song. Also, refer back to his Oct 16th blog entry where he talks about writing with Gina and writing "When Did You Go" with Jeff Spence. He said that Gina recorded that song, too. I can see her doing that one. I hope she comes to New York with the rest of the Idols Mania Live cast.

Rosalee, you probably saw this, but Gina mentions playing at Idols Live in Florida on Dec. 6th, and that there will be other dates after the New Year, so maybe she will be coming your way.

I hope this doesn't turn into something like the Branson, MO fiasco.

Is the Christmas EP coming out this year? It's getting late in the season.
